Emil Blonsky, also better known as the Abomination, is the main antagonist of Peter David's novelization of The Incredible Hulk. He was a Russian-born English-raised soldier loaned to SOCOM by the Royal Marines and tasked by Thunderbolt Ross to capture Bruce Banner.
After being given a dosage of the recreated Super Soldier Serum and seeing Banner's powers as the Hulk, the already unstable Blonsky became even more power-hungry and gained a dosage of Banner's blood and became a deformed but formidable monster, obsessing over gaining power over the vulnerable and killing anyone in his path.
Personality
Unlike the original film counterpart, who had honorable qualities and eventually redeemed himself by She-Hulk, in Peter David's novelization, Blonsky developed a more sinister and obsessive motivation behind wanting his power, revealing that he wishes to gain the power of life and death over people weaker than he was. Even before becoming Abomination, when he first introduces himself, he makes it clear that he was in for it as long as there was "someone to shoot", making the other soldiers uncomfortable. He also didn't care who he harmed in his quest to find Banner, even tranquilizing two innocent dogs just for barking at him in his pursuit.
When the Hulk arrives to fight Abomination during his rampage in the city, Abomination is proud to take down "a real fight"-showing sadistic delight in doing so. He is also shown to be somewhat misogynistic as when he knocks out Major Sparr, he refers to her as an "annoying bitch", and also has no qualms about trying to kill Betty Ross. This is evident when he tries to force the Hulk to watch her die in an exploding helicopter.
Biography
Like the movie, Emil Blonsky was a Captain in the British Royal Marines and was on loan to the Strategic Operations Command Center. He later helps General Ross track down Bruce Banner / the Hulk. When he first saw the power that the Hulk possessed, Blonsky became obsessed. He started off by getting an injection that would grant heightened agility and accelerated healing factor. After the Hulk hospitalized Blonsky, Blonsky wanted more of the injections. After Blonsky encounters Banner, he knocks him out due to him getting tranquilized. He is later subdued by one of Ross' men. General Ross then arrested Banner, but Blonsky stayed to "interrogate" Samuel Sterns after knocking out Kathleen Sparr, and killing the soldier who stopped him in his interrogation of Banner.
Blonsky realized that Sterns extracted some of the Hulk's blood, and wants it so he can become stronger than the Hulk. Sterns reluctantly accepts and injects the blood into Blonsky. Blonsky then transforms in the Abomination, knocks Sterns out, and attacks the city, killing many more of Ross' soldiers and several citizens. General Ross releases Banner so he can fight the Abomination. After a long fight, Hulk manage to defeat the Abomination. Hulk was intending to kill the Abomination by strangling him to death with a chain, but Betty stops him. The Abomination was presumably sent to a special prison under Tony Stark's care.
Powers and Abilities
Powers
- Superhuman Physiology: Due to being injected with an unknown variant of the Super Soldier Serum and the injection of Hulk's gamma irradiated blood, Blonsky possesses several superhuman physical attributes:
- Superhuman Strength: Like Hulk, Abomination's most prominent ability is his extraordinary superhuman strength. His incredible strength allows him to hurl normal humans and cars great distances, easily tear through brick buildings, and even to kick Hulk through a building.
- Superhuman Leaps: Abomination's strength also extends to his legs, allowing him to leap great distances or great heights. He is able to leap several stories from ground level, using buildings and other structures as footholds to reach areas and also able to leap from a rooftop to a moving helicopter.
- Superhuman Durability: Like Hulk, Abomination is able to withstand blows and attacks of considerable force. His bone, skin, and muscles have an extreme density and he possesses a high degree of resistance to injury, pain, and disease, even fire and explosions at close range. He was able to withstand high-caliber bullets and even Hulk's melee attacks.
- Superhuman Speed: Regardless of his size, Abomination's superhumanly strong legs allow him to run at speeds that are far beyond the natural physical limits of a human being. He also possesses enhanced reflexes and agility proportionate to his size, but his large size can still be exploited by smaller foes to use to their advantage.
- Superhuman Stamina: Abomination's advanced musculature is considerably more efficient than that of normal humans. As a result, his muscles produce practically no fatigue toxins during physical activity compared to those of humans. His virtually inexhaustible stamina enables him to exert himself at peak capacity for an undefined period of time without tiring at all.
- Accelerated Healing Factor: Abomination's advanced healing factor is further enhanced, allowing him to heal at the same rate as Hulk, which is already a very high rate of regeneration.
- Skeletal Bone Spikes: Abomination possesses sharp spikes on his arms, elbows, back, and feet, enabling him to cause a deep wound on Hulk's chest, cutting right through the latter's extremely durable flesh.
- Transformation: Much like the Hulk, Abomination is able to transform into a giant monster, but it remains unknown as to whether on not he change back as his film counterpart can.
- Superhuman Strength: Like Hulk, Abomination's most prominent ability is his extraordinary superhuman strength. His incredible strength allows him to hurl normal humans and cars great distances, easily tear through brick buildings, and even to kick Hulk through a building.
