Penelope Blossom is the secondary antagonist of the CW soap opera Riverdale.
She was portrayed by Nathalie Boltt regularly, Madelaine Petsch as a teenager, and Simone Sadler as a child.
Personality
Penelope is abusive, cold-hearted, and manipulative. She abuses Cheryl on a regular basis, often verbally and occasionally physically as well. However, she seems to care about Jason, as she was devastated by his death. On the other hand, it can be speculated that Penelope was somehow corrupted by her evil husband. In season 5, she decided to change her ways and turned herself in the police in which she served at least 7 years.
Biography
Early life
Penelope was born in 1974 or 1975 and was taken in by the Sisters of Quiet Mercy as a young baby. When she turned 8 years old in 1982 or 1983, she was adopted by Nana Rose Blossom and Mr. Blossom who introduced her to their 2 sons Clifford and Claudius with Penelope serving as their adoptive sister at first and later on as Clifford's bride to be. It is also implied that the Blossoms mistreated her a lot. When she became a teenager, Penelope started going to Riverdale High where she had a reputation for being the school monitor and teacher's pet.
In 1988, Penelope goes to Javier Luna's funeral and tells his son Jaime Luna's girlfriend Hermione Gomez that she shouldn't trust him because of his criminal life which led to the death of his father. Hermione responds by insulting Penelope and Alice Smith who told her the same thing before walking away from both of them in a huff.
Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Midnight Club
In her Junior Year of High School in 1991-1992, Penelope catches Alice, Hermione and Sierra Samuels in the girls' bathroom and tells them to give each of their hall passes to her. Alice insults her when Penelope asks for her hall pass, which causes a physical fight between the 2 girls, causing all 4 of them including FP Jones and Fred Andrews to get Saturday detention from Principal Featherhead.
Whilst in detention, they all play Secrets & Sins in which Penelope explains how she grew up for the first 8 years of her life in the Sisters of Quiet Mercy before being adopted by the Blossom family and being sold as a bride to be to their son Clifford. Everybody is shocked at Penelope's secret about the Blossoms and Hermione tells her to find a way to run away from them which causes Penelope to insult her and for the 2 to have a physical fight which ends with all 6 of them getting another 6 weeks of Saturday detention by Featherhead.
One Saturday detention, they all find a game in Miss Krabappel's drawer called Gryphons & Gargoyles (G&G) and decide to play it with Penelope being the one to introduce the game to them and also be the Game Master. They all keep on playing and roleplaying as the game's characters and after detention ends, come to Riverdale High at nighttime to continue on before 1 night, Penelope alongside the other 5 members run into Hiram Lodge (formerly Jaime Luna), Darryl Doiley, Tom Keller and Marty Mantle also roleplaying as characters from G&G. Realizing their similar stories, the 10 of them team up to play G&G properly. One day, Penelope, with sinister intentions for the game, sends invitations to all the members of the Midnight Club's lockers including herself and the next day, every member including Penelope finds them and sees that they have to come to Riverdale High at nighttime to ascend to the next level of G&G by drinking from the chalices and goblets laid out for them. (Secretly containing poisonous drinks made by Penelope).
That night, all 10 members of the Midnight Club arrive at Riverdale High and after listening to Penelope's instructions about drinking from the chalices and goblets, go and find all of them and drink them alongside Penelope doing so as well. Fred, FP, Alice, Hermione and Sierra then show Penelope, Hiram, Tom, Darryl and Marty a concert of their rock band the Fred Heads before they all (excluding Alice who goes to the bathroom) get high on Fizzle Rocks from Hiram with the drugged and crazed Penelope making out with Fred. This is all part of her plan however as she then wears her Gargoyle King uniform, goes outside wearing it and notices Principal Featherhead snooping around the school halls. He drinks one of the chalices before the Gargoyle King Penelope murders him from behind and stuffs his dead body in the school closet. After that, she goes to the girls' bathroom and frightens Alice in there before leaving, taking off the costume and going back to the party in the classroom as Penelope and continuing to party with the rest.
