Cody Humphreys is the secondary antagonist of Zeno Mountain Farm's first feature-length film Best Summer Ever. He is an arrogant and temperamental football jock determined to take back his place as star quarterback on Mount Abe High School's football team.
He was played by Jacob Waltuck, who also played Everett in Bulletproof.
Biography
Cody Humphreys was initially star quarterback for Mount Abe High School's football team. However, high school senior Tony Michaels earned that spot with his kicking skills. Since then, Cody has nursed a grudge against Tony.
When Tony and senior captain Dexter Sharpless are interviewed for the upcoming homecoming game, Cody is not impressed. As newcomer Sage enters high school for the first time and meets Nancy, Cody corners and harasses them. Later, he runs up to Beth, the calculating captain of the cheerleading squad, and tells her about the "new girl." He declares his love for Beth, who is determined to take Tony as her homecoming date. Cody grows jealous of Tony for his girlfriend being interested only in Tony.
Tony tells his jock friends about meeting Sage at dance camp and the love they made. After Tony mistakenly shares his picture of Sage with him, Cody, sensing the perfect opportunity to take back his spot, calls for a hall pass. He runs into Beth and tells her of Tony's relationship with Sage. Together, they carry out a plan to put Sage and Tony in their place to secure their power. On Beth's orders, Cody tricks Tony into believing his coach needs him, then steals his cell phone so Beth can use his pictures from dance camp to blackmail him.
Cody grows satisfied when Tony leaves the team to vent his frustrations, hoping to take his spot back. Unfortunately, at the game, he messes up and flies into a rage, yelling at the crowd. In the end, a defeated Cody wallows in his frustrations over his reputation being destroyed, lamenting that he could have done better.
Personality
Cody is arrogant, selfish, and consumed by his jealousy for Tony for taking his spot on the high school football team and Beth trying to make Tony her Homecoming King. He is prone to psychotic outbursts when things don't go his way, which costs him his reputation. Cody is not very bright, as he blindly goes along with Beth's orders because of his love for her. He is also not very kind to girls, especially Sage and Nancy, as he enjoys harassing them.
Trivia
- In early drafts of the script, Cody is kicked out of the football squad for a bad call. He was also going to be more violent and brutal towards the other students.
- In the climax, Cody was initially going to attack Tony, since he was waiting since freshman year to get back at him. He was going to be defeated when Sage knocked him out with a lock Beth puts on her wheelchair to trap her. In the end, Cody was going to be put on duty as the water boy, presumably as punishment for his actions.
- Tony is one of the very few characters not to be featured in the 2016 play that inspired the film.
