A Light in the Mist

- Ashfur assigns Houndleap to lead a patrol to find Rootspring, Bristlefrost, Shadowsight, and the others who had escaped. Mapleshade is irritated that Houndleap is leading the patrol, but Ashfur reminds her of Stemleaf's escape, prompting Houndleap to smugly promise Ashfur that Rootspring will not escape him. He, Mapleshade, and Rushtooth then depart. After being captured by Houndleap's patrol, Rootspring sees Houndleap and Mapleshade standing guard outside of his prison. When Rushtooth returns, he says that Ashfur is pleased with them for catching Rootspring, to which Houndleap replies that Ashfur had told them to do so. He eagerly greets Ashfur when he arrives, earning a sneer from Mapleshade for sucking up, and Houndleap snaps back at her. Ashfur silences them both before speaking with Rootspring, and Houndleap tries to eavesdrop alongside Rushtooth. Rootspring wonders if they would fight Ashfur if they knew that he intends to destroy them.
- Rootspring repeats the words of the voice in his head to Ashfur, causing him to leave the prison and order Houndleap to watch Rootspring while he checks the barrier. Against Ashfur's order, Houndleap follows him. Later, during the battle against Ashfur, Houndleap stands with Rushtooth, Thistleclaw, and the rogue spirits. In his rush to save Shadowsight, Rootspring ducks under Houndleap and attacks a ginger she-cat. Houndleap joins the fight, pulling Rootspring to the ground, though Rootspring manages to fend him off. Houndleap continues to participate in the battle, fighting Crowfeather, attempting to attack Bristlefrost before being intercepted by Rootspring, and battling Silverhawk. After Bristlefrost pushes Ashfur into the dark water, Smokehaze looks to Houndleap and recognizes him as her enemy.

Houndleap to Spottedpaw
- When Spottedpaw and Thistleclaw visit the Dark Forest, Mapleshade orders Thistleclaw and Houndleap to fight. The two toms attack each other with claws unsheathed, engaging in dangerous moves. Thistleclaw slams Houndleap up against a tree and Spottedpaw begs them to stop. Mapleshade praises them, crowing at Houndleap about how he had not fought like that in WindClan, causing Spottedpaw to question whether she is in StarClan. After Thistleclaw pins Houndleap down, Mapleshade tells them to stop and then orders Thistleclaw and Rushtooth to battle.
- Houndleap is bleeding heavily and Spottedpaw rushes to grab some bracken to stop the bleeding. She exclaims to Houndleap about StarClan not having plants, to which Houndleap responds that they are in the Dark Forest. Horrified, Spottedpaw asks Houndleap why Thistleclaw is there, but Thistleclaw comes up from behind to say that he is there to become a better warrior. While Spottedpaw trains with Whitepaw, Thistleclaw encourages her to go for the eyes, and she remembers his brutal training session with Houndleap.
