Volkner serves as the Gym Leader for the Sunyshore City Gym. Volkner specializes in Electric-type Pokémon, and holds the Beacon Badge for the trainers that defeat him. He is the final and most powerful gym leader in Sinnoh.

Appearance

Volkner is a young blue-eyed man, who has spiky blonde hair. He wears a black T-shirt over his collared blue jacket, which has yellow details and black sleeves. He also wears black pants, and gray shoes, which have volt markings on the soles. Volkner also has a chain around his left hip.

Personality

He lacks motivation, which he is trying to find by challenging strong opponents, due to his status as the strongest Sinnoh Gym Leader. Since it was a long time since he faced such opponents, Volkner's laid-back nature makes him wasteful of electricity, due to having his Gym redecorated with many appliances and machines. Upon finding a strong opponent, he becomes much more interested in Pokémon battles.

Etymology

The name Volkner comes from "volt" (the unit of electrical potential).

His Japanese name, Denji, could originate from 電 (den, electricity), 電磁 (denji, electromagnetism), and 電池 (denchi, battery).

Games

Diamond and Pearl

Volkner first appeared in Generation IV's Diamond and Pearl games as the Sunyshore City Gym Leader, specializing in Electric Pokémon. His Gym consists of three rooms filled with gigantic gears, electrical equipment, and rotating walkways. The player would need to rotate the walkways, using buttons located in various areas, and construct a path leading to the next room, and later, to Volkner himself. In the game, just like in the anime he is bored but after battling he will be back to the way he was.

Upon defeating him, Volkner will reward the player with the Beacon Badge and TM57 (Charge Beam).

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Trivia

• During his Double Battle team up with Flint, the two use Electric and Fire-type Pokémon counterparts. Volkner uses Jolteon and Electivire while Flint uses Flareon and Magmortar.
• At one point in Black and White, Shauntal references battling Volkner in the past.
• Volkner bears a very slight resemblance to Minato Namikaze from the series Naruto.
  • As well as Volkner using Electric-type Pokémon, while Minato Namikaze is known as "The Yellow Flash".
• In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, he has an Octillery, which is an unusual Pokémon for him to have, since Octillery is a Water-type Pokémon, and an Ambipom, which is a Normal-type Pokémon. However, both of them know Electric-type moves.
