Acceptance and commitment therapy in youth with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and chronic pain and their parents: A pilot study of feasibility and preliminary efficacy

Abstract: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder affecting about 1 in 3,500 individuals. Chronic pain is commonly reported among individuals with NF1 and plexiform neurofibroma tumors (PNs). Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an empirically supported method for addressing chronic pain, helps individuals re-focus on valued relationships and activities. This pilot study investigated the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a brief ACT workshop in the NF1 population. Eligible part… Show more

“…A recent study by Ghomian and Shairi [14] on ACT for young children with chronic pain found increased functional ability after treatment compared with the control group. Furthermore, a pilot study on pediatric patients suffering from chronic pain and neurofibromatosis type 1 [15] showed that ACT may decrease pain interference.…”

“…Notably, previous interventions for adolescents have been delivered both individually [9,10,11] and in a group format [13,15], but to date, there is no scientific evaluation comparing the relative utility of these treatment formats. Furthermore, despite the evident relationship between pediatric chronic pain and family functioning, studies evaluating the effects of parental support programs on parent behaviors and distress are scarce [16].…”

“…Importantly for use in pediatric NF trials, the child and parent forms demonstrate good reliability and validity in NF1, 19 yield high correlations between parent and child scores, 19 and show sensitivity to change after behavioral interventions for chronic pain in children. 8 While good preliminary data exist in adults with NF1 (unpublished data) and other conditions involving pain, 23 more research is needed before recommending the adult version for NF trials.…”
