Plot

The episode begins with a flashback. Earlier, in the main world, Sonic had escaped Shadow during a fight. Shadow had followed him to the Temple Mountain with the Paradox Prism located in it, but arrives too late, as Sonic had just Spin-Dashed into the Paradox Prism. Holding out the green Chaos Emerald he collected earlier, Shadow dives into the cave and uses Chaos Control to shield himself from the Prism's explosion, just as everything went blank. Shadow reappears in the Void seconds after Sonic was sent drifting through it. Shadow looks around at the Void, realizing that Sonic has made a mistake that he will not forgive or forget.

Back in the present, after helping the rebels defeat the Eggforcers in New Yoke City, Sonic leaves to go look for Nine and the Shard he has. He spots the Chaos Council's Mothership and decides to go check it out. A blue energy field appears around Sonic as he runs to check the Mothership out, along with an apparition of Shadow, who tells Sonic to keep going. Sonic complies and keeps running, and his Prism Energy is kicked up enough to teleport him out and send him back into the Void.

In another Shatterspace, another portal appears, and Sonic falls out of it and lands near an island, crashing into the sea. While recalling what he was doing, Sonic also ponders how he ended up on the island. He notices that his gear has re-calibrated to this Shatterspace. Sonic, wondering what this world's gloves and shoes do, is encountered by Black Rose, Batten Rouge (who introduced the dimension being called "No Place" to Sonic) and Sails Tails, who are pirate versions of Amy, Rouge and Tails. Believing Sonic to be a part of the "old crew", they attack him and chase him up to the top of the island. Black trips him and Sonic is sent flying, but Sails catches him before he could plummet into the water. Convinced that Sonic could not be part of the old crew, due to his speed, they spare him and prepare to head back to their ship with some coconuts. Sonic begs them to let him come. they refuse to at first, since they don't take scallywags, but Sails finds that Sonic could be useful for doing their duties, including rowing the dinghy. They agree with him, since they hate rowing the dinghy, and allow Sonic to come with them, under the condition that he complies to their captain's orders when they get back to the ship. Sonic agrees to their terms and quickly rows them back to their ship at super speed, much to their surprise. Sonic asks where their captain is. The captain is in the Crow's nest, demanding to know who that is they brought onto his ship. The crew introduces Sonic to their Captain, who is called The Dread. After climbing down from the Crow's nest to the deck, the Dread is, much to Sonic's surprise, revealed to be Knuckles.

In a flashback made in the 16-bit style from the old games, Sonic recalls the very first time he and Knuckles met, when Knuckles, who was deceived by Doctor Eggman at the time, attacked him and blocked his Spin Dash. Sonic attempted to introduce himself, but Knuckles cuts him off, saying he already knows all he needed to know from Eggman.

Back in the present, Sonic finds this understanding, but refuses to take any chances since Knuckles is a pirate in this world. Sonic grabs Sails's sword and prepares to clash with Dread, but is stopped by the smell of food cooking, much to his delight. Dread offers to give him an apple in exchange for the sword, but Sonic hastily refuses, believing that Dread and his crew want to eat him, and warns him about his quills tasting terrible. Dread laughs and tells him that the fire is for welcoming Sonic, not cooking him, and has Catfish, Big's pirate counterpart, shoot a cannon full of confetti. Sonic, looking at the party decorations all over the ship, is confused by this world's Knuckles' way he acts. Dread tells Sonic he's way to scrawny for them to eat. He confirms that it is a party for him, and a unique one, since they don't welcome newcomers so often. Sonic calls Dread his favorite Knuckles ever and sees what appears to be a chili dog sitting on a gold platter. Dread says it's called a sea dog, but advises Sonic not to ask what it's made of. Believing it to be as ok as a regular chili dog, Sonic eats it and sighs in relief, tearfully saying that the crew had no idea how much he needed it. Batten is obliged, since they are about no ideas in this world. Sonic apologies to Dread for his hostility towards him and is satisfied to know he's not really such a bad pirate. Dread says it depends on people's perspective and asks Black if he's the toughest pirate on the seas, which Black confirms. Sonic asks how he got his name if he's so friendly. Batten tells Sonic that Dread wasn't always so friendly, but Dread sternly cuts her off and says that it's a story for later. Dread then asks Sonic how he ended up on the island without a boat. After Sonic told him the events that led him to here, Dread is convinced Sonic needs to rest for a while. Sonic is tempted but has to get back to his task. Dread insists on it, especially since they are going to have a limbo contest. They start playing music and get the limbo stick out, with Dread going first. Sonic, seeing as he's not going to leave anytime soon, decides to join in on the fun. Sonic partied with Dread and his crew all day and sang in a drunken manner with Dread.

