Synopsis

The episode opens as Patrick is seen using whoopee cushions on his feet in an episode of his show. Everyone cheers for the star, while Lady Upturn is offended. Patrick states that he can do a lot worse as he inflates his whoopee cushions and flies into the air, landing, and causing a massive explosion. Squidina then thinks Patrick is falling again, who appears to be in his room. Instead, Slappy was the one taking a dive, saying it was dynamite as he crashes into Squidina.

Patrick then inflates Squidina back to normal as the star finds out that the entire audience has left. He finds Lady Upturn's bag with tons of riches stocked inside of it, as well as an invite to King Neptune's ball, which is happening tonight. Patrick thinks it's a letter for him and his family, deciding to all get costumes for the party through the time closet.

After preparing for the ball, the Stars arrive at Neptune's palace with their car as they crash into one of his statues. Lady Upturn, however, isn't allowed to enter, as she doesn't have an invite on her. As the Stars enter the party, Tinkle, being the rowdy pet he is, isn't allowed. Before the family go off and enjoy themselves, Bunny tells everyone to keep themselves on their best behavior - but no-one pays attention and runs off, to the mother's indifference.

Each of the Star family members create chaos at the ball. Patrick chugs down all the food he can see at the food table, even when one of the fish shows him the proper way to eat. Bunny sees two woman fish to hang out with and they like Bunny's outfit, but Bunny's headdress eats one of the fish's neckless and chews the skeleton back out - scaring them away. Squidina disrupts the DJ's follies, trying to help improve the sound, but proving to be nothing more than a nuisance. Meanwhile, Lady Upturn continues trying to find a way into the party. She finds Tinkle and decides to paint the pet toilet gold so the two can both join.

GrandPat finds himself alongside a group of elderly soldiers, telling stories from their ventures in hunting and war. GrandPat then joins them and starts a hunt, blowing a horn and prompting a fight with the "hunted" animals. Elsewhere, Bunny takes Cecil to a piano performance, but Cecil's kelp chips set up a chain of events that gets him lodged into the insides of the piano. Everyone's quite had it with the Star family's antics, and Lady Upturn (inhabiting a golden Tinkle) accuses them of being imposters, as they aren't rich. The guards capture the Star family and brings up to King Neptune, and it looks like the Stars have reached their untimely doom.

Neptune questions who's "pooping on his party," and Lady Upturn says that the Stars snook into the ball without a proper invitation. Patrick apologizes to King Neptune, but his apology is cut short, as the king of the sea is actually The Patrick Show's biggest fan, loving the recent whoopee cushion segment. This prompts everyone (except Lady Upturn) to celebrate the party over at the Star house.

Everyone partying at the Star house.

Almost everyone's having the most joyous of times at the relocated ball, except Lady Upturn, who wasn't invited. Tinkle decides to help her out, continuing the "gold-painted toilet" scheme from earlier to get in. The guards let the two in, and everybody's having a good time as the episode is curtained off to an end.

Art

Design

  • Designed by Maxwell Atoms.[4]

Storyboards

  • Rough boarded by Charlie Jackson, Allen Zhang, and Nora Meek, plussed by storyboard artists on their team, revised by Jasmine Reyes.[2][3]

Production notes

Jasmine Reyes:

  • Reyes worked on "character clean ups, revising crowd shots, plus-ups, gross-ups and character acting throughout" as she storyboarded the episode.[3]

Maxwell Atoms:

  • According to Atoms, Neptune's palace never had a full design done prior to this episode, so he created a design for the storyboard artists on the episode to use as reference. He said "there needed to be multiple areas for socializing and subterfuge" for the people invited to the ball, and Atoms "wanted some lobster topiary." He hadn't seen the finished episode, but wished it luck.[4]

Trivia

General

  • According to Jasmine Reyes, a storyboard artist on this episode, Nora Meek storyboarded some scenes in this episode,[3] even though she typically only works on the series paired with Zoë Moss.
  • Maxwell Atoms directed this episode, but went uncredited,[4] making it the final episode of the series he directed. He would return as a storyboard artist on "All Out of Idea Bricks" / "A Fool Schooled."
  • This episode marks the first physical appearance of King Neptune on The Patrick Star Show, though his name has been mentioned in previous episodes, with them being:
  • This episode was initially called "King Neptune's Ball," with the only difference being that the word "King" was removed from the title.[1][2][3]
  • In the storyboards of the episode, as everyone is partying in Neptune's palace, Patrick says "Hey everybody, let's take this party to my place!"[3] In the final episode, he says "Let's take this party to some place worse!"
Neptune's Ball 079
Patrick with a non-anthropomorphic lobster.
  • Patrick is shown eating cooked lobster in this episode. Considering that anthropomorphic lobsters have been shown in the franchise, this comes off as odd.
    • The same be said for the mounted fish and walrus found in the hunting sector of Neptune's palace, as anthropomorphic pinnipeds and fish have also appeared in the franchise.
  • This marks the second time walruses have appeared in the franchise. The first was the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Company Picnic."
  • The Patrick Star Show theme song is played by King Neptune's DJ several times during the episode. Following its usage here, it would start to become a commonplace track in the series.
  • For most of the episode, Incidental F9 appears much older that usual, with visible wrinkles and gray hair. However, at the end of the episode she has her normal design instead.
  • This marks the first appearance of King Neptune's castle in The Patrick Star Show, as well as its first appearance in 12 years since "The Clash of Triton."
  • This marks the only episode where Tom Kenny voices the Bouncer.
  • The plot for this episode is similar to the SpongeBob SquarePants season 10 episode "Krusty Katering" as it also focuses on the main characters and their antics at a party. Additionally, both episodes feature Lady Upturn.
