Aaron Helzinger, also known as Amygdala is a minor antagonist in the TV series Batwoman. He is a mentally-unstable patient of Hamilton Dynamics who is sent to retrieve a sample of the Desert Rose cure from Mary Hamilton.

He was portrayed by RJ Fetherstonhaugh.

History

Early Life

Aaron is a resident of Gotham City who was born with a mental illness which causes him to have spontaneous outbreaks of anger at random times making him extremely unstable. At some point in his life, Helzinger began receiving treatment from the doctors at Hamilton Dynamics who performed secret experiments on him that involved blasting his brain with UV radiation to cure him. The treatments worked, but the radiation caused a tumor to develop near his amygdala, causing him to revert to unpredictable violence again and feel nothing but anger. Helzinger was then put in a holding cell by Dr. Ethan Rogers until a cure for his illness could be found.

Batwoman

Five years later, Helzinger is approached by Dr. Rogers and asks the good doctor if he has found a cure for his tumor and violently attacks Rogers after the latter says no. Helzinger is then subdued by two male nurses and given sedative allowing Rogers to tell Helzinger what he needs him to do.

Mary Hamilton is driving with her father Jacob Kane, when Helzinger rams a truck into their van knocking them unconscious. The two are then held hostage in Mary's secret clinic where Helzinger tries to explain that he knows that Mary is the one who developed the miracle drug that saved dozens of citizens that were infected by Alice's bat poison. He wants Mary to give it to him so that his brain can be healed, but Mary tells Helzinger there is no more antidote causing Helzinger to torture Jacob.

Mary admits that the cure came from a Desert Rose flower that only grows on an island called Coryana and if Helzinger gets to the island he'll have everything he needs to relieve himself of his ailment. She then calls Luke Fox and tells him to bring her the Jack Napier painting that contains a map to the island's remote location. Helzinger has another episode and reveals that Hamilton Dynamics made him this way much to Mary's shock as her late mother, Catherine Hamilton was CEO at the time. Sophie Moore arrives with the map and is knocked out by Helzinger who then proceeds to choke Mary to death after giving into his rage. Jacob escapes his bonds and fights Helzinger until Batwoman shows up and defeats Helzinger after getting discharged with adrenaline from her suit.

Trivia

  • This is the second live-action version of Amygdala, his first being the 2014-2019 TV series Gotham.
  • Unlike most depictions, Amygdala has a full head of hair and his body is not bulky.
