Atlanta, Georgia (TV Universe)

This article is about the Comic universe location. You may be looking for its Comic universe counterpart.

Atlanta, Georgia is the capital city of the state of Georgia. The Metro-Atlanta area's population was over 5.5 million people before the outbreak occurred. It was a major location in Season 1 and Season 5 of the TV series, as well as The Walking Dead Webisodes: Cold Storage and the Tales of the Walking Dead episode "Blair / Gina".

Pre-Apocalypse

Atlanta was home to over 5.5 million people. Not much else is known about it, but it obviously provided many services for the civilians.

Post-Apocalypse

As the undead rose, the government and military advised people to seek the larger cities for protection, yet were unable to handle the dire situation. The military failed to hold the infected back, resulting in the majority of its population reanimating as undead. Military checkpoints were overrun and vehicles were burned or abandoned. People attempted to flee the city using the freeways and highways, however, they became gridlocked, leaving the vehicle occupants vulnerable to the 'walkers'. The Center for Disease Control building is also based in Atlanta and was attempting to discover a cure for the outbreak. When the city became overrun and the military personnel within became infected, airstrikes were called in, releasing napalm onto the city streets and sending in Marines to "liquidate" anyone who survived the bombing. Nevertheless, they were ineffective at clearing out the city of the undead and most of the city remains intact, as just the streets of infected were _targeted (which explains why when Rick Grimes entered the city, he saw several burned vehicles). With the city overrun with undead, it left the outskirts of Atlanta relatively safe until the walkers began to slowly make their way out to the more rural areas, in search of food.

Tales of the Walking Dead: Season 1

"Blair / Gina"

Blair Crawford and Gina work at the Circle of Trust Insurance Company in Atlanta as the outbreak begins. While trying to escape from the city, both women get caught up in a time loop where they repeatedly keep dying while trying to steal an oil tanker. DHS agent Leo Rogers reveals to Blair that the military is shutting down the city and only keeping two back roads open for those trying to leave, Route 122 and the Amurchee Byway.

After Blair and Gina work together to steal the tanker, they head into Atlanta to find Gina's family in the Washington Park neighborhood and escape with them. Stopping on an overpass, the two women spot a mass of civilians trying to flee from a herd down a jammed highway. Blair and Gina dump the fuel from their tanker on the road below them and set it on fire, destroying the herd and saving the civilians. The tanker explodes as well, but both women survive the explosion and continue into Atlanta to find Gina's family.

Trivia

  • There are a few members of The Walking Dead TV series and Fear the Walking Dead cast and crew that were actually born in Atlanta, Georgia:
  • Locations for Rick's house, Morgan Jones' house, and the park where Hannah is first spotted and later killed are all within a quarter mile of each other in Atlanta's historic Grant Park neighborhood. In fact, Rick's house is directly across the street from the Zoo Atlanta. One of its buildings can be seen as Rick leaves his house.
  • Many of the scenes in Atlanta were shot in the Five Points district. Locations such as Woodruff Park, Georgia State University, and the buildings surrounding them such as 25 Park Place, the Equitable Building, and the Candler Building can be seen during Rick's escapades.
