Adam Rain

Ladies and gentlemen…truth is what the storyteller brings you. He holds up a mirror to your soul and reflects back the truth of what happened, or in this case, what should've happened. And so without further ado, the Rain Theater proudly continues that great tradition in this very special matinee performance of 'The Robbery', a family tale of love...and redemption.Adam greets his audience.

Adam Rain is a major antagonist from the CBS crime drama series Criminal Minds. He is a delusional serial killer who appears as the main antagonist of the Season 8 episode "The Lesson".

As an adult, he is portrayed by Brad Dourif, who also portrayed Chucky the Killer Doll in the Child's Play franchise, Jack Dante in Death Machine, Deputy Sheriff Clinton Pell in Mississippi Burning, the Gemini Killer in The Exorcist III: Legion, Mathias in Fading of the Cries, and Gríma Wormtongue in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. As a child, he is portrayed by Noah Darden.

Biography

Adam was born on April 16, 1961. He was the son of a famous puppeteer named Alex Rain. Alex never told Adam the puppets weren't alive, so when a robber tied both him and his father up, he expected the two puppets, Mitch and Stephanie, who were nearby, to rescue them. But, they didn't, and his father was shot right in front of him. Sometime in the future, Adam's mother died in a car accident, and in 2012, he himself got into an accident that left him in a coma at the Winslow General Hospital. The accident also damaged his brain, making him believe he was a child again and taking away his ability to understand right and wrong. One year later, Adam woke up, and desperately wanted to tell the story of what happened to him as a child.

With his imaginary friend Mr. Conrad, he abducted people who were good potential candidates as replacements for Mitch and Stephanie. Adam wanted to act out the delusion that the puppets saved his father's life, but the men would either die from the hanging, or get too rowdy to control. Adam would kill them, put their corpses in a box and leave them out in public areas.

The Lesson

Three months after Adam awoke, the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) is put on the case, when three of Adam's "marionettes" show up in Winslow, Arizona.

He kidnaps a father and son to serve as his "actors", and arranges several marionettes as his "audience". Meanwhile, the BAU questions Tucker White, a clerk at the clothing store where Adam buys the costumes he uses for his marionettes. White goes to Adam's house to ask him what is going on, and Adam knocks him out and turns him into a marionette. Tucker refuses to play along, however, so Adam throws him to the floor and threatens to kill the "father", shooting him in the leg.

As Adam prepares for his "opening night", the BAU revises their profile of the killer to include puppeteers, and realize that he is kidnapping men to symbolically replace a father figure. Technical analyst Penelope Garcia cross-references puppeteers in the area with childhood traumas involving the loss of a parent, and uncovers Adam's childhood trauma.

They find Adam in his theatre performing his "play", and Agents Aaron Hotchner and David Rossi try to talk him down, telling him that he can save his father by sparing his victims. Adam breaks down sobbing as the BAU take him into custody, and is presumably institutionalized.
