I'm certain that Eldians are the descendants of devils. And I'm certain... that we too are devils.Theo Magath referring to himself and Willy Tybur, as well as reflecting on Marley's status in the world.
Marley, oppressed more than any other by those devils... then used them to oppress other nations... only repeating the tragedies of the past.Willy Tybur points out modern Marley's hypocrisy.
We exploited hatred. We kept feeding our resentment. We even thought our hate would save us... We dumped every problem caused by our shortcomings onto an 'island of devils'. And the result... was the birth of that monster... which has now come to return our hatred upon our own heads. ...If it's possible... for us to have a future again... I will not make the same mistakes... I swear it. If we see... another tomorrow...Muller's regretful speech to the Marleyan military about the misdeeds of their nation.
Marley, also known by its inhabitants as the Motherland, are the main antagonists of the Attack on Titan franchise.
It is a sovereign imperialistic nation and continental mainland in the Attack on Titan universe. Its system of government is a military dictatorship, and its national language is Eldian. Following the Raid on Liberio, Marley becomes the leading member nation of the Global Alliance, a federation of countries rallying together to eliminate Eldia.
Having once been slaves and victims to the Eldian Empire, with no ways of fighting back due to the power of the Titans, Marley eventually broke free by initiating the Great Titan War in which they managed to obtain seven of the Nine Titans from Eldia. The 145th Eldian King - who felt that Marley was in the right due to the cruel ways they were treated by the Eldians - did not interfere and instead brought as many of his people as he could to Paradis Island, where he planned to keep them within walls made of Titans until Marley would decide to annihilate them all. After defeating Eldia, Marley was able to become the dominant power of the entire continent. They also swiftly rounded up all the Eldians in their territory and secluded them in ghettos, the internment zones, treating them as second class citizens. The rest of the world followed the same policy to deal with the Eldians, instead of exterminating them.
The Marleyans however ended up becoming just as bad as their former oppressor, becoming an expansionist state with colonial policies and utilizing six of their seven Titans as war weapons in order to become the world's major superpower. With the power of the Titans possessed by the Marleyan Warrior Unit, Marley invaded various neighboring countries, colonizing and annexing them into the nation. By the time of the main series Marley rules the entire continent as a large colonial empire. Marley and the majority of the world view the Eldians as nothing but devils. Despite the fact Marley is widely hated by the rest of the world, they are seen as a lesser evil than the Eldians. Also, in Marley some citizens referred to refugees from Mid-Eastern nations as "aliens", displaying hostility and xenophobic behavior towards other cultures and rival nations. Despite having issues of unity and mutual discriminations, Marley is a multi-ethnic nation, focusing on wiping out other nations and making their conquered citizens into Marleyans.
History
Background
Around 2,000 years ago, a girl named Ymir gained the power of the Titans, becoming the first Titan to ever walk the earth. Seeing her potential, the leader of the Eldian tribe, King Fritz, used her to build bridges across mountains, cultivate barren lands and build roads. Pleased with the progress that his people were making because of Ymir, the Eldian ruler "rewarded" her by forcing her to bear his children, named Maria, Rose and Sheena. He also ordered her that, in his name, he should crush the nation of Marley with her massive Titan form. 13 years of war between Marley and Eldia caused the utter submission of the former and the rise to power of the latter. As a group of Marleyan soldiers were bowing before King Fritz, one man suddenly drew a spear with the intent to end the infamous Eldian King who brought so much destruction and terror to their nation. Ymir, however, willingly put herself in the spear's way and saved the tyrant's life. This would cost Marley dearly, as it resulted in Maria, Rose and Sheena inheriting her mother's power, which resulted in turn in the creation of the Coordinate and, eventually, the Nine Titans who would terrorize the world of centuries to come.
Ymir's story is slandered in Marleyan legends. Some time after her death, Ymir's existence was hailed as a God-given miracle. Some would claim that as the Founding Titan, she used her Titan power to cultivate barren lands, build roads across the lands, and raise bridges through the mountains of the world, overall bringing great changes to the Eldian Empire, though these claims could never be supported. On the other hand, after the fall of the Eldian Empire in the Great Titan War, Marleyan tales would instead claim that Ymir's power was derived from the "Devil of All Earth". All Titans originate from the Subjects of Ymir. Every single Titan was a human being who descends from the Founder Ymir, who can become a Titan if injected with a particular serum.
The Marleyans have been dominated by Ymir's people and according to Marley's historical accounts, they were also eaten by them. Over a century before the Fall of Wall Maria, the 145th King of Eldia, Karl Fritz, inherited the power of the Founding Titan. During his lifetime, eight houses led by the eight of the Nine Titans subservient to the Fritz family were constantly at war with each other. Rather than following the method of his predecessors and using the Founding Titan to maintain order in the nation of Eldia, King Fritz chose instead to move the capital of Eldia to a remote island, later known as Paradis Island, to the east of the mainland of their nation. In the King's absence and with the aid of the Tybur family, the oppressed society descending from Marley instigated the Great Titan War in Eldia, taking control of seven out of the Nine Titans and rising up against their oppressors.
As in the other nations of the world, the Eldians who were born in Marley are treated lowly: they live in the ghettos known as internment camps as second class citizens and are used as soldiers for wars and suicide missions. Zeke Yeager is one of these soldiers and doesn't share the views of his father Grisha Yeager and his mother Dina Fritz, who were Eldian Restorationists who rebelled against the Marleyan government. Such group was born from the hateful cruelty of the world, such as the abuse of power of the Marleyan soldiers of Public Security, whose actions weren't controlled by the government and also provoked the leaders (Eren Kruger and Grisha) by burning alive Kruger's family in front of him and sadistically murdering Grisha's little sister, Faye Yeager, by having her mauled by hounds. The Public Security Authorities eventually discovered the rebel organization of the Eldian Restorationists and punished them by deporting them to Paradis Island and injecting them with Titan serum, including Dina.
War in the South and Plan to regain the Founder
At the closing of the Great Titan War, King Karl Fritz had made a Vow Renouncing War, promising to keep his subjects trapped until Marley or any other nations would have wanted to strike in retaliation for the Eldian Empire's sins. He also vowed not to take part in the history of the outside world. However, the Marleyan government informed its citizen that King Fritz had made the ultimatum that if Marley made any move against the remnants of Eldia, the Founding Titan would be used to unleash the countless Colossus Titans which made up the three Walls surrounding Eldia's last territory. However, once Marley decided to make its move on Paradis Island a century later, they did not know whether the then-current King of the Walls had the same ideas as Fritz. So, in order to prevent potential disaster, the Marleyan Military used soldiers of the nations' Warrior program, in which low-class Eldian citizens within Marley would offer their children between the ages of 5 and 7 to the Marleyan military, where they would train until six would be chosen to inherit the six of the seven Titans in Marley's possession.
