Lee Strasberg, stage name of Israel Strassberg (born 17 November 1901 in Budaniv, then Austro-Hungarian empire - died 17 February 1982 in New York City), was a Polish-born actor, director and acting teacher from the United States. Born from a Jewish family in Poland under the Austrian empire (since 1945 area part of Ukraine), he migrated in the U.S. in 1909. Apart from acting, he trained several generations of theatre and film's most illustrious talents, including Anne Bancroft, Dustin Hoffman, Montgomery Clift, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Julie Harris, Paul Newman, Ellen Burstyn, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and director Elia Kazan.
