The role of menaquinones (vitamin K2) in human health

Abstract: Recent reports have attributed the potential health benefits of vitamin K beyond its function to activate hepatic coagulation factors. Moreover, several studies have suggested that menaquinones, also known as vitamin K 2 , may be more effective in activating extra-hepatic vitamin K-dependent proteins than phylloquinone, also known as vitamin K 1 . Nevertheless, present dietary reference values (DRV) for vitamin K are exclusively based on phylloquinone, and its function in coagulation. The present review descri… Show more

“…One example includes a variety of menaquinonerelated compounds (198) that are evolutionary more ancient than ubiquinones and plastoquinones and, by virtue of their low redox midpoint potential, are proposed to be engaged in bioenergetics of cells living in reducing atmosphere of preoxygenic eon (227). On the other hand, in humans, some menaquinones (identified as vitamin K) are also present but play other roles (24,28). states were detected experimentally.…”

“…As long as robust physiological endpoints are missing to differentiate the contribution of MKs to human health from that of PK, it is unlikely that specific dietary recommendations for MKs will be widely adopted in the near future. In the meantime, a preferred recommendation could be to consume a wide variety of foods which are good sources of PKs and MKs, respectively, such as green leafy vegetables and fermented dairy products [16,49].…”

“…The selfreported mean daily intake of menaquinones in adults ranged from 20.7 μg for women in the Rotterdam Study to 43 μg in men in the UK National Dietary and Nutrition Survey. In all of these studies, cheese was the most important food source of menaquinones [49]. However, these data should be interpreted carefully because they were collected by FFQs that are designed to estimate the relative dietary intake of large populations but not to estimate absolute dietary intake.…”
