Who do you think I am? There are plenty of rookies who are all talk. Just like you, Straw Hat Luffy.Crocodile to Luffy after beating him in their first battle.
Dogs that run away to lick their wounds have no right to speak of justice. That is a rule of this sea. Now, why don't you go back to your Marine headquarters and discuss your justice some more?Crocodile to Tashigi.
Just like old times, huh? Did you miss me?Crocodile meeting Luffy in Impel Down
Sir Crocodile, formerly known as Mr. 0, is a major antagonist in the One Piece franchise and is one of the longest-running major antagonists in the series. Despite his villainous acts, he becomes a major ally during the Impel Down and Marineford Arcs.
He was the president of a crime organization called Baroque Works and is a former member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. After he was defeated by the young rookie, Monkey D. Luffy, he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in Impel Down (a maximum security prison known for being inescapable) Level 6. He was able to escape, however, with the help of Luffy and several other prisoners from Impel Down who offered his assistance to participate in the Marineford war.
Following the events of the war at Marineford, Crocodile began travel to the New World with his right hand man, Daz Bonez. After the dissolution of the Seven Warlords, he later founded a new organization called the Cross Guild, along with his former colleague Dracule Mihawk and formed an alliance with Buggy the Clown, though it is widely believed by the public that Crocodile is under Buggy's leadership.
He has a bounty of 1,965,000,000 berries, having been raised from 81,000,000 berries making him as one of the most wanted criminals, due to his immense strength and twisted intellects. He is also the archenemy of Nefertari Vivi, as he was responsible for the civil war within her hometown, Arabasta in an attempt to usurp the kingdom.
He is voiced by Ryūzaburō Ōtomo in the Japanese version (who also voiced Aaroniero Arruruerie in Bleach, Dabura in Dragon Ball Z, Black Doom in Shadow the Hedgehog, Hell's Chef in Gregory Horror Show and King Cold in Dragon Ball Z Kai), and John Swasey in the English version, who also voiced All For One in My Hero Academia and Hakumen no Mono in Ushio and Tora.
Biography
Not much is revealed about Crocodile's past other than the fact he had witnessed Gol D. Roger's execution, and became a member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea in his early 20's. At another point he fought Whitebeard, one of the Four Emperors, and suffered a heavy loss causing Crocodile to hold a lifelong grudge towards him.
When he was first introduced, Crocodile was planning to use Baroque Works to stage a faux rebellion and conquer the desert kingdom of Arabasta. His true motive for doing this was to gain access to the poneglyph, special hieroglyphs, that lead to the location of Pluton, a powerful battleship said to have enough power to conquer the world. However, he was betrayed by his former partner, Nico Robin, and was defeated by Luffy. As a result of this secret plan being revealed to the public, the World Government stripped him of his title and sent him to Impel Down Level 6 (the lowest floor reserved for the world's worst of the worst criminals).
Later on, when Luffy broke into Impel Down to rescue his brother, Portgas D. Ace, he ran into Crocodile, and while he was still angry at him for what he had done, Luffy let him go after Emporio Ivankov insisted. However, to ensure Crocodile wouldn’t suddenly betray the party, Ivankov threatened to reveal a secret Crocodile doesn’t want to get out. Crocodile helped Luffy and the others escape from Impel Down but Crocodile only agreed to do this because he wanted to kill Whitebeard. However, during the war he lost interest in killing Whitebeard and even saved Luffy and Jinbe from Akainu to ensure the World Government would not have their way. After the war, Crocodile and Mr.1 planned on traveling to the New World.
Crocodile appears when he sees the news of Luffy and Law's alliance. He reads of Totto Land incident. After the Seven Warlords disavowed due to his and Donquixote Doflamingo's actions, Crocodile contacted his former colleague, Dracule Mihawk (who intend to leave his island and relocate) respecting the latter enough for being called a "Marine Hunter" in the past and offered Hawkeye to join him as his business partner since they are widely to be the people who are distrustful towards others. Mihawk is convinced and accepted to become Crocodile's partner only for Mihawk wanting to be in peace. He and Mihawk teamed up and created Cross Guild (a Marine hunting organization). After defeating Vice-Admiral Stainless and his fleet, he and Mihawk also formed an alliance with Buggy the Clown. However, they eventually beaten Buggy up because of Buggy's mistakes of being the leader of Cross Guild and an Emperor. Crocodile agreed to Mihawk to let Buggy live as a fake figurehead and while he and Mihawk will run operations in the shadows to avoid any unwanted attentions, when they can always dispose of Buggy at anytime if the need arise.
