This is a list of various things that took place in 1999.
Significant events
January
- 4 - The Fingerpoke of Doom -- an incident during a live broadcast of WCW's Monday Nitro -- airs. The incident refers to a match where New World Order Hollywood faction leader Hulk Hogan poked Kevin Nash in the chest, causing Nash to theatrically collapse to the mat before being pinned. Also during the broadcast, lead play-by-play announcer Tony Schiavone announced the results of the pre-taped WWF Monday Night Raw, revealing that wrestler Mick Foley (wrestling under his "Mankind" persona) was set to win the WWF Championship from The Rock, before sarcastically asiding, "That's gonna put some butts in the seats!" Instead of heeding Schiavone's admonishment, a reported 600,000 viewers changed channels in order to see Foley's victory. The series of events of the evening as a whole -- there were other storyline developments that received negative reviews -- were nearly universally negatively received and had overall negative ramifications for WCW as a whole, eventually leading to the company's ultimate demise two years later.
March
- 28 - Gorilla Monsoon makes his final appearance for the WWF. Noticeably frail due to terminal health issues, he is introduced as a judge for the "Brawl For All tournament final that is conducted at WrestleMania XV. Monsoon died 6-1/2 months later at age 62, following a long battle with diabetes
May
- 23 - Owen Hart dies after a ring accident at the Over the Edge pay-per-view event at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri. Hart, dressed and competing as the Blue Blazer, was to have made a superhero-like ring entrance for his match against The Godfather (for the WWF Intercontinental Championship), descending from the rafters when his harness line malfunctioned and he fell 70 feet from the top of the rafters into the ring, suffering fatal injuries. After an extended delay in which paramedics and color commentator Jerry Lawler rushed to Hart's aid, the WWF decides to continue the show. This, and the WWF's decision to not announce to the live arena audience that Hart had died from his injuries -- announcers Jim Ross and Lawler, the latter deviating from his usual "nasty heel" commentary style of the era, would tell the television audience -- drew strong criticism from fans and the Hart family. Hart was 34
- 24 - A special WWE Monday Night RAW - "Raw Is Owen," paying tribute to Owen Hart - is aired from the Kiel Center in St. Louis, Missouri. A ten-bell salute is made, special matches that did not affect current storylines take place, and the wrestlers and employees make (often tearful) out-of-character interviews reflecting on their friend and co-worker. After a card is held the following evening at the MARK of the Quad Cities in Moline, Ill. (television tapings for Shotgun Saturday Night, Sunday Night Heat and the May 31 RAW), arena house shows scheduled for the following three days were cancelled to allow wrestlers and WWF employees to grieve for Hart and attend his funeral
June
- 3 - Rena Mero files a $110 million lawsuit against the WWF, claiming sexual harassment and unsafe working conditions. The case is settled out of court in August (she had also reduced the amount of damages she was seeking), although the rights to the name "Sable" remain with the WWF
August
- 27 - ECW on TNN debuts on TNN. In the sole original match on the show's debut episode (which was otherwise comprised of promos and highlights of old matches due to Paul Heyman's dissatisfaction with the first TNN shoot), ECW World Television Champion Rob Van Dam retained his title against Jerry Lynn at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, New York, the site of 1980s tapings of the WWF's syndicated programs. Shortly afterward, to distinguish this program from its syndicated fare, the syndicated ECW is renamed as ECW Hardcore TV
September
- 10 - Eric Bischoff is relieved of his duties as World Championship Wrestling president by TBS Sports president Harvey Schiller as a result of the recent downturn in WCW's fortunes following the infamous "Fingerpoke of Doom" storyline on January 4
October
- 5 - Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara sign on as the new creative heads of WCW after resigning from the WWF. Russo's impact as the new head booker on WCW's TV shows is felt almost immediately afterward as he attempts to impose the "Crash TV" booking style he utilized in the WWF to turn that company's fortunes around for the better on WCW storylines (including his appearances as the heard, but otherwise unseen, antagonistic heel representative of the "Powers That Be"), only for it to have the opposite effect on WCW and its fortunes as its TV ratings and pay-per-view buys continued to slide
