New messages notification (OBOD) not appearing for logged out users without a session cookie
Open, Needs TriagePublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

Note that the STR involves revealing your IP address to the world. Use a VPN if you don't want that.

  • Ascertain your IP address
  • In your main window, using your logged-in SUL account, leave a message on your IP's talk page on enwiktionary
  • In the incognito/private window, go to any Wiktionary page other than the IP talk page

What happens?:
No OBOD appears

What should have happened instead?:
The OBOD should have appeared

I performed the STR on testwiki and the OBOD appeared just as it should have.

See T350861: MW returns uncacheable responses for en.wikipedia.org when specific XFF values are sent and https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/980440.

See T350861#9327295 for some reasons against fixing. If this should be fixed, there are two proposed ways:

  • Move the OBOD logic inside an iframe (so the page itself can still be cached)
  • Use JavaScript to load unread messages (which will not show if JS is disabled).

I have no option on whether to fix it.

Good point, I hadn't used the IP to edit, so that explains the behaviour.
