House Corrino are the overarching antagonists of the 1965 novel Dune, as well as its film and miniseries adaptations.
They asserted their dominance over the Imperium through the control of the strongest army in the known universe, the Sardaukar. They enter an alliance with House Harkonnen to have them eliminate House Atreides so their own power can be solidified.
History
While House Corrino was once the most powerful House in the known universe, years of complacency gave rise to other Houses that began to amass comparable amounts of power. Fearing House Atreides as a potential rival to his own, the head of House Corrino, Emperor Shaddam IV, reluctantly entered an alliance with House Harkonnen to eliminate them. The Emperor temporarily handed the domain of Arrakis from House Harkonnen to House Atreides, before giving the Harkonnens the backing to conduct an invasion of the planet and oust House Atreides from power. In the process, the House's head, Leto Atreides I, was killed, and his surviving family was forced to flee out into the desert, where they sought refuge with the Fremen.