Marley's original real goal was to regain the Founding Titan and remain the most powerful nation in the world, using Titans to control it. This ended years later when it eventually becomes clear that humanity is going to surpass the Titans as the world's strongest species, as modern technology progresses. As Marley kept fighting wars of conquest against other nations and their allies, a group of Intelligent Titans of the Marleyan military's Warrior Unit was sent to Paradis Island to recover the Coordinate (Founding Titan) from the Fritz royal family, if necessary even eradicate all the Eldians who lived inside the island's Walls, and bring the Fritz member with the Coordinate to Marley (or devour them, if bringing them back to the mainland was not possible). As of Marley's decision to move against Paradis to secure its vast fossil resource, the PSA are also tasked with recruiting Warriors from among the Eldian children aged 5–7 in service of the Marley government with the promise of designating the Eldian families of the chosen children as honorary Marleyans. Zeke Yeager, Bertolt Hoover, Reiner Braun, Annie Leonhart, Marcel and Porco Galliard, and Pieck Finger are known to be among those chosen children, and were also chosen to inherit the six Titans. The Warrior candidates were subjected to pro-Marleyan indoctrination as part of their training. Meanwhile, Grisha had inherited Eren Kruger's Attack Titan and managed to reach the Walls in Paradis Island, where he made a new life and married an Eldian woman Carla from whom he had another son, Eren, who shares his first name with the deceased Kruger.
While the Warrior candidates were still in training, Marley was at war with one or more enemy nations in the south. In 843, the new Warriors joined the war, fighting in its battles. This generation of Titan soldiers became praised as the best one the military ever had. During the final battles between Marley and an enemy nation in the south, Commander Magath admitted that they were more effective than their predecessors, but he remained skeptical of how useful children would be for the upcoming Paradis Island Operation. He criticized the top brass in power's decision to entrust the whole delicate matter to mere children and called them insane. The Warriors managed to wipe out an enemy nation from the map, being annexed into Marley.
Being taught that killing both soldiers and civilians was fine as long as they were not Marleyans, and that it would atone for the past atrocities of Eldia, the Warriors won the rest of the war's battles for the Marleyan military. The Colossal Titan was used as nukes to destroy cities and military bases. Around 844, the Marleyan army successfully conquered an enemy nation's capital by using Zeke's spinal fluid on an Eldian force, turning all its people into Titans in the city's streets, killing countless civilians and combatants alike in the surprise attack. They were able to do so even in the night, so long as the full moon was out, something not possible with regular Pure Titans not affected by Zeke's spinal fluid. Returning to Marley from their battles, the Warrior Unit was praised by the Marleyan Eldians as heroes.
Out of the seven chosen new Warriors, Zeke, the successor of Tom Ksaver, was chosen to become the War Chief, likely due to his older age. Annie, in particular, faced grueling combat training in her early childhood in preparation for the program, supervised by her father. However, before she departed on her mission, her father gave her his heartfelt apologies, assuring her that even if the world came to hate her, she would still have her father by her side. All that he asked of her is that she would promise to return home.
Paradis Island Operation
In the year 845, Marley and Commander Theo Magath sent four Warriors to the Walls, with the mission of reclaiming the Founding Titan from the Reiss family and putting an end to the cursed history of Eldia. The child soldiers were Bertolt Hoover, the Colossus Titan who would destroy the outer gate of Shiganshina District; Reiner Braun, the Armored Titan who would destroy the inner gate; Annie Leonhart, the Female Titan who presumably called forth the Titans who would invade Wall Maria; and Marcel Galliard who was given leadership of the group and whose Jaw Titan form was meant to support Annie in carrying the team to the Walls.
However, before Marcel could reach the Wall, a Pure Titan attacked Reiner. Marcel sacrificed himself to save the others, being consumed by the Titan. As the other Warriors fled, this Titan inherited Marcel's Jaw Titan and returned to her human form, Ymir, a homeless girl from a Marleyan ghetto with a name to great for her to bare.
When they arrived at Shiganshina District, the Warriors succeeded in breaching both gates and sending the Pure Titans swarming into Eldia's territory. Reiner Braun and Bertolt Hoover were to lead the genocide by kicking the Walls to let Pure Titans in. This group of soldiers was dysfunctional and their poor planning led to their failures: Marcel died as a kid before even reaching the destination, Annie started to get sympathetic towards Eldians, Reiner developed identity crisis, and Bertolt remained fully focused on his mission.
Two years after their successful attack on Wall Maria, in the year 847, the Warrior spies entered the 104th Training Corps in the hopes to achieve the highest ranks possible and entering into the Military Police Brigade, giving them easy access to the Interior, and by extent the unidentified royal family in hiding, the holders of the Founding Titan. Three years later, Reiner, Bertolt, and Annie succeeded in earning ranks within the top ten of their Training Corps.
After receiving their desired ranks in the 104th Training Corps, the Warriors proceed with their mission on the day before their scheduled graduation. In the year 850, Bertolt Hoover attacks again and successfully breaches the outer gate of Trost District. However, the Warriors bring their mission to a halt when they discover a Titan who is openly fighting other Titans, later revealed to be Eren Yeager with a newfound form of the Nine Titans. With this unexpected turn of events, the Warriors begin to suspect that Eren might have somehow inherited the Coordinate, as only two forms of the Nine are not under Marley's control, while the Jaw Titan is still missing. They halt their plans, and the inner gate is never attacked by Reiner. However, Bertolt and Reiner are caught by the Eldian cadet soldier Marco Bodt, but before he could act they got rid of him, using Annie to let him die at the hands of a Pure Titan.
When the time comes for choosing a military branch, Bertolt and Reiner change their plans of joining the Military Police and instead join the Survey Corps, Eren's chosen branch. Annie Leonhart proceeds with Reiner's original decision to join the MP in Wall Sina. However, when the Survey Corps embarks on the 57th expedition beyond the Walls a month later, Annie is dispactehd by Reiner to attack the expedition as the Female Titan in order to locate and capture Eren, in order to finally return to Liberio. With the help of Reiner she nearly succeeds and manages to wipe out the Special Operations Squad, but is foiled by Mikasa Ackerman and Captain Levi Ackerman. Because she spared Armin Arlert in the attack on the expedition, she is found out to be the Female Titan. A few days after the expedition, Annie battles with Eren in Stohess District and is ultimately caught by the Survey Corps. However, she uses her specialized hardening abilities to conceal herself in an ultra-hard layer of crystallized skin, preventing interrogation. Annie's comatose body is kept in the custody of the Survey Corps, by permission of the local authorities.
On the same day as the battle within Stohess District, another Titan invasion within the Walls takes place. Warchief Zeke Yeager, captain of the Warrior Unit, is sent by the Marleyan Military to commence a test small-scale invasion Wall Rose, accompanied by a small contingent of soldiers including Pieck Finger and non-Eldian gas weaponry soldiers. They turn the inhabitants of Ragako village into Pure Titans fully controled by Zeke, in order to test Eldia's strength, before leaving Wall Rose later that night. During the ensuing efforts of the Survey Corps and Garrison to deal with the invasion, the Survey Corps receives family records from the chaos of five years ago and begin to suspect that Reiner and Bertolt were in league with Annie.
