Biography
The Caliph was the chief executive of the Thaarn on the artificial world of Crandor. He was rumoured to be the only person to have ever seen the Thaarn and co-operated with him in his plan to rule the universe by controlling gravity. After the Liberator was captured by Crandor's gravitational field, the Caliph met Avon, Tarrant, Cally and Vila outside the ship and told them the ship was now the property of the Thaarn and would be stripped for raw materials. When Tarrant objected, the Caliph used his neuron whip, which resembled a cane, to cause him pain. He then entered the ship and met Dayne. Threatening her with pain if the neuron whip sensed a lie, he asked her about Cally, who the Thaarn had sensed was on board. Dayna told her Cally was with the others, but when he asked about Orac, who the Thaarn was unaware was a computer, told him there had never been a person of that name on board.
The Caliph sent Cally to the Thaarn and assigned Avon and Tarrant to work with Groff, the chief technician, on calculations for the Thaarn's plan. After a team sent to strip the Liberator was killed by a security system, the Caliph became frustrated at the lack of answers and attempted to question Tarrant, but Tarrant's truthful but misleading answers made Orac sound like a bald dwarf. The Caliph later returned and found Groff attempting to turn off the artificial gravity field that held Crandor together. The Caliph fought with him and hit him with a fatal charge from the neuron whip, but Groff managed to throw the lever as he died. The Caliph was killed when Crandor exploded.
