"Across the Burning Sands of Tatooine" is a short story by Grant S. Boucher originally published in the West End Games sourcebook Galaxy Guide 1: A New Hope. It was later included in The Movie Trilogy Sourcebook.
Plot summary
In Alliance to Restore the Republic historian Voren Na'al's personal account of his arrival on Tatooine to research the events that occurred there leading up to the Battle of Yavin, he encounters a group of Jawas at the Mos Eisley Cantina who sell him R5-D4 and a power droid. Initially upset upon discovering the R5 droid's faulty motivator, he is pleased to learn that they were present for the sale of C-3PO and R2-D2 to Owen Lars and Luke Skywalker. After retrieving the information he needed from the droids, Na'al gave the power droid to a moisture farmer and sold R5-D4 to the Imperial Prefect's assistant administrator. He intends for the R5 droid—which he nicknames Red—to serve as a spy for the Alliance, a fact known only to Momaw Nadon.
