Why do you never learn? Love, dream, hope... Worthless. Mere words. And yet your faith in them refuse to die. But no longer. I shall carve a despair into the human soul that will last until your kind finally dwindles and dies!Mordegon

Biography
Prior to the beginning of the game, Mordegon was the mysterious cataclysm responsible of reducing the ancient kingdom of Nou Wat to ruins. In more modern times, he led his army of monsters to raid and ultimately destroy the kingdom of Zwaardsrust and, not long after, the kingdom of Dundrasil, where he tried to kill the Luminary while he was still a baby. While he succeeded in ravaging the kingdom, he failed to finish off the legendary hero.
However, during the invasion of Dundrasil, he took over King Carnelian's body so that he could get information about the Luminary's whereabouts and label him the "Darkspawn", so that he could turn the entire army of Heliodor against him. Early into his possession of King Carnelian, he coaxed the Luminary’s father, King Irwin, to approach him before stabbing the king and leaving him alone in the tunnels, resulting in his immediate death. He was also responsible of sowing the seeds of jealousy in Jasper, by bestowing the highest honors of triumphant campaigns unto his best friend and rival, Hendrik, while making sure he got no praise.
Mordegon first appears in person when the hero goes to Yggdrasil, stealing his Luminary powers for himself. He sends the sacred tree crashing into Erdrea, resulting in countless deaths, destruction, and ancient monsters taking advantage of the dire situation, such as the Gloomnivore. He then has his minions (led by the Spectral Sentinels, which are themselves led by Jasper) search for survivors so that he can reap their souls. He sets up his base of operations at the Fortress Of Fear, presumably built by either him or his minions, where Yggdrasil once stood.
Afterwards, the hero then goes back in time to prevent the destruction of the Yggdrasil Tree. The fiend kills Jasper to ensure he isn’t discovered, but is finally defeated by the hero before he could rob him of his power. However, stopping Mordegon ends up allowing another ancient evil to return.
It is eventually revealed that he is in fact the evil side of the mage Morcant, who betrayed Erdwin in an attempt to claim the Dark One's power for himself. Though he still attempts to prevent Calasmos from being resurrected, he attempts to take over the world.

Trivia
- Mordegon's order of Dundrasil's destruction may be a callback to Dragon Quest II, where Hargon did the same to Moonbroke Kingdom.