A day after the Titan invasion from Ragako, Reiner and Bertolt are indeed discovered to be the Armored and Colossus Titans. Throwing all secrecy away, Reiner and Bertolt battle with the Survey Corps and capture Eren and Ymir, the latter whom they learned earlier was the Pure Titan that ate Marcel, so now holds the Jaw Titan. Over five hours later, a combined effort of all three Eldian military regiments embarks on a rescue operation, and Eren is retrieved. In this battle, Eren seemingly unleashes the power of the Coordinate upon Reiner and Bertolt, confirming their worst fears that he has the power that can start the Rumbling against humanity. The Warriors flee with Ymir to Shiganshina District to recover and formulate a new plan. Ymir volunteers to return to Marley with them and is later taken prisoner by the military, who brought her back to Liberio and executed her by being eaten by Marcel's brother, Porco Galliard, who inherits the Jaw Titan's power.
Two months later, Zeke and Pieck join Reiner and Bertolt in their mission to reclaim the Founder and destroy the Survey Corps. Bertolt and Reiner express their desire to save Annie from the Survey Corps, but Zeke prioritizes the retrieval of the Coordinate. They lie in waiting in Shiganshina District for the Survey Corps to arrive to seal the destroyed gates and search Eren's basement, which is believed to hold secrets of the Titans and perhaps even the world. When the Survey Corps arrives, a battle ensues between the soldiers and Zeke's Warriors and Pure Titans from Marley. The Corps, numbering in over one hundred at the start of the battle, loses nearly all of its soldiers in the attack, though they succeed in defeating Zeke, Reiner and Bertolt. However, Pieck, using her Cart Titan, saves Zeke from Levi. Using Pieck as a mount, Zeke is also able to rescue Reiner from Hange Zoe and escape from the battle, leaving Bertolt at the mercy of the Survey Corps. Shortly thereafter, Bertolt is eaten alive by Armin Arlert's Pure Titan, after being administered the Titan serum, signaling the loss of the Colossus Titan. This is the operation's final battle against the Walls of Paradis. After that, the Marleyan government is forced to halt the operation in order to focus on global rivalries against other nations.
During the years in which the Paradis Island Operation was taking place, the Marleyan military was training the next generation of Warriors. Best candidates included Colt Grice, who became the chosen successor of the Beast Titan, and four candidates to inherit the Armored Titan: Gabi Braun, Falco Grice, Udo, and Zofia. Gabi is the most favored one to receive the Titan. Many other children are also shown training to become soldiers to serve Marley.
War against the Mid-East Allied Forces
A coalition between multiple nations known as the Mid-East Allied Forces began a war for resources against Marley's colonial empire. During the last 4 years, the remainder of the eradicated Survey Corps started exploring the world outside the Walls, liberated the entire island from the Titans, and found the ocean. Meanwhile, the table started to turn between Marley and other rival nations, the former losing half of their navy against the naval forces of the Mid-East Union. Furthermore, 32 Marleyan scouting ships sent to Paradis Island, including destroyers, have been captured or destroyed by Eren and Armin's Titans, and approximately 4,600 Marleyan soldiers become prisoners of war within the Walls. Now free from the royal Reiss tyranny of the Walls, Paradis started developing its technology with the aid of deserters from the Marleyan military calling themselves Anti-Marleyan Volunteers.
The defeats of Bertolt Hoover and Annie Leonhart signed the beginning of the end of the dominion of the Titans in Earth and a huge crisis for the Marleyans. Ever since the great failure, other multiple enemy nations of Marley rose in attack and declared war: the Mid-East Allied Forces. They are generally equal to Marley in terms of military technology, but are superior in some instances, taking advantage of their enemy's weakened military capabilities and declared war on Marley. Over the course of four years, the Mid-East Allied Forces gradually lost their advantage against the enemy, losing control of the seas by the time of the battle of Fort Slava. The Allies' navy, however, as mentioned before, dealt significant damage to the Marley navy in their naval battles.
At some point before or during the war, the Mid-East Allied Forces developed anti-Titan artillery, heavy cannons designed to kill any Titan in a single shot, even one of the Nine Titans.
After four years of war, the Mid-East Allies make a final stand at Fort Slava, a fortress equipped with heavy machine gun defenses and anti-Titan artillery overlooking their last naval station. Commander Theo Magath of the Marleyan military, leader of the Eldian Unit and its Warriors, leads a trench siege against the fort alongside a force of numerous Marleyan and Eldian soldiers. This includes 800 soldiers of the Eldian Unit and both senior and junior members of the Warrior Unit. The holders of the Nine Titans are kept on standby, as Magath does not dare to risk sending them out to attack Fort Slava's trench due to the anti-Titan defenses implemented by the Allies. However, when Warrior candidate Gabi Braun single-handedly destroys the armored train carrying artillery around the fort, the Allied soldiers are attacked by the Jaw Titan of Porco Galliard. The rest of the battle continues with the Eldian Unit's soldiers fighting on the frontlines to give cover to most the Marleyan soldiers. Pieck's Cart Titan and her Marleyan comrades of the Panzer Unit also join the assault, eventually destroying the enemy's outside defenses, allowing for the Airborne Unit to launch a Titan bombardment via airship from the sky on Fort Slava. After the bombardment, Reiner's Armored Titan joins the assault, conquering For Slava and allowing for Zeke's Beast Titan to join. Then Zeke uses shells to annihilate the remaining naval fleet of the Mid-East Allied Forces, located in the port of a town below the fort. This signifies the end of the war and a peace treaty between Marley and the Allied nations is signed. The disputed territories are colonized by Marley and the new military technology is acquired.
Intervention of the Tybur Family and Declaration of War
Despite the long war being won, Marley realizes that the age of the Titans has come to an end. Zeke Yeager manages to convince General Calvi to resume open hostilities against Paradis Island, in order to retrieve the Founding Titan and use it as a deterrant against potential enemy nations threatening Marley's global supremacy. This will give the military time to completely restructure and focus on developing superior conventional weapons, explosives, naval power and aircraft, as the power of the Titans will become obsolete.
The Tybur family—an Eldian family that joined Marley early during the rebellion and was awarded full status of Marleyan citizens—joins the plans of the government and instead of letting Marley attack Paradis on its own again, they devise a different plan with the objective of reforming Marley in the eyes of the world. Using the world's united hatred against Eldians, the Tyburs invite all VIPS from across the globe, such as envoys and ambassadors, including reporters, from all the major countries to Liberio, in order to convince them to join Marley in attacking Paradis and extinguishing the threat of Eldia and the Rumbling once and for all. The Tyburs promise to have their War Hammer Titan join the military and its Warrior Unit in their effort to allegedly save the world. Willy Tybur, patriarch of the Tybur family, arrives to Liberio and allies himself with Commander Theo Magath to change the nation of Marley, end its self-destructive imperialism, and make it a nation of heroes for the world once again, thus uniting the globe from its difference and mutual tensions and instabilities by all having a common enemy. Tybur and Magath work in secret to arrange plans of "home expansion." Furthermore, Willy entrusts the nation of Marley in Magath's hands. Magath spends the following days judging his superiors, fellow commanders and leaders in silence during military and party meetings.
