Emissary of the Void is a six-part serialized Legends novella written by Greg Keyes. It is considered the tenth installment of the New Jedi Order series. The first three parts of the story were printed in Star Wars Gamer magazine 8-10 until the end of the title's run and the final three parts were later published in Star Wars Insider magazine 62-64. The first three parts of the story were made freely available online at StarWars.com, prior to the printing of the final three chapters in Insider. All six chapters were later reprinted on Hyperspace for members only.[3] To this date, Emissary of the Void is the only New Jedi Order tale not to be collected in print, in its entirety, or released as an eBook.
Plot summary
It is a dark time for the New Republic as well as the entire galaxy. The Yuuzhan Vong War continues to rage — now in its second year. In the wake of the Yuuzhan Vong Invasion, which began at Vector Prime and has now spread across the entire Outer Rim; whole systems have been destroyed and trillions of lives lost. No species is spared in the wake of this brutal wave of death and destruction.
The Jedi Order remains the last glimmer of hope for the imperiled galaxy; even though their Jedi abilities are confounded by the Yuuzhan Vong, who cannot be sensed through the Force. Fortunately, the Jedi quickly learn that these extra-galactic invaders are susceptible to some Force-based attacks, which has allowed them to slow the relentless advance of the Yuuzhan Vong.
Tsavong Lah, the Yuuzhan Vong Warmaster, has countered the Jedi threat by proclaiming that he will halt his invasion of the galaxy if all Jedi are captured. This proclamation has resulted in Jedi being hunted down across the galaxy — either to be killed or captured by the Yuuzhan Vong, the desperate citizens of the galaxy, or the paramilitary group known as the 'Peace Brigade'.
With the assistance of the Peace Brigade, the Yuuzhan Vong have now overrun Yavin 4 and the Jedi Praxeum located there; resulting in many Jedi killed or captured and only a handful escaping the massacre. Young Anakin and Tahiri manage to escape from their captors — but not unscathed. Anakin is gravely wounded and Tahiri has been "shaped" by the Yuuzhan Vong prior to their escape.
In the aftermath of the Jedi Praxeum's destruction, the remaining Jedi continue to be hunted — by friend and foe alike — and have once again gone into hiding. The Yuuzhan Vong onslaught now seems unstoppable and without the Jedi to defend it, the future of the New Republic and the galaxy, itself, is bleak.
Set during the Yuuzhan Vong War, the story revolves around the adventures of rescue pilot Uldir Lochett and hunted Jedi Klin-Fa Gi.
Behind the scenes
Emissary Of The Void begins after The New Jedi Order: Edge of Victory I: Conquest with the first four parts taking place before Edge Of Victory II: Rebirth. The final two parts of Emissary of the Void weave their way throughout the events of Rebirth.
For the later online reprints, "The War on Wayland" incorrectly had "The" dropped from the title, becoming "War on Wayland".
