Hoby Callender is a villain in Jonah Hex, serving as the main villain of Iron Dog's Gold!
Overview
Hoby is introduced murdering Cree chief Iron Dog for refusing to give him a map leading to a canyon of Cree treasure. He finds Jonah Hex and takes him prisoner, but not without Jonah breaking the arm of one of Hoby's men (whereupon Hoby shoots the man dead).
Hoby follows a blind old man and his grandson under the promise of splitting the treasure 50/50. However, he and his gang are chased by a Cree aggressor, and to save his own skin, Hoby cuts the ropes holding a bridge up, and his men (who are still on the bridge) plummet to their deaths.
When they reach the canyon, Hoby goes back on his terms and murders the blind man, and does the same to the man's grandson when the latter reacts in horror. After that, he tries to kill Jonah to make off with the gold. A sudden avalanche causes Hoby to flee, but before he can make it far, he is shot and killed by the blind man's grandson (who is not quite dead yet).
Personality
Hoby is a selfish man who cares only about gold and is not above killing his own men for any given reason. He also has a habit of betraying everyone with whom he works.