One month later, Magath attends a meeting with his Warriors at headquarters, discussing potential Paradis Island invasion strategies and tactics with other superior officers. Despite the Vice Chief Reiner's shared knowledge of the Walls and its people, the strategists are unable to come up with decent war plans, actually wanting Reiner to devise them himself instead of doing their jobs. And when Reiner argues that he is merely trying to share his knowledge to his superiors, they mockingly claim that Eldians are not even able to carry out a conversation, as they try to hide their inability to do their jobs. The meeting does not end well, and nothing is achieved. The display of incompetence from the group of military strategists charged with the war plans on how to even start the island's invasion - and whether invading it with the Marleyan fleet from the wharf in the south or north where the Eldian military is less focused on - prompts Magath to decide that the whole top brass and very heart of the military hierarchy has decayed beyond repair and needs to be completely wiped out.
Later that day, Magath meets with Lord Tybur at the Liberio internment zone's plaza, where the theater stage is being built for the war declaration. Magath gives him a notebook explaining the state of his "house," which Willy notes is in need of a "full-scale demolition", Magath explaining that it has "severely aged", referring to the conservative decaying military party leading the nation. Willy congratulates Magath on his inevitable upcoming promotion, giving him command of the entire nation's military government, naming him General. Although Magath is not enjoying his new duty, he explains that his only reason to follow Tybur's instructions is because he views him as his superior, even if Willy reminds him he is not involved with the military and its policies, and reminds him that he entrusted the nation to him a month ago. Magath states that the nation is still Willy's, no matter what, as he is the supreme leader of Marley. Willy tells him that he considers the nation to belong to its people, both Marleyans and Eldians living in it.
Thanks to sources and informants, the Tyburs and Magath are aware that enemies from Paradis have crossed the sea and infiltrated the Motherland. They have been living in Marley for months by now, since last year, while the Mid-East War was still ongoing. However, Willy Tybur's sources found out that there are several enemy spies within the Marleyan military itself, and all of them are not from Paradis, but rather traitors from the Marleyan continent who are sympathizers to Eldia and joined the island as collaborationists. Unlike the Paradis intruders, Magath and Tybur are far more concerned with the non-Eldian traitors, as they remain unidentified and they might be wearing Marleyan uniforms. Tybur and Magath also know that the military's executives and their outdated conservative views block any chance of a better future for Marley and they will only lead to its fall. Magath and Tybur suspect that the Paradis spies and their foreign or Marleyan allies are about to launch an assault during the global declaration in Liberio's Eldian internment zone. The two conspire to eliminate Marley's high command and use the enemy spies to do their dirty work in the night of the festival, which will be the only time when the entire military highest command in the whole Marleyan continent will all gather at one place, something that normally never happens.
Numerous diplomats, politicians and celebrities from across the globe come to Liberio, where they are welcomed by Willy Tybur in a party in the city's military building. Promising a solution to the "Eldian problem," Willy invites all his guests to the city's internment zone for Eldians. The next day, the anticipated festival for world peace takes place within the ghetto, much to the surprise of the Eldian residents, and people from outside come with vast different types of food and great spectacles. Willy's theater production is scheduled to take place at night.
Expecting a likely attack from Eldia, Lord Tybur does not bring his family with him to the Liberio internment zone, except for his younger sister Lara. Commander Magath joins Willy as the two travel to the Eldian plaza, heading to the festival together as they discuss the possibility of a surprise attack. Magath informs Willy that he is very likely to get killed during the war declaration. He also talks about the security involved in order to protect Willy and the officials and elites present. Magath deliberately arranged for the security procedure to determine escape routes at the last possible moments, which will give the enemies more time to kill important figures in the meantime. Willy arranges for Magath to have as many military leaders possible all clumped together on the most visible and highest place of the theater seats, General Calvi especially. This in hopes that their enemies will kill as much as possible and remove these incompetent leaders for Magath and Willy, allowing Magath's true ascension to power as the new general.
Willy tells Magath that they must accept that their enemies are preparing to attack and use that fact to their own advantage, to get rid of incompetent and conservative leaders and smoke out enemy infiltrators and backstabbers. And most important of all, Marley needs the militaries, journalists, and diplomats from around the world on its side. Willy wishes to be on stage and to bait their enemies with as many military executives as possible. He tells Magath he can limit the planned sacrifice to the useless leaders, which will leave him free to rebuild the military with whoever he likes. Willy has already arranged for the ruling governmental party of Marley to follow whatever Magath says, and for Magath to appoint to power any new executive leaders he sees fit to replace the old ones, making him the de-facto ruler of the nation. Despite this, Magath is concerned about the number of innocent people not belonging to the military who will die.
Tybur is ready to sacrifice himself for this, confiding that if he escapes and is not among those sacrificed, the world will not listen to what he has to say. The world will not join forces with Marley. Plus, they need to allow the innocent Eldians of the Liberio internment zone to be part of the casualties; they need to become tragic victims to show the world they too suffer through the cruelty of the Paradis Eldians and that they are not their allies. Only in Marley there is a political movement supporting the human rights and emancipation of the Eldians of all internment zones, and Willy wishes to improve the reputations of those Eldians in the world, feeling his family abandoned them. Magath and Willy need to have the Liberio internment zone raided by the island devils in order gain sympathy for mainland Eldians while redirecting all the hate to Paradis Eldians, all in order to save Marley and its Eldian Marleyans. They also hope that among the victims will be as many influential foreign representatives as possible, in order to fuel the world's hatred for the island and show everyone that the Eldian Empire is the real enemy, a still living threat, all while redeeming Marley's status in the world, portraying it as the nation that warned the world and restoring it as the country of heroes once again.
That night, Lord Tybur's theater production takes place in the internment zone's plaza, hosting the most famous journalists and reporters of all the world's major newspapers, and many ambassadors and noble family members from many nations, including all the major ones and Marley itself. Disgusted at being in an internment zone, General Calvi arrives to join the top brass, all the most important leaders of the Army, Navy and Air Force, the whole heart of the Marleyan military, much to the surprise of the Eldian residents. Among the attendants are also the whole Warrior Unit and some of their relatives, and many ordinary Eldian civilians, including Eldian residents of a huge housing building right behind the stage, watching from their windows. Magath deliberately made the theater all open in order to offer all this bait to the enemies with as little safety as possible. Magath himself however, is not present at the stage production, instead he and Koslow bring a fully armed team, all wearing battle uniforms, atop a nearby building to observe the crowd for any suspicious actions as they wait for an incoming attack.
