Nagroda została zainicjowana przez poetkę i filantropkę Edith Anisfield Wolf jako wyraz zaangażowania swojej rodziny w kwestie sprawiedliwości społecznej. Z początku nagrodę sponsorował „The Saturday Review”, a od 1963 roku nagrodę przyznaje The Cleveland Foundation. Od lat 60. do 1996 roku jury przewodniczył Ashley Montagu, po czym funkcję tę przejął Henry Louis Gates.