The next day, Penelope finds out that whilst they were all partying last night, Fred's father Artie passed away which causes her to attend his funeral and later on, procession at Pop's where she tells Sierra, Alice, Fred, Hermione and FP to forget about the Fizzle Rocks and what happened between them. A few weeks later, Penelope is walking through the hallways of Riverdale High until she, the other 9 members of the Midnight Club and the whole school witness Featherhead's dead body fall down from the school closet with blue lips from drinking from the poisonous chalices and stab wounds from being murdered by the Gargoyle King present in him, shocking everyone witnessing it.
Later on, Penelope, Sierra, Hermione, Alice, Fred, FP, Marty, Hiram, Tom and Darryl are all in a classroom where Alice blames them for murdering Featherhead whilst drugged, Penelope claims that none of them (including herself) murdered him because they were too busy partying. The blame is then put on Alice by everyone who revokes the claim until they all realize that if they continue on playing G&G, more people will die, causing the Midnight Club to form a pact in which they all will never speak of the game again, after which, each member including Penelope destroys and gets rid of the game.
With the Midnight Club broken down after getting rid of G&G, Penelope and the other 10 members distance and estrange themselves from each other until they are not on talking terms anymore. She starts a relationship with Clifford, plans to be his bride and decides to remain with the Blossoms in Thornhill after realizing its her only hope and goal in life.
Preceding Riverdale
After graduating from high school, Penelope marries Clifford and soon gets pregnant with 3 kids: Jason, Cheryl and Julian however Cheryl absolves Julian, meaning Penelope only gives birth to Cheryl and Jason. After the birth, Clifford soon becomes heir to Blossom Maple Syrup whilst his and Penelope's relationship starts to deteriorate slowly, she verbally, emotionally and sometimes physically abuses Cheryl whilst being more kinder on Jason as he is the heir to Blossom Maple Syrup after Clifford. In 2017, Penelope along with Clifford, Cheryl and Nana Rose find out that Jason has started a relationship with Polly Cooper, sister of Betty Cooper and daughter of Alice (formerly Smith) and Hal Cooper, causing the Blossoms to disown him with Jason then secretly taking Cheryl on a boat ride on the 4th of July.
Season 1
She seem to be there when Jason is believe to be drowned, it was a relief for her that Cheryl was not death, when the copse of Jason if found in the river with a bullet in the head she was shock to know he was murdered, but nobody knew who was really behind this. She was of course with her husband Clifford Blossom when the police demand to Cheryl what really happen, because Penelope was always more close to Jason then Cheryl, so, Jason wanted to move away so then Cheryl can have her chance to be close to their parents, much to Penelope and Clifford dismay, while she had a bad start With Alice that she slap in the face after she write an article about Jason's autopsy.
She was never happy when she learn the truth about the plan of Jason, she became again spiteful about Cheryl, she also refuse that her daughter show up to Jason's funeral pretending that she already say goodbye to him, much to her shock Cheryl walk in the funeral, she get very angry at Cheryl for disobey her, threatened her to put her on the internet in Europe.
She buried Jason like she was predicted in the family graveyard, but she was shock to know Polly who was the ex-fiancée of Jason was pregnant, she tell Polly during her baby shower that not all its lost forever, of course when Cheryl confront her to tell her why she is so cold to her, instead to be close to her then Jason, Penelope grabbed her and bring her in the family maple syrup farm revealed that her father wanted Cheryl to have it and not Jason, saying to she Cheryl that she can drown herself in the syrup if she want, when Cheryl finally revealed that Clifford kill their own son, working for the Southside Serpents, she call the police, but when Office Keller and his men's came, Clifford commit suicide for be sure to not be imprisoned, of course when Cheryl wanted to talk to her mother about her problems, Penelope does not care. This makes Cheryl wanted to kill herself, but she is save by Archie and the others, as Betty makes a speech at Riverdale party telling that everyone should get in a fresh start, Penelope found Cheryl who then burn all the house, so, she and her can have fresh start, much to the dismay of the latter.
Season 3
In the end of Season 3, it is revealed that Penelope is the mastermind behind the Gryphons and Gargoyles. She is also the true Gargoyle King and passed the kingship to Chic just to start her own empire and was pulling Hiram's strings all along. She was responsible for Principal Featherhead's murder.
Season 5
In Season 5, Penelope decided turn herself to the authorities and will get paroled in a few years.