Calvi immediately notices all the open-air seating at the theater and questions the place's security, learning that Magath is the one responsible for on-site operations. Soldiers and security are posted everywhere on the streets around the plaza, following Magath's instructions and reporting to him every small detail about the people's movements via telephone. Modern anti-Titan artillery has already been secretly placed, in the possibility of a Titan from Paradis attacking. Just a few moments before the show begins, Magath's soldiers take notice of the ambassador and politician Kiyomi Azumabito leaving the theater with her bodyguards, causing Magath to put the Azumabito clan and the whole nation and government of Hizuru under suspicion of being enemies of Marley and allies of Paradis.
Willy Tybur's festival, speech and stage production have the purpose of uniting as many nations of the world as possible by informing them that the fact they believed for years—that Karl Fritz threatened to unleash the Wall Titans should the ever be attacked—was a lie because Fritz made a vow of pacifism which each of his successors inherited. However, Lord Tybur reveals that the Founding Titan has recently been stolen by Eren Yeager, who is not bound by the Vow Renouncing War and might be willing to unleash the Rumbling of "tens of millions" of Wall Titans onto the entire world.
Raid on Liberio
While Willy Tybur holds his speech, surprising and moving the ambassadors and VIPS attending the event, and declares war on Paradis Island, suddenly Eren Yeager himself appears in his Attack Titan form behind the stage, smashing and murdering Tybur in front of everyone. While most of the audience flee the slaughter, Eren moves on, kills General Calvi, and annihilates all or the majority of the assembled military leaders of Marley - whose most unneeded members have been deliberately sacrificed by Willy and Magath, so that Magath could take control through the governmental party's approval and could build Marley's military anew with more competent members. Meanwhile, Willy's sister, Lara Tybur, is revealed to be the real War Hammer Titan and transforms and attacks Eren. While Magath's troops shoot Eren with anti-Titan artillery, they are suddenly attacked and forced to retreat by the Survey Corps of the Eldian military of Paradis. Although she manages to defeat Eren, the War Hammer Titan is taken down by Mikasa Ackerman. Magath and his soldiers relocate inside the buildings, as the other forces of the Marley Army engage in a fight and the soldiers of Public Security handle the evacuation of the civilians and escorting the reinforcements.
While the Survey Corps throw explosives on buildings occupied by Marleyan soldiers or fight them in battle, Magath calls for reinforcements from the Marley Army from the nearby mountains and from the Marley Navy from nearby sea bases, and has the internment zone closed-off and the entire Liberio city surrounded outside. The situation on the zone's plaza resolves into an all-out Titan war when the War Hammer Titan gets back up and in addition, the Survey Corps kill reinforcements and attach lights to cleared buildings for a yet unknown plan. After a fight between the Attack and War Hammer Titans, Pieck and Galliard join as the Cart and Jaw Titans, the former being equipped with artillery gear manned by the Panzer Unit. Once the Beast Titan appears as well, the Marleyan soldiers, Magath included, are forced to stand back as the Survey Corps and the Titans are about to clash once more. At the primary military ports of Liberio outside the internment zone, Armin Arlert transforms into the Colossus Titan, completely annihilating the ports and the assembled primary naval fleet that docked to bring reinforcements.
During the fight in Liberio's zone, the Beast Titan is cut down by Levi, seemingly killing Zeke with an explosive afterwards, the soldiers of the Panzer Unit are all killed, and Pieck is severely wounded when her Titan is blown apart by the Survey Corps' Thunder Spears. As the Attack and Jaw Titans engage in a fight, a stolen Marleyan zeppelin arrives at the zone to pick the Corps up. After Eren can get hold of the crystal shell now holding the War Hammer Titan, he picks up the defeated Jaw Titan, who got distracted by the airship, puts the shell into his mouth and uses the Jaw to crush it with force, smashing Lara Tybur and drinking her remains to consume her spinal fluid. With Marley's military severely weakened, the Survey Corps flee aboard the airship. Pieck reveals to Magath that among the Marleyan collaborationists who betrayed the country to work with Paradis, one of them is a devout follower of Zeke, leading to suspicions about Zeke's loyalty and investigations about his status and Restorationist background.
War against Paradis
In the aftermath of the battle, the other nations of the world are outraged and disgusted by the Raid on Liberio, and all the major nations lost at least one VIP, making them involved in the war. The majority of the world's nations lend their support to Marley and the Global Alliance is officially estabilished. Marley and the military forces of most of the world's nations unite to perform an annihilation attack on Paradis Island in six months. Thus, Willy Tybur actually succeeded in his plan to unite the Earth against Eldia, despite having sacrificed his life in the process. Magath also discovers that Zeke is not dead but defected to Eldia and fled aboard the airship that was stole by Zeke's own minions who betrayed Marley. Since Gabi and Falco have also boarded the enemy airship and are now prisoners, Reiner pitches a proposal to Magath; launch a surprise attack on Paradis to kill Eren Yeager and reclaim the Founding Titan, before the Global Allied Forces are assembled and ready to destroy Paradis' kingdom within the Walls. Magath accepts and one month later, after being named the new General of Marley, personally leads a small military contingent aboard seven zeppelins to Paradis, roughly 500 soldiers. He sends Pieck and Galliard to scout ahead and infiltrate the enemy military, while two of the airships remain south of the Walls as rearguard. Pieck managed to find Gabi and rescue her from her captors.
Eventually, the invading Marleyan forces attacked Shiganshina District a engaged in a large scale battle against the gathered Eldian military forces in the city. Reiner and Galliard are sent to fight Eren, while General Magath, Pieck, Koslow and other soldiers fight Eren with modern heavy anti-Titan artillery from atop the southern wall, providing provided cover support. After discussing the situation with Pieck and Gabi, Magath and his comrades realized that Zeke had royal blood and their attack's objective became preventing him and Eren from coming into contact. Meanwhile, the rest of the Marleyan forces engage the Yeagerists in battle with firearms and bombs, gaining significant advantage. Much of the help and cover is provided by the soldiers of the Air Force, who massacre numerous Eldians with the five airships from the sky.
During the battle in Shiganshina District, Zeke arrived to support Eren, and annihilated the five attacking Marleyean zeppelins and kept Reiner and Galliard at bay, while a group of Yeagerists led by Floch Forster harassed Magath and Pieck's squad atop the Wall. Meanwhile, the Eldian military of Paradis led by Commander Dot Pixis joins the Yeagerists in fighting the Marleyan soldiers attacking the city. Zeke's Beast Titan was eventually struck down by Magath thanks to a deception devised by Pieck. Magath also kept continued to shoot Eren's Attack Titan, while Koslow, Pieck and the other soldiers managed to eliminate all the harassing Yeagerists except Floch. However, Zeke survived the shot after falling from the wall, and kept waiting for Eren to come into contact with him.
