A battleship was a large, armored, and heavily armed[1] type of capital ship that not only was armed for fighting, but was also typically designed to transport ground troops, launch squadrons of starfighters, and serve as mobile hospitals.[2] Battleships were designed to be part of force projection, fleet actions, and for bombarding planets.[1]
History
The Alsakan Conflicts saw the first deployment of capital ships that matched the scale of those used in the later Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War. This "dreadnought era" ended with the development of cutting-edge turbolasers that could tear apart ray shields, therefore rendering large warships obsolete. Battleships returned to the spacelanes after Verpine shipbuilders revolutionized deflector shield design, only to fall out of favor once again amid economic strains and Republic restrictions on capital ships larger than modern cruisers.[3]
Types of battleships
Lucrehulk-class Battleship
The Lucrehulk-class Battleship was a modified version of the Lucrehulk-class LH-3210 cargo freighter used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[4]
Starhawk-class battleship
The Starhawk-class battleship was a type of warship created by Nadiri Dockyards using parts from Imperial-class Star Destroyers for the New Republic. There were two variants, the Starhawk-class Battleship Mark I and the Starhawk-class Battleship Mark II.[5]