Despite letting Buggy to benefit both him and Hawkeye, Crocodile and Mihawk are shown disapproval of Cross Guild's ship and taken Buggy to the torture room where they brutalized him even further out of their disgust of the new ship's tasteless design. Crocodile discussing to Mihawk about their actions to the Marines just as they've planned. But in order to form their utopia and a strong military force, they must established their overwhelming strength (which Mihawk perceived it). Buggy tries to convince them to go after One Piece and defeat the 3 of the Four Emperors. However, Crocodile and Mihawk find Buggy to be extremely delusional as they refused to oblige as they have no interest to fight Luffy, Shanks or Blackbeard. But, Buggy crossed both Crocodile and Mihawk by using a Den-Den Mushi and announcing to set sail in their quest for One Piece, much of Crocodile and Mihawk's rage towards the Clown.
Crocodile witnessed Vegapunk's message broadcast and learned the truth of both the World Government and the ancient weapons. Crocodile and Mihawk are still annoyed about Buggy despite he knows the truth about the World Government. Croocilde sternly ordered Buggy to sit down.
Appearance
Crocodile is a tall man with a large chest, broad shoulders, muscular arms and legs, and a thick neck. He has faded skin and nape-length black hair, which is kept neatly slicked back, although strands tend to fall in front of his face for the duration of battles. Crocodile has various battle wounds, most incredibly a long-stitched scar at the bridge of his nose that stretches across his face and a massive hook made from a tough gold alloy in place of his left hand. His eyes are deep-set and heavy-lidded, and his skinny eyebrows are characteristically drawn upward in the middle. This gives his ordinary facial expression a feeling of condescension and distrust. Crocodile speaks with a deep, relaxed voice, and he is usually viewed smoking a thick cigar produced by his company. In the anime, his skin is truly of a grayish color.
His outfit theme is meant to convey the image of an Italian mafia boss. In his unique appearance, Crocodile wore a bright orange, black-striped button-up vest over a long-sleeve peach shirt, a blue scarf, dark brown suit pants, and polished black footwear with gold buckles. He wore a long, thick, dark-pelted fur coat over his shoulders. In Impel Down, Crocodile wore a horizonal stripe prisoner outfit. He later wore an outfit similar to his original outfit, he wore a black suit, black vest, black pelted fur coat, gray suit pants and green tie. After timeskip, he retained his black outfit (from the Summit War Saga). In the Final Saga, Crocodile wore a new suit similar to his Arabasta outfit such as a white shirt, a purple diamond-shape stripped vest, black pants, orange scarf and a black fur coat (resembles to the Summit War Saga).
In all his appearances, he wears a single gold hoop earring in his right ear, and he usually has several golden rings with different colored gemstones on every finger except the ring finger, for motives unknown (in the anime version of the Arabasta Arc, it was his middle finger that was once bare. This has since been corrected in recent arcs).
Personality
Weakness is a sin.Crocodile.
Crocodile presented himself as a sophisticated businessmen with great pride and confidence, both in his influence and actual power. During his time as a Warlord, Crocodile was seen by the public as a hero of sorts, particularly in Arabasta where he would help the citizens stop criminals and pirates from doing harm. In reality, this was merely a façade on his part as part of his plan of obtaining Pluton.
Crocodile is in fact a sadistic individual that takes delight in making his enemies suffer in multitude of ways, including drowning them in sand or feeding them to his pet crocodiles. Crocodile valued military might above all else and that it was the only thing that mattered most to him. He believed that the goals and dreams that one may have to becoming the Pirate King meant nothing and would inevitably lead them to their demise. Likewise, Crocodile had no interest in pursuing any further goals in the New World and was contempt with his domination over Arabasta. Crocodile hold a complete distrust towards others.
