Lava Reef (ラバーリーフ, Rabā Rīfu?) is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a volcanic area on Angel Island, best known for housing the Hidden Palace, which contains the shrine of the Super Emeralds and Master Emerald.
Description
Lava Reef is a region on Angel Island filled with volcanoes and lakes of lava. The area is mostly made out of orange cobblestones. Underground, it houses a massive cave with various tunnels and open areas with natural stone pillars. These cave systems are connected to the neighboring Sandopolis through hidden passageways found deep within that region's pyramids.
Deep underground of Lava Reef is a crystal wonderland with shining gemstones. Giant cracks above make the sky visible, and the rocks take a blue hue. Deep inside this area is the "Hidden Palace", a sacred temple that is best known for hosting the altar of the Super Emeralds, with the Master Emerald at the center.[1][2] This shrine, as well as the Altar of Emerald found elsewhere on Angel Island, is the one that gives the floating island its bouyancy when the Master Emerald is inserted on it. As such, should the massive Emerald be removed from the altar, Angel Island will slowly fall down from the skies. The Hidden Palace also has Warp Point which serve to take the user to areas like the Sky Sanctuary or Little Planet.
Curiously, Lava Reef is very industrialized, possibly due to influence from the Eggman Empire. Several pipes, machines, traps, and other contraptions are everywhere in the area, particularly around the area near Hidden Palace. Noticeably, as of the Phantom Ruby incident, this place houses a massive Eggman base of unknown use.
History
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
In Sonic & Knuckles, and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, a volcano in Lava Reef was where the Death Egg crash-landed onto after its failed launch from the Launch Base. Refusing to give up, the infamous Dr. Eggman began repairing the damaged spaceship while arming Lava Reef with Badniks and traps.[2] Meanwhile, Sonic and Tails would set out to destroy the Death Egg once and for all.
Eventually, Sonic and Tails made their way to Lava Reef through a hidden passageway in Sandopolis. From there, the heroes proceeded through the volcanic tunnels to below the crater where the Death Egg was onto. However, Knuckles halted their progress by throwing a boulder at them, causing them to fall deeper into the cave. Here, Dr. Eggman activated his spaceship's laser eyes to reactivate the dormant volcano and used the Egg Inferno in an attempt to take the heroes out with missiles and other armaments.
Despite the odds, the duo was able to escape this hellish landscape and go to the Hidden Palace, where Knuckles was waiting them for a duel. However, their fight was interrupted when they saw Eggman stealing the Master Emerald with his Egg Mobile. The echidna, who had previously been working with the doctor, discovered that he had been deceived and desperately tried to retrieve the Emerald, but was electrocuted as the doctor escape. Knuckles then joined forces with the true heroes and guided them to a Warp Point that took them to the Sky Sanctuary. In the end, Sonic and Tails managed to destroy the Death Egg and recuperate the Master Emerald, which Knuckles returned to its proper place.
Much later, Knuckles arrived in Lava Reef from Sandopolis, as part of an adventure of his to destroy an Eggrobo that had attacked him. The echidna made his way through the volcano's underground tunnel system and into the Hidden Palace, where he took a Warp Point that took him to the Sky Sanctuary.
Sonic Mania
In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, the previously dormant volcanoes in Lava Reef became fully active in the aftermath of the Death Egg's attack.[3] During an adventure to stop Dr. Eggman from exploiting the Phantom Ruby's powers, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles took a trip on an airship in Oil Ocean that led them to Lava Reef. From here, the trio made their way through the volcano's hazardous tunnels and into the area of the Hidden Palace, which had now been turned into a massive, heavily industrialized Eggman base. It was also here that they saw the chained Little Planet in the sky, revealing that the doctor had trapped the small planet for his plans once again. The heroes then split up: Sonic and Tails took an upper route that led them to a spaceship, where they fought the Heavy Rider, one of the Hard Boiled Heavies. After defeating the robot, the two were led to Metallic Madness on Little Planet by the ship. Meanwhile, Knuckles went to the Hidden Palace, where he found the Heavy King, the leader of the HBH, trying to steal the Master Emerald. Not wanting a repeat of what had happened previously, the echidna stopped the theft and defeated the Heavy King. He would soon after take a Warp Point that led him to Metallic Madness, where he reunited with his comrades.
Sonic Mania Plus
In Sonic Mania Plus, following his return from the War to Take Back the Planet, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty and Ray travelled to Lava Reef in order to stop Eggman from abusing the Phantom Ruby once again. After making their way through this location, the heroes fought the Heavy Rider or the Heavy King and went to Little Planet, which had been caught by the doctor once again.

Sonic Frontiers
In Sonic Frontiers, Lava Reef can, at random, be mentioned by Sonic on Chaos Island, comparing both volcanic regions to each other.[4]
Sonic the Hedgehog Level Pack (LEGO Dimensions)
The Sonic the Hedgehog Level Pack in LEGO Dimensions features a Lava Reef area within the adventure world.

Archie Comics
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by Archie Comics, Lava Reef was a location on Angel Island. It was originally the Fire Ants' place of residence until the Dark Legion came and turned it into their hiding place. Sonic, Knuckles, and the Chaotix later visited Lava Reef when they went to rescue Locke from captivity.
Sonic the Comic
In the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions, Lava Reef Zone is a Zone set in the volcano on the Floating Island. Sonic and Knuckles pass through here after escaping from Sandopolis Zone. There, they found the Death Egg II sitting in the volcano's funnel. A squadron of EggRobos soon after arrived, but were defeated by Knuckles, who proceeded to the Emerald Chamber with Sonic. Later, Knuckles would return to Lava Reef Zone to rescue a boy named Jake from an Eggrobo.
IDW Publishing
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, Lava Reef is visited by Knuckles to investigate a strange pillar of fire. While there, he discovers Blaze arrived on his island, who had come to talk to him. Blaze explains she wanted advice from another guardian. As they walk through the area, Blaze asks Knuckles if it is ever acceptable to step away from one's duties instead of honoring them at all times. Knuckles questions Blaze's duties, but eventually suggests she take a vacation. Afterwards, the two part ways and leave the Lava Reef.[5]
Fang's Big Break
At one point, Fang the Hunter broke into the Hidden Palace in an attempt to steal the Master Emerald from its shrine. However, his plan backfired thanks to Knuckles.[6]