The next day, Sonic wakes up and spots the Loop-de-Loop sitting underwater, much to his disappointment that it is once again another version of Green Hill that was altered drastically. Sonic joins Dread at the bow and asks where they are headed. But Dread tells him they are not headed anywhere since they have to enjoy the day and take a load off, which Sails adds that they do every day. Dread invites Sonic to sing a ditty with him, but Sonic is eager to get home and he has to find this Shatterspace's Shard. After Sonic describes what a Prism Shard is, they tell him they have heard of something like that before: The Devil's Lighthouse, but Dread makes them keep quiet about it. Sonic begs Dread to help him find it, but Dread refuses, warning him that the Shard will be trouble for him and that he should leave it alone. Suddenly, a ship attacks The Angel's Voyage with cannonballs. Batten heads to the Crow's nest and identifies the crew commanding the ship as Dread's old crew. Dread and his new crew prepare themselves. Sonic prepares to take them on, but finds that Dread and his crew are actually hiding from them. The old crew boards the ship and start looting the Angel's Voyage, including the sea dogs, but Sonic warns them to return to their ship. The old crew refuses to back down and attack Sonic. Sonic begins fighting them, firing at them from the cannon and spin dashing them into the water. Dread and his mates are amazed by Sonic standing up to the old crew. Sonic accidentally and literally barrel rolls off the ship, but is saved when his Hovercraft Kicks activate their ability to let him run above water. He speeds on the water back to the ship, where he finds the pirates, inspired by Sonic, fighting the old crew. Dread is amazed as well. Defeated, the old crew is forced to surrender. Black and Batten prepare to kill them, but Sonic convinces them to let the old crew go to return to their ship and not bother them again. They reluctantly agree to and the old crew retreats, with Captain Jack thanking them for the sea dogs. The crew cheer over their triumph. Dread comes out of hiding, thankful for Sonic's heroism. Sonic asks again where the Shard is, and Black Rose supports his demand. She even names Sonic the new captain. Sonic says he's not the captain, but the crew tell him that because he's given them a taste of life as a true pirate and desire more, they see him as their new captain. Despite being a bit annoyed by this, Sonic asks Dread again to tell him what happened with the Shard. Seeing Sonic too stubborn to simply just drop it, Dread gives in and grants Black permission to tell the story but warns Sonic that he's paying a big price by asking for this. Black Rose recites the story:

Many years ago, Dread was the most fearsome pirate in the seven seas. He has gotten his hands on many treasures, but he was determined to get the one treasure that eluded every pirate's grasp: The Devil's Lighthouse. He found the map that would lead to it. Dread sailed to the location of the lighthouse, which was easy, but the hard part was getting to it. Despite his old crew's pleas to stop, Dread was determined to get the Devil's lighthouse. However, his obsession led to disaster. He had shipwrecked on one of the rocks and sunk to the bottom of the ocean. He swam up to the surface of the water, but was abandoned by his former crew, who berated him for his selfish actions and named Jack the new captain. Dread was left on a life preserver, cursed with his reputation tarnished and his name disgraced, and his courage stolen from him.

Ever since that day, Dread has sworn never to sail near The Devil's Lighthouse again. However, Sonic reminds him that he isn't the kind of person that would never give up, especially since he's also a pirate who made it out of a shipwreck and got himself a gold tooth. Sonic asks Dread to help him find the map to the Devil's Lighthouse and in return, Sonic will help Dread get his pirate groove back. But Dread tells him that the map is somewhere in the ocean with his old ship, and that he's on his own in finding it, refusing to lose his way again. Sonic realizes that without the map, he won't find the Shard, which means he's trapped in No Place. Sails asks Sonic if he could analyze his Hovercraft Kicks and their amazing design. This helps Sonic remember that since the Regulators on Sonic's sneakers channel Sonic's Prism Energy to locate the Shards, he can use his Hovercraft Kicks to find the Shard. He runs around the Angel's Voyage, attempting to get a lock on the Shard Energy. He runs to the very end of the bow and picks up the Shard Energy, then orders the crew to sail the ship towards that direction. Dread confronts Sonic for taking over his job as captain, but is surprisingly ok with it. Sonic is confused about this. Dread reminds him of his past and Sonic agrees but is desperate to get that Shard. So, Dread then puts him in charge of getting them to The Devil's Lighthouse and getting the Shard, hoping that Sonic won't screw up like Dread did, and gives him his captain's hat. Batten then tells Sonic that something's coming toward the ship off the port side, and it's assumed to be a whale, while Sonic dreads it about being an orca. Dread directs him to the port, and Sonic runs there. There is something heading towards them in the water, but it is not a whale. It surfaces on the starboard side, revealing to be the Kraken sent from New Yoke City. It opens its hatch, revealing a medium army of Eggforcers. Rusty Rose presents herself to Sonic and the crew, much to his surprise. Sonic asks Rusty how she got here. Rusty tells Sonic that he shouldn't have underestimated the Chaos Council. On Rusty's command, the Eggforcers open fire on the Angel's Voyage. Everyone begins to run away, while Sonic looks on with worry and says "Oh, coconuts" as the episode ends.

Regional differences

  • The distorted effect from Sonic's voice after landing in water is not present in the Thai dub.
  • All characters' voice effects are removed in the Hindi dub, in contrast to all other episodes where such effects are retained from the English version.
  • After Sails Tails grabs hold of Sonic and brings him to Black Rose and Batten Rouge, Sonic bemoans in the English version, "I'm caught between the devil and the deep blue sea." In the Mandarin Chinese dub, he makes a final plea to the crew that he is just an innocent hedgehog.
  • When Sonic volunteers to sail Dread's crew back aboard the Angel's Voyage, Black Rose lays out her condition to Sonic in the English version as "But, there is one condition when we get back to the ship. It's Captain's orders or else!", whereas in the Mandarin Chinese dub it is translated to "但要上來有個條件,就是讓我回到船上。這可是船長的命令,要不然呢..." ("But if you want to get on board, there is one condition, that is, to get me back to the ship. This is the Captain's order, or else...").

Trivia

  • When Sonic says he hopes there aren't any orcas around, that is a reference to the many times he was being chased by them in games such as Sonic Adventure and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
  • The character Captain Jack is voiced by Sean McLoughlin, also known online as "Jacksepticeye". This makes Sean the only actor in Sonic Prime that is not Canadian.
  • When everyone is sleeping, there is an animation error where Black Rose's chest is seen clipping through her clothes.
  • A flashback referring to Sonic and Knuckles meeting for the first time references Sonic & Knuckles, yet the sprites differ and Knuckles now has the ability to throw rocks.