Realizing he needed to get rid of the enemy soldiers, Zeke screamed to summon an army of Pure Titans out of the members of the Eldian military who previously consumed his spinal fluid, causing the deaths of Galliard and Colt, as well as the deaths of all the non-Titan Marleyan soldiers who were fighting within the city. Magath shot the Beast Titan once again, apparently thwarting the threat of the Rumbling forever, while Falco was inheriting the Jaw Titan. However Zeke was only pretending to be dead this time, while Armin managed to destroy the Cart Titan's anti-Titan gear with a Thunder Spear, while Mikasa killed Koslow and another sole surviving soldier of the Cart's squad, leaving only Magath and Pieck to keep fighting.
Having exhausted his power, Eren jumped out of his Titan to run toward Zeke to make contact with him, while Jean and Connie provived cover against Reiner's further attempts to stop him. Just as Eren was about to reach Zeke, however, Gabi shot Eren with Colt's anti-Titan rifle, decapitating Eren on the spot. In the few seconds before passing out and losing his life completely Eren's conscious head was caught by Zeke, gaining contact and allowing the two to reach the Coordinate within the Paths. A brief moment later, Eren manages to activate the full power of the Founding Titan, undos the hardening in the Walls of Paradis, and awakens the Wall Titans. With the Founder's power, Eren announced in the Paths to all the Subjects of Ymir over the world that he would lead the Wall Titans to slaughter all life in the lands outside of Paradis Island, much to the terror of all Eldians living in the world's internment camps.
The Rumbling
Shortly after, Leonhart is among a crowd of Eldians who desperately try to convince the Liberio internment zone's guards to allow them to evacuate before Eren brings the Rumbling in the city. Unfortunately, none of the Public Security guards believe the warnings of the crowd, as only Subjects of Ymir were able to hear Eren's broadcast, and accuse the Eldians of plotting to escape their internment camps. The guards begin to detain the group and Leonhart, recalling Annie's promise to return to him, begins lashing out at them. Leonhart, along with numerous other Eldians in Liberio, including the families of the Warriors (except the Yeagers, who were unfortunately locked in a jail of Public Security due to Zeke's betrayal), manages to escape the internment zone. The details of the riot are unknown, but they eventually manage to reach the station of the Marleyan city of Liberio, outside the ghetto. Taking a Marleyan soldier and his family hostage, Leonhart forces him to operate a train and take all of the surviving Eldians who fled the internment zone to Fort Salta so that they can steal an airship and escape the Rumbling.
It is unknown how Marley and all the other countries in the world overall reacted to the mass hysteria of the Subjects of Ymir, but it seems more likely that they eventually ended up listening to them and sound the alarm, as the panic of all the Eldian residents would be worldwide. Furthermore, the much-respected Tybur family is likely to have confirmed the warnings and alerted the global population. Meanwhile, in Paradis, the Marleyan forces aboard the two remaining rearguard zeppelins retreated back to Marley after witnessing the Wall Titans and the Founder marching south, leaving General Magath and any stragglers from the attack for dead. Thus, the soldiers aboard those airships also gave the alarm to Marley and the rest of the world. The Global Alliance starts hastily assembling their naval forces to face the threat and attempt to stop the Rumbling.
In the following days, Magath, Pieck, Reiner, Gabi, Falco, and the newly freed Annie Leonhart formed an alliance with former Survey Crops members to stop the Rumbling, also bringing the former Anti-Marleyan Volunteer Onyankopon along for help. By Magath's orders, Pieck also brought the Marleyan traitor Yelena with them as a captive. They are later joined by Kiyomi Azumabito and five renowned engineers from Hizuru. During the struggle to leave the sole naval port of Paradis, Magath is aided by the Eldian Keith Shadis, and the two willingly sacrificed their lives to ensure their allies' safe escape from the island.
As the allied group make their sea journey to Marley and prepare a flying boat in Odiha to reach Fort Salta, Eren and his Wall Titans make their way to the mainland and destroy numerous cities within northeastern Marley, slaughtering the Global Alliance's fleet gathered in the port city of Karifa. The Rumbling attacks humanity, leading to the destruction of most of the Marleyan continent, including Liberio, and millions of people dying crushed by the Titans. While Marley is under total anarchy, with cities being evacuated and people fleeing via ships (such as the citizens of the Marleyan city Odiha), the sole remaining united contingent of the Marleyan Military led by Secretary Muller gathers at Fort Salta to make a final attempt to stop the Rumbling via an aereal attack.
Meanwhile in southern Marley, Leonhart's group of survivors from Liberio reaches Fort Salta with the stolen train, hoping to find an airship that the refugees can use to evade the Rumbling. While still in the train, they realize the Rumbling is catching up to them, causing alarm and urgency. Shortly after reaching the fort, they spot the fleet of airships taking off, just as the Rumbling is coming to the military base. Initially despairing that they have been left to die, the Marleyan conductor then realizes the airships took off in response to the Titans' arrival, and are in fact a military squadron about to bomb the incoming Titans from an unreachable height. Waiting for the Founder and the Titans to approach, Secretary Muller gives a speech to all his Marleyan troops at the fort, reminding the soldiers that the reason why the world is getting destroyed is the hatred of humans. Hoping that Marley and humanity can see a future again, Muller promises not to make the same mistakes he did again. The speech is also heard by the refugees from Liberio outside the fort.
As soon as the Founder starts showing hostility, Muller commands his troops to begin the bombardment, using explosive to attack Eren's massive Titan body. While the explosives work against the Wall Titans, the main _target and key to stop the Rumbling is unaffected by this. Furthermore the attack was commenced too soon and not from the right distance due to panic and haste. Despite the efforts, the airship squadron is swiftly annihilated when an apparition of the Beast Titan scatters projectiles towards the fleet, killing all the Marleyan troops within them. Afterwards, just as Muller declared defeat, a flying boat approaches the Founding Titan and Eren is soon confronted by his former comrades alongside the Warriors. Meanwhile, the flying boat runs out of fuel and its pilot, Onyankopon, manages a rough landing, crashing outside Fort Salta but surviving. The Marleyans identify their Armored and Cart Titans, but are also shocked to see that soldiers from Paradis are with them to stop the Rumbling. They observe as the allied group struggles against phantom apparitions of past incarnations of the Nine Titans summoned by the spirit of the Founder Ymir. Lacking strength to help them, Muller urges his men to try anyway and sends soldiers outside to operate the cannons in the fort.
Noticing a Titan flying overhead, Fort Salta's soldiers spot their allies hanging on and flying back toward the Founder for another attack. This gives them hope to continue firing the fort's cannons, despite them being largely ineffective against the approaching Titans. While they're about to continue fighting, the soldiers are interrupted by the arrival of refugees. As they are about to confront them, the Marleyans notice that the refugees's clothings show signs of removed armbands, immediately realizing they're Eldians. The Marleyans become hostile and point their rifles at Leonhart and the other refugees, provoking the resentful Eldians to point their own weapons at them with hostility. Leonhart is the only one who tries to remain calm and tells the Marleyan soldiers that some wounded refugees need help. One soldier brusquely tells him there is no time for that, and demands with suspicion that the refugees tell him why they are really at the fort.
