Sofia Falcone (DC)

Sofia Falcone is an antagonist in DC Comics, first appearing during Batman: The Long Halloween. She is the daughter of mob boss Carmine Falcone and the sister of Mario and Alberto Falcone.

Biography

The Long Halloween

Sofia is married to Rocco Gigante, with whom she has two children. Her brother Alberto and cousin Johnny Viti are murdered by the serial killer Holiday. Holiday's activities throughout Gotham City cause Gotham's major crime lords to make moves in order to eliminate the killer. Sofia and her father Carmine hire the Riddler to deduce Holiday's identity, but Riddler's ultimate conclusion is that Carmine himself might be Holiday. Obviously, Carmine and Sofia are not impressed.

In order to find Holiday, Sofia searches for the person responsible for creating Holiday's weapons. She learns that the weapons are built by somebody known as "Gunsmith" and after murdering her source of information, Sofia tracks down Gunsmith. However, she only finds Gunsmith's corpse, who had been killed by Holiday.

One year later, Holiday's identity has still not been solved. After former District Attorney Harvey Dent, now the disfigured vigilante Two-Face, murders Carmine, Sofia attempts to attack him but is shoved out of a window by Catwoman. Sofia falls down onto the street and nearly bleeds to death. However, she is saved by one of Carmine's henchmen, Angelo Mirti. Sofia flees to Italy where her brother Mario lives. There, Sofia deliberately scars one side of her face to resemble the scars of her dead father. Sofia also claims that the accident rendered her paraplegic, using a wheelchair to seem crippled and weak,

Dark Victory

In Italy, Sofia assembles several of her father's old allies. Although the meeting is disrupted by Batman and Catwoman, the gangsters escape. Sofia later hires rival gangster Salvatore Maroni's two sons to kill Two-Face, who is imprisoned in Arkham Asylum. A very much alive Alberto, who is also revealed to be Holiday, is momentarily being held there as well.

Sofia is visited by Catwoman, who informs her that Carmine's corpse has been stolen and offers to retrieve it for one million dollars. After later being sent a package containing her father's ring finger, Sofia dons the alias The Hangman and starts murdering police officers and city officials who had ties to Dent. She murders in such a way that the killings are blamed on Dent himself. She kills them by hanging them and then using case files to spell out cryptic messages in the form of the children's game, Hangman.

After the Joker figures out that Sofia is not really paralyzed, he attacks her at her grandfather's estate. Sofia is saved by Alberto, who has been sentenced to house arrest at the estate, and Batman appears soon after and defeats the Joker.

Soon after, a task force is assembled to stop the Hangman. However, Sofia obtains inside information and murders the entire task force. Sofia later repays her debt to Alberto when she saves him from Calendar Man. She brings her wounded brother to the family crypt but, disgusted by his weakness, murders him herself.

Sofia then sets out to kill her last victim - Two-Face - and almost kills him with a noose. When Batman arrives and forces Sofia to fight him, Two-Face takes advantage of the distraction and shoots her in the head, killing her.

Reevesverse

Sofia Falcone is a major antagonist in the 2024 crime miniseries The Penguin. After her father and brother's deaths, she became the new figure-head of the Falcone Crime Family and, after deducing his involvement in their deaths, the biggest active threat the titular protagonist has to face in his rise to power.

Batman: The Long Halloween - Part Two

Due to serial killer Holiday murdering members of the Falcone crime family, as well as in the Maroni one, it triggered a gang war; the instability is complicated by the rise of supervillains in Gotham.

During a court case, Sal Maroni accused District Attorney Harvey Dent of being Holiday, then threw acid in his face, which horrifically disfigured half of his body, Harvey is hospitalised, but is collected by two men working for Falcone, since he also believed Harvey was Holiday and wanted revenge for deaths of his loved ones, like his son Alberto. Harvey, however, managed to escape, though killed the two men in the process. With his mind fracturing, Harvey ended up in the sewer, meeting Solomon Grundy, and appearing able to communicate with him by repeating his namesake nursery rhyme.

Harvey, now calling himself Two-Face, and Grundy attack Arkham Asylum and free several inmates; Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, and Mad Hatter engage the GCPD while Two-Face, Grundy, Joker, and Penguin attack Falcone's building. They overwhelm Falcone's guards and his daughter Sofia.

Two-Face prepares to flip a coin to decide whether Falcone will live or die. Batman and Catwoman arrive, interrupting the decision, and defeat the rogues after an exhaustive battle, but cannot prevent Two-Face from shooting Falcone. Distraught, Sofia tries to kill Two-Face with his own gun, but fails. She then trips over Poison Ivy's vines and falls out the broken window, briefly caught by Catwoman, yet she is unable to hoist the larger woman with such a flimsy grip, thus Sofia falls down the tall building, smashing into a police car, then dying from the impact.

Catwoman reveals her face to Falcone, who mentions the name "Louisa", confirming that as the name of her mother, so Selina was indeed a daughter of Falcone and half-sister to the late Alberto and Sofia. Batman inadvertently reveals his identity while offering medical help, which Falcone declines before dying in Bruce's arms. Two-Face turns himself over to Gordon, claiming responsibility for the murders.

Though, Batman goes to confront the true killer, Harvey's wife, Gilda Dent. Gilda was once in a relationship with Alberto, and became pregnant, but Falcone refused to allow what he deemed as lesser blood in his family, thereby forced Gilda to have an abortion; however, an unfortunate side effect of the underground implementation was that it left Gilda permanently sterile. Thus, Gilda married Harvey to push him into taking down the Falcone crime family with the law, but seeing it ineffective through legal means, she committed to killing her way to vengeance. After Gilda had already burned the evidence, she asked Batman if he will expose her, which didn't answer due to contemplating the traumatic motivation, and desire to honor his friend, Harvey Dent's wish to protect her.
