Soot Power (すす (のう) (りょく) , Susu Nōryoku?) is the ability to manipulate and control soot. Most of the shadows have this ability and it is often considered the key to growth and becoming an "adult" for those in the Shadows House. There are many kinds of soot powers that manifest in a variety of ways, but all of them make use of the soot from a shadow.

Moving soot according to the user's will is a basic skill known as Fundamental Soot Power for shadows who have awakened the ability. Some important attributes of fundamental soot powers are speed, dexterity, manipulation, stamina, durability, emotional control, and strength. Beyond that, each Shadow may have a unique ability influenced by their individual personality, known as Personal Soot Powers.

There are three ability types under personal soot powers. They can be considered physical, mental or from a rare, so far unnamed, third category:

  • Physical: They can materalize their soot in many different ways, such as launching projectiles, enchancing their own body, or shaping it into objects.
  • Mental: Allows the shadow to control living dolls in different ways if they inhale their breathed soot, some being able to control their movements while other can change their expressions or way of thinking. The controlled living doll can be conscious or not.
  • Third-Type: A rare category of power that can have an effect on a Shadow or disrupt their soot ability, such as controlling or canceling it out.

Using a soot power requires concentration, regardless of the type. To make it easier, some Shadows make use of intermediaries. An intermediary is an item or a mental image that can help them focus, such as a wand, or thinking about a special one.

Kate Kate has the ability to very finely manipulate her soot, creating different objects with it such as pillows, ropes, and decoys. Her powers can cover a long range, but are rather weak in terms of destructive capability. She can also manipulate the soot in her hair, turning it into wings to glide for some time. Physical

John John can launch strong bursts of soot from his fists, an ability he has named the John Punch. Although it is very strong, it is only effective if the _target is less than 2 meters away and it is exhausting to use in succession. If he chooses to solidify his burst of soot, it can turn into what he calls the John Shield and be used to block attacks instead. Physical

Louise Upon breathing her soot directly into some Living Doll's mouth, Louise is able to control their facial expressions on-demand. The effects fade if the _target is too far to receive the soot. At beginning Louise could just use it with Lou, making her to act even more loyal and in sync, but later she learns to use her ability in other dolls, being able to control a Veiled Doll in the anime and Ben in the manga. Shirley Shirley can transform by wearing the soot she emits and forming it around her body. She is known to be able to take the form of a Scorch and a ribbon.

In the anime, she has used it to appear bigger.

Maryrose Maryrose is able to create and take command of Scorches using another Shadow's soot when it makes contact with her own. These Scorches can attack a _target or perform simple tasks. They can be fused into Phantoms when exceeding large numbers.

She is also able to control her own soot, but is only able to lift or drag light objects with it.

Barbara While not exactly a soot power, Barbara's soot quantity is extremely high and capable of destroying buildings and walls nearby with explosive power, as well as causing injury. She is unable to control its destructive capability, as it only manifests when she is undergoing strong emotional distress. Physical

Susanna Susanna is capable of creating a thin, almost invisible film of soot that allows her to sense anything or anyone that comes in contact with it. This veil is extremely sensitive, alerting her to even the slightest sensations like wind. She is known to be able to maintain multiple veils with little effort. Physical

Benjamin Benjamin's soot has a mental type quality which intensifies the emotions of any Dolls that inhale it. It has a long range, being able to affect all Dolls present in the great hall. The effects last for a while even after leaving his range, but will fade with time. Mental

Oliver Oliver can link himself to machines with his soot and control them, essentially using his body as the power source. He uses his own inventions as an Intermediary, giving him the feeling of being one with his machine. Physical

The twins share the ability to control a Doll's body, forcing them to do things such as bark like a dog, dance strangely, or mess up their hair. The power has a fairly long range of activation, immediately takes effect after the _target inhales the twins' soot, and dispels once they lose concentration. The _target is aware of their body moving in ways they don't intend, but is unable to resist it. Mental

Douglas Douglas can create a floating ball of soot. When hit by a force, it immediately counters with a similar force. When Gilbert punched it with his soot power, it created a fist of similar size and force to hit him back. He is able to create balls of varying size. Physical

Jeremiah Jeremiah has the ability to create extra arms, which he can use just as he would his real arms. He has used them to restrain _targets or hold many items at once. The arms have sticky properties, granting him the ability to climb up walls. He can create at least four extra arms with his power, giving him a total of eight limbs at once. Additionally, the arms can be cut off and regenerated at will. Jeremiah has named his power Spider Hands. Physical

Lydia Lydia's soot ability is analyzing the qualities of other shadows' soot. The best results are achieved when the shadow in question is present, but it's not a requirement. She is able to analyze the composition of soot, its consistency (sticky, starchy, etc), emotions it was formed from, and any traces of perfume that the shadow may have been wearing. Lydia needs a physical soot sample to perform her analysis. Soot samples will lose their unique components over time, so the analysis is best performed early. Third-

Gilbert Gilbert can wrap hardened soot around his body and form it into armor, raising both his defensive and offensive abilities. It is highly durable, allowing him to smash walls and tear into solid objects with ease using his armor coated fists. He can redistribute the soot armor to further cover individual parts of his body, or apply it generally over his whole body. Physical

Lyndsay Lyndsay's power allows her to perform high jumps and strong kicks. While strong, the ability is physically demanding on her, so she needs to eat food to keep going after just a few actions. Physical

Margaret Margaret can create sticky soot ivy that stretches out from her body. It can encase people in spider lily-like cocoons, which she has used to capture her enemies and to protect herself. Her power was manifested from extreme anguish, and likely is a highly boosted version of what its normal potency would have been. Physical

Oscar Oscar can create sound transceivers that allow long distance communication between at least 5 people. The duration and the maximum distance they work are unknown, but they were working well even after 20 minutes in the garden maze. Physical

Stella Stella can turn her hair into two kusarigamas (chain-sickles) and use them as a weapon. She has a mental image of her fear being melted as an intermediary. Physical

Danny Danny is able to make a soot club to hit objects with a big impact. Covering an intermediary object with his soot, like a rock, can make the impact even more powerful. Physical

Laurel Laurel can create and scatter many X-shaped marks that she calls "curses". The marks can affect shadows by disabling any body parts that they touch, rendering them immobile and numb. She uses her living doll, Lulu, as an intermediary. Laurel's power grows out of her control if Lulu is hurt. Third-

Edward Edward has the ability to send vibrations through the air with his soot, creating sound. He used this to change his voice to sound like an old man in the manga, and a young woman in the anime. He can create sounds so harsh that they cause pain. Physical

Aileen Aileen can create messenger birds from her soot. These Soot Pigeons can take in a message spoken to them, travel to a specified person's location, and relay the message to them in text form. A pigeon will create a loud screech before it bursts into words on a nearby wall or the ground. In the anime, Aileen was able to create a giant soot pigeon that could carry Edward at high speeds. Gerald Gerald appears to exercise highly precise manipulation of his soot, as he was able to move several board pieces during Kate's debut to show the children's position in real-time without watching the board. In the anime, he could summon tendrils of soot to capture _targets. They could be dispelled with force, which would also put stress on Gerald. Physical

Thomas Thomas can shoot powerful, long-range bullets. He has been seen using grapes as a potential intermediary, covering them with soot before firing them off as bullets with the power to pierce through multiple _targets. More details, such as the shapes of his projectiles, or if he needs certain conditions to use his power are unconfirmed. Physical
