Bob the Goon

She's dating some guy named Wayne.Bob to the Joker.

Robert "Bob" Hawkins, also known as just Bob or Bob the Goon, is the secondary antagonist of Tim Burton's 1989 film Batman, the first installment of Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher's Batman film and comic series.

He is the Joker's right-hand and he was an original character created for the film though he proved to be very popular.

He was portrayed by Tracey Walter.

Biography

Bob was the best friend of Jack Napier long before he had the accident that transformed him into The Joker. Even that change did not affect Bob's loyalty and he stood by his friend as the second-in-command of his criminal empire; rarely speaking, Bob had few lines and usually stayed in the shadows, though he was by far one of the best friends a psycho like the Joker could have.

Bob proved himself to be one of the few henchmen to almost put up a fight with Batman in a scene where he tried to kill Batman with a gun, along with several other goons; however, Batman defeated the thugs, and Bob's bullets had no effect on him (because of Batman wearing bulletproof armor).

Bob met his demise near the end of the film when the Joker said, "Bob, gun." Bob did as he was told and handed him his firearm — only for the Joker to kill him by shooting him in the chest, because he needed someone to take his anger out on after Batman foiled his "gas Gotham City" plan. Of course, it is shown that afterward, the Joker said "I'm gonna need a moment alone, boys" — which implied that the sudden grief he felt for Bob's death replaced his feelings of anger.

Trivia

  • Bob the Goon was an original character created for the film. However, he turned out to be very popular.
  • According to urban legend, Jack Nicholson would not do the film unless he had a right-hand man, and thus Bob the Goon was created.
  • Bob is notably had a similar counterpart in the 2016 Suicide Squad film, Johnny Frost; whom was less close to the Joker and was his trusted enforcer.
  • In the Batman script, Bob was identified as Robert Hawkins. The novelization of Batman confirmed that as Bob's legal name.
  • Originally, Bob was supposed to fight Batman with his bowie knife in the alleyway fight scene. However, producer Jhon Peters was dissatisfied with how that fight turned out, and got Second Unit Director Peter MacDonald to reshoot the scene entirely with martial artist Dave Lea playing Batman. In place of Bob, a new goon with swords was introduced, which was played by Sken Kaewpadung. Though the scene was cut, it was still seen in documentaries and trading cards.
  • In terms of weapons, Bob is interestingly the only character in the film shown to wield or possess a blowback pistol.
