Birds and Expeditions
Image donation – Birds of the Netherlands (1770-1829)
With many thanks to User:Husky some 250 historic images of birds of the Netherlands were donated to Commons. The images come from the book Nederlandsche Vogelen (“Birds of the Netherlands”, 1770-1829) by Nozeman, Sepp and Houttuyn from the collection of the national library of The Netherlands.
The images can be found in commons:Category:Nederlandsche vogelen van Nozeman en Sepp
For every bird the following names have been added
- Modern scientific name of bird depicted
- Modern English name of bird depicted
- Modern Dutch name of bird depicted
- Dutch name as mentioned in book
- Latin name as mentioned in book
- Items depicted on plate

Because of the Latin names all birds are in their corresponding categories, see or instance Alauda arvensis. We hope that the English and Latin names will help uptake on non-Dutch wiki projects.
A web application to summarize Expedition Wikipedia
The Wikipedian in Residence project Expedition Wikipedia took place in 2014. Under the guidance of the Dutch Foundation for Academic Heritage, ten Dutch university museums and collections and the Tropenmuseum have contributed media to Wikimedia Commons, with a relation to the general theme of expeditions, and journeys of discovery. Wikipedian in Residence (WiR) was Sandra Fauconnier (User:Spinster).
On 28 May 2015, the project's results were officially presented during a well-visited symposium in Utrecht, around the subject of Shared Authority. Also, on that day a web application was launched which brings together some of the results of the project: http://www.expeditiewikipedia.nl (content mainly in Dutch). Source code of this application is open source (MIT license) and available on GitHub.
An image donation to Wikimedia Commons by the Tropenmuseum, in the context of this project, is scheduled for the upcoming months.
