The Butterfly is one of the main antagonists of Nintendo's Ice Climber video game series, marking its sole appearance as a major antagonist of the arcade expansion of Ice Climber, VS. Ice Climber. The Butterfly is the replacement of the Ice Climbers' arch-nemesis, the Condor, after completing eight mountains in a row, and is encountered in the second and more difficult set of mountains in the Bonus Stages. The Butterfly is responsible for stealing their vegetables and spreading them across a variety of several, enormous and glacial mountains.
The Butterfly resembles a realistic butterfly - however, in Ice Climber, Butterflies have a coloration mixture of white, orange and blue. Butterflies have six jointed legs, a pair of antennae and three body parts called a head, thorax (chest), and abdomen (tail end). The four wings and the six legs of a butterfly are attached to its thorax. Special sensors on a butterfly or moths' feet allow the insect to taste their food. Their bodies are divided into three parts: the head, thorax and abdomen. Butterflies have a large eye on both sides of their head and two pairs of wings on the middle part of the body. When an individual touches them, dust-like scales can be felt. They grow in rows and give the wings their special colors.

VS. Ice Climber
The Butterfly makes its sole representative appearance in VS. Ice Climber, the arcade expansion of Ice Climber. If the Ice Climbers complete eight mountains in a row, the player will be transitioned into the second, more difficult and strategic set of mountains with varied colorations on the following levels. In this aspect, the Butterfly will replace the Condor as the main antagonist of the Bonus Stage (where the player can collect the second, more different set of vegetables for extra points), and their roles are the same to each other: either Popo or Nana must grab onto the Butterfly's legs for completion and a massive point-bonus under the limit of 40 seconds.
Personality
Being a silent species, the Butterfly seems to basically fit the characteristics of a standard animal, with it being incapable of traditional speech or expressing sorts of emotions aside from intentionally stealing properties from other individuals. The latter, however, also makes the Butterfly rather irritating, especially for the Ice Climbers. Among the rest of the wildlife in the Ice Climber series, the Butterfly is less of a fighter and more of a coward, retreating from trouble rather than confronting it. This is evident when the Butterfly robs the Ice Climbers' vegetables and flies to another location without having the will to contest its opponents.
However, the Butterfly can occasionally fit the epitome of being a anti-villain or can be a hypocrite, as even when it robs the Ice Climbers' vegetables, it has a tendency of spreading the village's vegetables across various other mountaintops instead of directly eating it, even if the Butterfly has such an appetite. Thus, the Butterfly's victory can be short-lived, as the Ice Climbers will immediately collect the vegetables the duo pass by where the Butterfly spread them in. Regardless, the Butterfly's hobby of stealing the duo's vegetables and performing the same actions rinses and repeats.

Trivia
Despite possessing virtually reminiscent roles in Ice Climber, the Butterfly is not mentioned nor representative in the Super Smash Bros. series, unlike the Condor.
The Butterfly is one of the three enemies from Ice Climber to not make other official appearances nor even return in the Super Smash Bros. series, along with the Bee and Nitpicker.
The Butterfly is one of the four flying enemies in Ice Climber. The rest are considered: the Condor, the Nitpicker and the Bee.
However, the Butterfly and the Condor are considered anti-villains due to fleeing from the Ice Climbers instead of directly opposing them. Additionally, the Butterfly is said to be less wrathful and more pusillanimous in comparison to the Condor, since the latter can oppose in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate by sending them flying via ramming into them.
The Butterfly is the only exclusive antagonist in VS. Ice Climber to not directly threaten Ice Climbers.