Despite Leonhart's efforts to calm both groups down, the Marleyans and Eldian Marleyans are about to open fire, only for more Marleyan soldiers to join the scene with firearms, demanding that the Eldians drop their guns immediately. Among with them joined the train conductor who brought the refugees to Liberio, much to the surprise of Leonhart, feeling betrayed that the Marleyan man isn't speaking for them and their innocence, although the man as a look of conflicted feelings and regret in his face for not taking the side of the group who rescued his family from the Rumbling. Just before things escalate into violence and killing, Secretary Muller interrupts the hostilities by firing three shots at the sky with his guns, reminding both Marleyans and Eldians at the fort of his speech.
While Muller calms everyone down and convinces them to work together, the Rumbling continues across the entire world, killing millions of people. Somewhere in the continent of Marley along a coast near the sea, a large crowd of fleeing people is cornered by the Wall Titans and the sea, with people pushing past each other in mass hysteria and some of them falling off a cliff, including a young mother, whose infant child in red bundle is saved by other people struggling, who pass them among each other to prevent them from falling off the cliff. The mother and the baby may have been two residents of Marley's biggest port city, who were briefly seen by Eren. Meanwhile at Fort Salta, the Warriors and the Survey Corps manage to stop the Rumbling thanks to Zeke allowing Levi to kill him, causing the Wall Titans to halt before they could destroy all of humanity outside Paradis. Among the survivors are also the aforementioned crowds of people and the baby in the red bundle somewhere else near the sea in the mainland. At Fort Salta, the Founding Titan is blown up with explosives and the transformation of Armin's Colossal Titan.
The crisis of the Rumbling has stopped, and outside the military fort the Warriors Gabi, Pieck, Falco, and Annie are surprised to find refugees from Liberio, including their families, much to their tears as they believed they were all dead. Unfortunately, Falco's parents also learn that Colt is dead. However, Eren continues to struggle along with a giant parasitic anomaly that emerged from the Founder's beheaded body prior the Colossal's explosion. Wanting to keep fighting, Eren produced a giant fully bodied Titan form, with the same size as the Colossal Titan.
Still in his Titan form, Armin approaches Eren to engage in a fight, while Reiner attacks the huge anomaly to prevent it from reaching Eren. Having previously warned her comrades of the anomaly and how she saw it when she decapitated Eren, Gabi fears the Rumbling might resume if the creature is allowed to reach Eren. While the Warriors and the Survey Corps prepare to head back to face them, Muller helps Leonhart to stand, as the two come to a mutual understanding and Muller tells him he made enough mistakes in his life. The Marleyan soldiers help the injured Eldian refugees by sending them medics to help them.
Unfortunately, just then the giant anomaly releases a Titan gas that was previously weaponized by Marley in past wars to turn Eldians into Titans. Realizing this, Levi, Mikasa, and Pieck to evacuate Fort Salta aboard Falco's flying Jaw Titan, leaving Gabi, Jean, and Connie behind as they all inhalated the gas, much to the deep grief of Falco and Pieck for their loved ones, with Mikasa having to take Pieck by force to prevent her from running back to her father. All the Eldians present at Fort Salta (except Annie who is also present as she was out of reach for her team) turn into Pure Titans, much to the horror of Muller, Onyankopon, Annie, and the other Marleyans. However, the Titans ignore them all and instead run toward the anomaly, causing Reiner to realize the creature has summoned an army. While Armin fights Eren and Falco attempts to give him cover with Levi and Mikasa, Pieck and Annie transform into Titans again and join Reiner in holding the anomaly. The battle ends when Mikasa manages to reach the Founder's mouth, where she finds Eren's disembodied head (caused by Gabi shooting him) and cuts it from the spine of the Titan body, killing Eren for good.
Moments later, the giant parasite vanishes, possibly dying, and all the Pure Titans in the world return human and normal, including Gabi, Jean, Connie, the Warriors' families, but also Connie's mother back at Ragako in Paradis Island. The reunions of the now former Subjects of Ymir outside Fort Salta are cut short by the arrival of the Marleyans, who are pointing their guns at them once more. Leonhart tries to convince Secretary Muller that they are all ordinary humans now, but Muller, still worried about what might happen next, demands that the Eldians prove to him they are no longer dangerous. With some convincing from Armin, who confirms Eren's death, Muller is satisfied with the brief speech, allows to cease fire, and commands his soldiers to lower their weapons. All the survivors at the battle's scene, presumably walk back to the fort, except for Mikasa. The Rumbling exterminated 80% of the human global population.
Post-Rumbling
Three years later, humanity remains led by the Global Alliance, which includes Marley. The Global Alliance's objectives are still global unity and the opposition against Paradis Island, but now they are also seeking peace negotiations as at the moment they don't have the strength for another war. Back at the island, Eldia has fallen under a totalitarian regime of the Yeagerists, who have reformed the military in an effort to modernize it. At this time, all the Marleyans (around less than 4,600 of them) that were previously captured from the scouting fleets presumably continue living in the new Eldia, including Niccolo, as well as the former Anti-Marleyan Volunteers. It is unknown if all these captives were ever released, either prior the timeskip or after peace negotiations, but Niccolo is last seen living with the Braus family, looking bitterly with contempt as the Yeagerists call for more war and the possible destruction or conquest of his people and the rest of humanity.
The Global Alliance's main objective is now to ensure the survival of humanity, keep united all the people from all nations, and heal the world from the Rumbling to start over. The Global Alliance sends envoys to initiate peace negotiations with Paradis, with Hizuru sending Kiyomi Azumabito. Marley, the main and founding nation of the Global Alliance, sends Armin, Reiner, Pieck, Connie, Jean, and Annie back to Paradis to join the peace talks, while Queen Historia is welcoming of peace and the Global Alliance, a large portion of the island's population remain fearful and hateful, just as Marley was after the Eldian Empire fell. The outcome of these peace negotiations is never shown.
Levi remained in Marley and lives with Gabi, Falco, Onyankopon, and a bitter Yelena. They help healing the environment and provide humanitarian aid and support for refugees who lost their homes to the Rumbling. In the manga version, Levi, Gabi, Falco, and Onyankopon are shown walking in a surviving city of the Marleyan continent, with an airplane flying above them.
Many years later, Paradis Island is shown getting destroyed with bombs in another conflict, leaving nothing but ruins. The details, background, and identity of the attackers is not given, making any possible involvement from Marley unconfirmed.

Trivia
- Marley resembles Nazi Germany, Great Britain, and Fascist Italy in both its general aesthetics and politics, but its technological development is slightly less advanced, being at around early 20th century level.
