Szeth belonged to an assassin named Liss, who then sold him to slavers in Kholinar. He was later bought by the Listeners. They ordered him to kill King Gavilar Kholin. He attacked the palace and battled many of Gavilar's bodyguards. He finally managed to kill Gavilar. Before Gavilar died, he requested that his borther be told to say the most important words a man can say. He also asked that a black sphere be protected, which Szeth took. Szeth became infamous as the Assassin in Whte. Gavilar's assassination led to a war between Alethkar and the Listeners.

Szeth ended up becoming the slave of a man named Avado. The Oathstone traded hands many times over the next five years. Eventually it fell into the hands of a criminal named Makkek, who used Szeth to assassinate rivals. Szeth was sent to assassinate someone, when a mysterious stranger, who knew of Szeth's powers, obtained the Oathstone. He ordered Szeth to kill many nobles, dressed as the Assassin in White. He killed many people and ended up starting a war in Jah Keved. Szeth was ordered to kill Taravangian. However, Taravangian held the Oathstone and revealed he had been controlling Szeth. He then ordered Szeth to kill Dalinar Kholin.

Szeth attacked Elhokar's palace in the Shattered Plains and battled against Kaladin, Adolin, and Dalinar. Szeth battled against Kaladin. When he saw Kaladin had Surgebinding, Szeth fled. During the Everstorm, Szeth once again tried to kill Dalinar and battled against Kaladin. Szeth was forced to accept that Kaladin was truly a Knight Radiant and that he was not in fact Truthless. Kaladin managed to defeat Szeth who died temporarily.

Nale managed to resurrect Szeth. Nale gave him the sword Nightblood, a sword created with Investiture from the planet Nalthis. Szeth trained with the order of Skybreakers. Szeth met and battled against Lift, but Nightblood declared her innocent. The Skybreakers were informed that convicts had escpaed from prison and were ordered to kill the guilty. Szeth discovered the inmates were poorly treated and he killed the prison warden. He was able to advance in the Order. Nale then informed the Skybreakers they would join the Singers to destroy humanity. Szeth left the order and vowed to protect Dalinar.

Szeth went to the battle of Thaylen and found Lift trying to steal a gemstone on Dalinar's orders. He helped her get the gemstone to trap one of the Unmade. Szeth was arrested by Dalinar but ended up becoming his bodyguard. Szeth joined Davinaer to battle against Nale. After Taravangian was arrested he asked to speak to Szeth. He requested to use Nightblood to kill Rayse, the host of Odium, but Szeth refused. He later battled against a Herald named Ishar.

Szeth decided to kill Taravangian. As he did so, Odium pulled Taravangian into a vision, allowing him to grab Nightblood and kill Rayse, thereby becoming the host of Odium. Szeth though the corpse of Rayse was that of Taravangian. He then left for Shinovar to kill the leaders who made him Truthless.
