Carrots, also known as space-carrots, were a favorite food of rabbits. Eating space carrots was said to improve eyesight. Thus, many people incorrectly assumed that the rabbit-like Lepi were sharp-eyed space-carrot eaters. In truth, Lepi were omnivores with a preference for meat, and their sharp vision was due to their large eyes.

Behind the scenes

The joke is a reference to the myth that carrots improve vision. This was started as a rumour by the British Air Force during World War II as a cover for the advantage that the, then new and secret, technology Radar gave pilots. In fact, carrots are a good source of beta-carotene, which the body coverts to vitamin A. This does support eye health, however noticeable improvement in eyesight is only present in those with vitamin A deficiency.