- Marley's policy of segregating Eldians into ghettos and mandatory armbands in public to identify their race parallels the Nazi anti-Jewish policy.
- Marley's main policies, however, differ from Nazi Germany's, as Marley works more as a typical imperialistic state annexing foreign lands and their inhabitants, rather than believing in a superior human race meant to rule over others. Marley's way is more similar to Ancient Rome and the British Empire.
- Names like Niccolo, Carlo, Theo and Calvi are Mediterranean in origin, adding to the Italian aesthetic.
- In the manga, Marley's specific system of government is unknown, and it is only known that its ruling party is heavily influenced by the Military.
- In the anime version - which is supervisioned by manga author Hajime Isayama - the information card of episode 60 states that Marley is a military dictatorship, which might indicate that the general might serve as the leader of the nation (at least publicly).
- In both manga and anime, Willy Tybur and the Military have so much control and influence over the nation that Tybur easily arranges for the entire governmental party to accomodate and follow anything General Magath says and wants. In the manga, Tybur also states that he entrusted Marley to Magath's leadership, making him the de-facto leader of the party and nation.
- High-ranking officers of the Military's Public Security branch are also known to be part of the government and be heavily involved with the government's private affairs and intel.
- Marley's flag's emblem is a seashell with seven sections, just like the number of Titans Marley gained during the Great Titan War. This is a coincidence, as the flag had this emblem since before the Power of the Titans existed, as shown in Ymir Fritz's memories. Also Marley would not base its flag on anything related to Eldia and the Power of the Titans.
- Marley draws on Latin and Italian inspiration for much of its naming and culture:
- The original Japanese name for Marley is Māre (マーレ), which strongly resembles the Latin/Italian word "mare," meaning "sea." This nomenclature matches with Marley's seashell emblem. A main purpose of the Survey Corps during a large portion of the story is to reach the sea, which in the end becomes Marley, the other side of the sea.
- Ancient Marley may have been inspired by the Roman Empire, as it resembles Roman aesthetics.
- The ancient conflict between Marley and the clan Eldia mirrors the real-world conflicts between Romans and the various invading Germanic tribes. The Marleyans' neighboring enemies of the Eldian tribe strongly resemble the Germanic tribes of Central and Northern Europe.
- Marley shares some similarities with the Roman Empire given their names for historical events such as "The Tragic Fall of Lago," "The Devastation of Monte," and "The Ravaging of Valle," which all three are names from the Latin family of languages. The names of Lago, Monte, and Valle are derived from the Italian words for "lake," "mountain," and "valley," respectively.
- Marleyan cuisine includes pasta, pizza, and seafood.
- The majority of known Marleyan location names are based on Latin or Italian nomenclature.
- Some of its citizens have Italian names such as Niccolo, Carlo and Calvi.
- Although originally a family serving Eldia, the name of the Marleyan noble Tybur family appears to be a variant spelling of the name "Tiber," which is itself a variant of the Latin name "Tiberius." "Tiber" is also the Latin and English name of Italy's third largest river ("Tevere" in Italian), which runs through Rome.
- Marley's wine is famous and loved by the world, including the people of Paradis Island. The Marleyans pride themselves with the quality of their wine.
- Marley's very first appearance in the series is in chapter 33 of the manga and episode 25 of the anime adaptation in its first season. Only Mr. Leonhart's house and a bit of its outdoors in the Liberio internment zone can be seen. Marley's second more detailed appearance in the anime is during season 2's first episode, in the end credits in which Titans emerging from the sea are shown to invade the Marleyan city of Lago during the Dark Ages. The second time Marley is shown in the anime story is during the tenth episode of season 2, during the flashbacks of Ymir's past in Marley.
- Willy Tybur claims that Marley always had a traditional culture centered around war and militarism, even before its rebirth after the Great Titan War.
- Known "native/ethnic" Marleyans (Marleyans who are neither Subjects of Ymir nor originate from conquered nations) who fight as members of the Eldian Unit are the commanding officers Theo Magath and Koslow, and the five soldiers of the Panzer Unit (one of them named Carlo).
- The Panzer Unit serve as a subdivision of the Warrior Unit, as the users of the Cart Titan's gear.
- The Commander of the Airborne Unit is also a commanding officer of the Eldian Unit members during the Battle of Fort Slava.
- In the manga, the Marleyan family held hostage by Leonhart to ensure safe transport via train during the Rumbling includes five members, being the train conductor soldier, his wife, his son, his daughter, and another older woman. In the anime version, the older woman is removed from any scene. In both versions, the family is spared from the destruction of Liberio as they reach Fort Salta with the other refugees.
- If it wasn't for Marley, the Subjects of Ymir would have already been exterminated a long time ago by the other nations of the world.
- It is mentioned by Udo that the treatment of Eldians of Marley is a lot tamer compared to that from many other countries and the rest of the world. Since the end of the Great Titan War, humanity wanted the Subjects of Ymir all wiped out and their reputation has not improved since then, due to Marley still using Titans as war weapons throughout most of the past century. As a result, most of humanity still wish for the extermination of all Subjects of Ymir to happen, but Marley convinced the other nations to keep them alive in internment zones.
- Annie also states the common knowledge that the Marleyan state is the only thing protecting the Subjects of Ymir living in the internment zones, especially those of Marley itself, and if Marley vanishes, there will be nothing left to prevent the other nations from choosing extermination, despite the Tybur family's attempts to improve the status of Eldians.
- Still, most of the other countries treat Eldian residents so badly that many of them relocate to Marley's internment zones for better life conditions and treatment, like Udo's family. Due to Udo's ability to translate the language of a soldier from one of the nations of the Mid-East Allied Forces, Udo's family likely came from one of said nations, and relocated from there to Marley. Leonhart is also known to be from an unnamed foreign nation, but it is unknown whether he already lived in the Marleyan continent before he found out he was a Subject of Ymir, or if he moved from his homeland to Marley's mainland territory.
- While it is mentioned that the nation of Hizuru has also more tolerance for Eldians, its government and people do not take any stance in the Subjects of Ymir's controversy and maintain neutrality, presumably most of the population still looking down on them, disliking them. As Hizuru was never conquered by Eldia, there are either no internment zones there, or there's at least one or very few, depending on whether Eldians are allowed to live there or not. Nevertheless, the majority of the world, most of Hizuru's people included, support the extermination of the Subjects of Ymir due to their infected blood type and ability to become Titans, which is a source of fear even for those who don't necessarily feel hate for them. The citizens of the internment zones also still favor moving to Marley and consider it the better place for least awful life conditions and treatment.
- Marley's reason to desire for the annihilation of Eldia may go beyond revenge or conquest. Since modern Marley uses Titans to conquer other countries, they are as hated as Eldia was and if they did not ally with the rest of the world first, other major nations may ally against them as soon as the Titans became obsolete, as theorized by Theo Magath. The only reason the world rallied with them in the first place was because they saw Marley as the lesser of two evils.