Due to his egotism, he has no tolerance for weaknesses or cowardice as he deemed Mr. 3 as a useless piece of trash and was willing to have him be killed. He also highly disliked those that would insult him leading him to outright killing them. However, for this very reason, he comes off being extremely arrogant and often lets it get the better of him, which would ultimately lead to his downfall against Luffy. Even after he was freed from Impel Down, Crocodile retained his intolerance for weaknesses and cowardice as shown he look down Buggy for being weak, cowardice, pathetic and lowly pirate when seeing him as a joke despite he is aware of Buggy being a member of the Roger Pirates.
Following his imprisonment, Crocodile appears to have mellowed out, somewhat. He has lost interest in seeking to obtain Pluton or greater power of any sorts and is more contempt to remain in prison, even when his former henchmen were willing to help him escape. He lost all interests on Arabasta. While most of the prisoners in Impel Down appeared to be miserable, Crocodile seemed to be the only one that was enjoying his time there. During his time, he appeared to have develop a soft side for his right hand man, Daz Bonez AKA Mr. 1, who he would later offer him to join him to the New World, which he obliges without any hesitation for his fiercely loyalty towards Crocodile.
It isn't until he encounters Luffy once more in Impel Down where he decides to leave Impel Down for good, but for his own personal reasons. As he learned that Whitebeard would take part in the battle against the Marines, Crocodile looked forward to the opportunity of taking his head. However, at the same time, he was willing to put this goal aside and aid Luffy against the Marines, including saving him from both Mihawk and later Akainu. He even went as far as to help the Whitebeard Pirates save Portgas D. Ace from his execution, though he insisted this was because he did not want the Marines to feel victorious in any way.
Opposed to most of the antagonists, he doesn't seem to hold grudges nor blame anyone else but himself for his failures, thus showing that he at least holds himself to his own standards, rather than trying to argue his underlings failed to stop Luffy or that Luffy had some unfair advantage; during the fight against Luffy, he declared that there is no such thing as "fairness" in a pirate battle, and as such accepted his loss. He briefly considered vengeance when Luffy led the Impel Down jailbreak, yet he ultimately dismissed it as a waste of time, thus showing he could be reasonable despite his brutality and prior cruelty.
When he managed to escape from the Marines entirely, he was very eager to be travelling in the New World once more, showing signs that Luffy may have in fact inspired him since the ambitions he had once ridiculed and given up on are now dreams he wishes to accomplish. More evidence of him being inspired by Luffy is that he learned the value of treating allies like equals, rather than subordinates, which is how he convinced Dracule Mihawk to join him into creating the Cross Guild.
After founding Cross Guild, Crocodile takes his business very seriously when he has no interest of claiming the heads of Luffy, Shanks or Blackbeard when he considered Buggy's intentions of overthrowing the 3 of the Four Emperors just for the One Piece treasure to be very delusional. Crocodile declared pirating is business. He viewed Buggy to be nothing more than a lowly pirate who is a very deluded and ignorant weakling when the Clown doesn't know how to devise a plan. Like Mihawk, Crocodile somewhat respects Luffy and considered his newly title as one of the Four Emperors to be generally well earned for defeating and usurping Kaido unlike Buggy (who Crocodile always viewed him to be worthless, pathetic, cowardly and weak).
Powers and Abilities
I've worked hard to develop my Devil Fruit powers. I can use them to make any weapon I want... unlike some fools who are satisfied with their powers as they are. I continually condition myself and improve my skills!Crocodile boasting about the proficiency of his powers to Luffy during their first battle.
Crocodile ate the Sand-Sand Fruit (Suna Suna no Mi) a Logia type devil fruit, and is able to turn his body into sand as a result. Not only that, but he can also manipulate sand around him to create sandstorms or fissures, as well as extract the moisture from people and objects, turning them into sand. This is accomplished by touching the object or person with his remaining hand. Like other wielders of the Devil Fruit, he cannot swim and loses his powers when immersed in water or comes into contact with Seastone, but another unique weakness is that he loses his ability to turn into sand when he is soaked in water or is touched by something soaked in water. The same also applies to other fluids as they solidify the sand (i.e., Luffy was able to fight Crocodile using his own blood). According to Emporio Ivankov, Crocodile also have a precious weakness when the Revolutionary commander is willing to reveal it if Crocodile choose to betray him and Luffy.
