Harold Smith is a character in the The Powerpuff Girls. He is the main antagonist of the episodes "Supper Villain" and "Just Desserts." He is the patriarch of the Smith Family. He is the one who brought evil into the family, as well as the mastermind behind the family's plan to destroy the Powerpuff Girls.

Harold lived a dull, monotone life, hated by his son, and with no indication of happiness. He found comfort in the newscasts about Mojo Jojo and was fascinated by Mojo's evil acts. This leads to Harold dreaming about breaking free from his miserable life by becoming a villain, creating an improvised costume and taking the Professor hostage when he and the Girls are invited to the Smiths' house for dinner.

History

In "Supper Villain", it is shown that Harold goes through every single day the same way - waking up, handling his personal hygiene, eating pancakes for breakfast with his family, going to work at a mustard factory, and returning home to see the news. On one night, Harold sees a newscast reporting a crime committed by Mojo Jojo. This inspires Harold, who longs for something exciting to do in his life. When the newscast learns him about Mojo's failure due to The Powerpuff Girls, Harold becomes angry at the prospect that an individual with a more interesting life could be defeated, leading him to grow hatred for The Powerpuff Girls.

Secretly, Harold begins fulfilling his dream by manufacturing an improvised suit for himself, also giving himself a "weapon" in the form of a hair dryer. Coincidentally, his wife Marianne invites the Utonium family to dinner. Harold cannot control himself given this opportunity. During the dinner, he excuses himself from the table, and manifests himself as a villain and shows up at the dinner table, threatening Professor Utonium by pointing the weapon at his head. After conducting a tense hostage situation as the Girls closely watched him, Harold's act is eventually spoiled by a food war and he is thrown in jail for a week - on the idea that he had a gun.

After Harold's release in "Just Desserts", Marianne surprises him and reveals that she wants him to continue being a villain; she also announces her desire to become one, so they together can get back at the Powerpuff Girls, for believing they ruined the dinner. All of Harold's family joins in a raid at the Powerpuff Girls' house; this leads to a final confrontation with the Powerpuff Girls where the Smiths are easily defeated. Upon questioning why they do this, Marianne says that they "ruined [their] dinner". The girls point out that this is not a strong reason at all and beat them up, ending the episode with the entire Smith family in jail.

Harold and his family have not been seen or heard from since. Robin moves into their house in "Superfriends", which would mean that either the Smiths' imprisonment made the house available for sale or that the family voluntarily moved away after being released.

Profile

Appearance

Harold is a balding man with a tall head and a long nose. As a villain, wears a pair of white socks, a pair of red thermal underwear, yellow rubber gloves, a holster strapped to one hip, a blue bath mat tied around the neck for a cape, black-rimmed goggles (replacing his square glasses), and a hood with a sparkler on top of it.

Before he becomes a villain, he wears a pair of square eyeglasses, a white short-sleeved button shirt with a red necktie on the collar, brown corduroy pants, and dark brown shoes.

Personality

Harold is shown to be unhappy with his repetitive, uninteresting life. As part of his daily routine, he reads or watches the news. Harold particularly enjoys learning of Mojo Jojo's acts of villainy, seeing them as inspirations for a more eventful life. However, as he learns of Mojo Jojo's consistent defeat by the Powerpuff Girls, he grows hateful of them.

Harold tends to voice his rejection of activity and discussion that reminds him of the defeat of the villains he admires, such as when Marianne invites over the Powerpuff Girls for dinner or when the Powerpuff Girls and Bud are discussing the Girls' deeds. He trembles into submission when his wife angrily reprimands him about what he says.

When acting as a villain, Harold takes on over-the-top mannerisms by proudly declaring his newfound identity and his villainous intentions. When he takes the Professor hostage, he takes the matter completely seriously, describing his "weapon" as a "ray gun" and keeping the Professor held at "gunpoint" as Harold makes imposing but eccentric requests to his victim.

Voice

Harold has a timid, quivering voice. When faced with a discussion that sets off his insecurity, Harold tends to stutter and end up forming somewhat incoherent sentences. When acting as a villain in the presence of the Utoniums, he shouts and his voice loses its quivering quality and stuttering.
