Mount Humongous is an undersea volcano that is nearby the town of Bikini Bottom. It appears in SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical.

History

In its appearance in the musical, during Act 1, it was dormant at first. Still, shortly after the show's first song (Bikini Bottom Day), it suddenly starts to tremor, which rocks the whole town of Bikini Bottom. After the violent quake that rocks the entire town, Squidward wonders if the earthquake is something they should worry about. Still, SpongeBob doubts it until the Bikini Bottom News comes on. Reporter Perch Perkins reports what was the cause of the violent tremor as Mount Humongous starts to spew out smoke from its top. The mayor then says to all the townspeople that if the volcano erupts, lava flows will occur, Bikini Bottom will be destroyed, and everyone will die. The mayor even orders all places in town to close for the day, and everyone must return home. Later, Sandy reports that the volcano Mount Humongous is about to erupt. According to her times' tables, the volcano will erupt the next day. When the volcano blows, it will destroy Bikini Bottom. The volcano caused all the people to fear that the end was coming singing the show's second song ("No Control"). Later, when SpongeBob and Patrick go see Sandy, SpongeBob suggests that they should find a way to stop the eruption from happening and save the town. This will open the note to the show's seventh song (Hero Is My Middle Name). But Sandy initially refuses and says there's nothing they can do until, during the song, she realizes they probably could find a way. Later that night, as Mount Humongous still prepares to blow, it spews out giant boulders which hit the town. This causes Sandy and SpongeBob to realize they must do something leading into the ninth song and the final one of Act I ("Tomorrow Is").

The next day in Act II, Sandy shows SpongeBob a special bomb they'll use to try to stop Mount Humongous' eruption, called The Eruptor Interrupter, which is set to activate at the exact time the volcano was to erupt. So the two go to the volcano to prevent it from blowing up. They first encounter a sign before climbing it that says, "Mount Humongous, Must likely to Kill You!" SpongeBob and Sandy start to climb Mount Humongous beginning the show's thirteenth song and the fourth one of Act II ("Chop to the Top"). While SpongeBob and Sandy are climbing the volcano, they find themselves separated when SpongeBob falls through a crack. But in the nick of time, Patrick arrives flying on Sandy's jet pack and saves SpongeBob from falling. Patrick then joins SpongeBob and Sandy on their journey up the volcano. Finally, they reach the top, but neither Sandy nor Patrick can make it to the rim, where they need to throw the Eruptor Interrupter bomb. So SpongeBob has to do it. He's the only one who can squeeze through the cracks. SpongeBob doubts it at first, but Sandy and Patrick remind him that his cheerfulness and optimism got them this far. SpongeBob takes The Eruptor Interrupter and makes his way through the rim. SpongeBob then throws it into the volcano's mouth. After that, they had to wait ten minutes to see if The Eruptor Interrupter worked. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy head back down the volcano and go to tell their friends what they just did.

SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy return to Bikini Bottom to calm all the townspeople down and tell them whatever happens; they'll always have each other, beginning the show's seventeenth song and eighth one of Act II ("Best Day Ever"). Finally, the time comes for Mount Humongous to erupt, but as everyone braces for their deaths, nothing happens. Instead, the volcano spews out harmless bubbles. This signals The Eruptor Interrupter worked. With Bikini Bottom saved, everyone celebrates by having a new concert. SpongeBob leads the cast in a rousing rendition of the show's theme song. Patchy the Pirate joins in the celebration as well.

Trivia

  • There is another landmark named "Mount Humongous" in "Giant Squidward," except that one is a sand mountain.
  • It seems to be made of cardboard boxes and ladders.
  • It could be inspired by Mount Vesuvius, a real-life volcano located near the ruins of Pompeii, which was destroyed in the eruption in 79 AD.
