I'm counting on you... My little detective...!Akemi Miyano's last words shortly before her death.
Dai... if I manage to escape from the organization, can we try again? – AkemiAkemi's SMS to Shuichi Akai.
Akemi Miyano (jap. 宮野 明美, Miyano Akemi) was Shiho Miyano's older sister and worked under the alias Masami Hirota (jap. 広田 雅美, Hirota Masami) in the Black Organization.
Gin, who wouldn't reveal where the billion yen worth of loot was hidden after the robbery, murdered her. She knew Conan's true identity.
She was voiced by Sakiko Tamagawa, who also voiced Deathstar.
Appearance and personality
Akemi was a slim and pretty young woman with long brown hair. She always wore a side parting and her short bangs fell loosely to the side. The brown of her hair changed throughout the series, from dark brown to natural brown to black brown.
Ai and Conan compared her personality to Ran's, as both would have no hesitation in sacrificing their lives for other people. Akemi was very caring, smart and cheerful. She was always friendly and had an open-minded manner. She was very popular even when she was at school. When she tried to escape from the organization along with her sister, Akemi showed that she was a strong-willed person. However, according to Shuichi, she also had a vulnerable side and often cried when she was alone, probably because of her painful past. She also had a talent for disguises.
Past
Childhood
When Atsushi Miyano began his research work in the organization, he rented his house to designer Sohei Dejima.
Dejima's employee, Tetsuo Imai, harbored a grudge against his employer for ruining various job offers and considered killing him. One day Miyano came to visit with Akemi and his wife Elena. When Akemi came into the kitchen and noticed Imai's anger, she smiled at him and banished any thoughts of murder.
Due to the organization, Akemi had to change schools very often as a child, which also prompted her to attend Teitan Elementary School, where she graduated from Class 6-A in the 19th grade.
Akemi and Bourbon
Akemi spotted the injured Bourbon on the street, who had earlier argued with some kids over comments about his hair color. She then took him to her mother's doctor's office and Elena tended to the injured boy, who turned out to be a frequent patient of hers. Young Akemi was helping her mother, so she bandaged Bourbon's wound after Elena disinfected it. Meanwhile, they both overheard Akemi's parents talking and learned that Elena was three months pregnant.
University years
While Shiho was forced to study in the United States, Akemi continued to live in Japan and was closely monitored by the Organization. One day she joined the association to support her sister. She lived under the name of her university professor, Masami Hirota.
A few years before her death, Akemi vacationed with Professor Hirota and some colleagues, of whom she sent Shiho vacation photos on a floppy disk. When Shiho sent it back, there was also a floppy disk with the recipe for APTX 4869 in the envelope by mistake. Hirota received a copy of this disk and kept it.
The text to Akai
A day before he was due to leave the organization, Shuichi Akai told Akemi that he worked for the FBI. She had known that all along and that he was taking advantage of her, but since she loved him she didn't betray him. Before the robbery, she texted Shuichi that she'd have liked to date him again.
Return to home
About a week before her death, Akemi came back to the Miyano family home and said she needed to go to the bathroom for a moment. On this occasion, she hid a bag of audiocassettes that her mother Elena had recorded for Shiho on the float of the water tank. With Akemi under constant surveillance, she had to find a neutral location where Shiho would one day find the tapes.
In addition, Akemi managed to banish Imai's thoughts of murder once more and announced that she'd have also brought her sister with her next visit. However, she was unable to keep her promise as she was killed the following week.
Present
Akemi is hired by the Organization to rob a billion yen from a bank along with Kenzo and Akira Hirota. After a successful mission, however, Kenzo goes into hiding alone with the money. Akemi then seeks out Kogoro Mori, while posing as Kenzo Hirota's daughter, Masami. When Kogoro finally locates her accomplice, she confronts him. Akira, who also interferes in the conversation, loses his temper and kills Kenzo.
The next day, Akira settles into a hotel room with the money and is surprised by Akemi. She wants to calm him down with a prepared canned drink, but finds out that the supposed sleeping pills are actually potassium cyanide. She leaves her dead accomplice in the room and hands over the suitcases of money to the hotel reception. She then takes a cab to the industrial port to confront Gin and Vodka. It turns out that she was betrayed by the organization and is shot by Gin. Shortly thereafter, Conan appears and learns of her relationship with the "Men in Black". With the last of her strength, she asks him to secure the organization's stolen money.
Relationships with other characters
Shiho Miyano
Shiho, Akemi's younger sister, was her only living relative. Although they lived apart for a while, their relationship was still very close. Shortly before Akemi's death, the two met at a coffee shop and Shiho recounted her visit to the House of Kudos. Akemi then advised her to spend less time on her work and instead find a lover. Akemi's death takes a toll on Shiho and she continues thinking of her. From time to time, she even sees Ran as her deceased sister.
Conan Edogawa
Conan knew Akemi Miyano as a teenager who is in Tokyo looking for her father. Kogoro then found the alleged father, Kenzo Hirota, was hanging dead from the ceiling. Later, Conan found Akemi mortally wounded in the harbor where she later died in Conan's arms.
Only when Ai Haibara talked about her relationship with Akemi, Conan realized the consequences of her death.
Shuichi Akai
She began to develop feelings for Akai. Eventually, he also became close to her sister and gradually rose through the ranks in the organization. When his cover was blown, Akai had to leave the organization and broke off contact with Akemi. She was spared because Shiho was essential to the Organization.
Although Akemi realized that she was only being used by Akai, she couldn't forget him. Two years later, she texted him with a desire to start a real relationship after she left the Organization.
