Overview
Haohmaru is a Shoto Character, with a tool set akin to the usual projectile+anti-air fare, his basic-yet-slower powerful strikes place emphasis on hard-reading foes with heavy-hitting attacks and less on the usual doings of combos, taking on the philosophy of embracing death in a single stroke of the blade in the Japanese way of the warrior. Even then, weaknesses in his playstyle involve the lack of anything overly flash and confusing to open-up his foes with, relying on mere fundamentals with huge damage, mainly coming from his iconic Heavy Slash, the Zantetsusen.
When his style splits in Samurai Shodown III, his Slash/Shura form retains several strategies used in previous games, being a balanced and easy-to-master mid-ranged combatant. By contrast, his Bust/Rasetsu form (which becomes the basis for Rasetsumaru) alters several moves, granting him access to aggressive close-combat fighting which includes shoulder charges (Gouha), a proximity counter (Nagi Yaiba) and wind splash wave that goes a small distance (Senpuuha) in the place of his feint. His appearance in Warriors Rage also combined some elements from Genjuro's fighting style such as his stance and crouching strikes.
However, in most crossover games, Haohmaru gains a few more conventional means to act akin to more of the usual flair of fighters with a few combos here and there, but still has emphasis on high damage (albeit toned down to not be as potent as in his home series to balance things out).
In Soul Calibur VI however, Haohmaru not only gains a plethora of extra moves with using his latest animations as reference, but also now gains the skills of both his Shura/Slash and Rasetsu/Bust attacks (even with additions from the 64 games), and also gains his low sliding move shared with Genjuro (the Nagiashi) from Sen. He also has a bare-handed stance as a nod to his home series' ability to fight unarmed (as well as the act of deliberate self-disarming in certain titles).
Note that in Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, he and Genjuro follow the usual and scheme for punches, with and for kicks; the button even then acts as a bit of both a light kick and medium slash button for them in tandem.