Physically, Crocodile is immensely strong as he is able to easily deflect Dracule Mihawk's sword, the former is considered to the world's greatest swordsman. He can take considerable punishment from Luffy during their fight, the latter was able to exploit his Devil Fruit's primary weakness or an attack from Diamond Jozu despite being imbued with Haki. Crocodile can effortlessly destroy Marine battleships headed to Buggy. Another impressive feat of his physical attribute is that during his imprisonment at Impel Down, not even Level 3 or 4's extreme heat dazed the former Warlord or Level 5's subzero temperature.
Perhaps the greatest strength of Crocodile lies within his intelligence. He is a cunning mastermind with an analytical knowledge in fulfilling his goals. His ability to lead the Baroque Works in shadows beyond the reach of the World Government's prying eyes is a testament to this. Crocodile secretly led the Baroque Works for years into planning his attempted utopia by taking over Arabasta. Apart from his genius-level intelligence, Crocodile is a skilled con artist and manipulator, allowing him to fool Luffy by creating a sandstorm to catch him off-guard or deceive the public into believing he is a "hero" of Arabasta by defeating invaders.
After timeskip, Crocodile became stronger than he was before. He easily destroyed Vice-Admiral Stainless' fleet (who were coming after Buggy). This is especially noteworthy when he partnered himself with Dracule Mihawk, who is also known as the Strongest Swordsman in the World which he fought fairly during the Summit War.
Being a proficient hand-to-hand combatant, Crocodile also has a large hook made of a hard gold alloy, which he can use to slash and stab opponents. The golden part of his hook can be taken off to reveal a poisonous hook underneath. Should that hook break off, he also has a knife concealed underneath the hook. Aside from his aforementioned abilities, Crocodile is also capable of using Observation and Armament Haki, although he is yet to be shown using it. It appears that he is more reliant on his Devil Fruit abilities.

Trivia
- Crocodile was originally designed to be the main antagonist of One Piece, before growing interest in the series prompted the writers to expand the overall plot.
- Also, Crocodile was designed as an arch-enemy and villainous counterpart to Luffy; both characters started with similar dreams, and both suffered soul-crushing defeats in pursuit of them. But while Luffy steadfastly continued to pursue his goals, Crocodile abandoned them, believing dreams, hopes, and faith in others are worthless qualities, and only sheer power mattered.
- Both are vaguely visually similar to the animals of their namesake
- Both have prominent facial scars
- Both were allied with Nico Robin. Although, for Crocodile, she went under the name of Miss All-Sunday and was doing it reluctantly due to the protection his Warlord status would provide, whereas she used her real name and is a completely committed Straw Hat crewmate for Luffy.
- Both have right-hand men who use an abnormal number of bladed weapons, with Daz Bonez using his body with a Devil Fruit Power, and Roronoa Zoro using three swords, respectively.
- Crocodile almost destroyed the Kingdom of Alabasta, whereas Luffy saved it, and would go on to save other kingdoms including Fishmen Island, Dressrosa, and Wano.
- He was the first Warlord of the Sea presented as an antagonist.
- He is the only two of the original Shichibukai to possess a Logia Devil Fruit (besides Blackbeard). He was also the first villain on the show with a Logia (unless one considers Smoker a villain).
- So far, Crocodile has defeated Luffy many times than any other canon-antagonist (only surpassed by Kaido who defeated Luffy four times), defeating him on two different occasions and nearly defeated him a third time. A record rivaled only by non-canon villains Byrnndi World from the 2Y Anime Special and Former Marine Admiral Zephyr from the One Piece Movie: Z, who defeated Luffy twice and three times respectively. Both of those characters have died however, while Crocodile was still alive before the time skip in the series and is presumed to be alive after.
- He was also the first main antagonist to thoroughly defeat Luffy at all, since Luffy was merely delayed when Arlong tossed a boulder he was stuck in into the ocean, delayed by Krieg's poison bullets, and he knocked himself out with the head peace of Kuro's ship.
- He seems to be a reference to Captain Hook, a pirate villain who lost his hand to a crocodile, later replacing it with a hook. In Crocodile's case, however, he uses crocodiles as trained attack beasts, and how he lost his hand has yet to be explained.
- His signature laugh is Kuhahahaha.
