This book shows what a personal mess LBJ was, and it is written by someone who worked for him and knew him well.

I gave this book 3 stars because I found myself looking forward to finishing it in order to move on to something else, the author seemed naïve in some respects concerning a man he knew for years, and he seemed subjective in his assessments of character, The author describes this book as a way to get things off his chest. He was a loyal supporter of Johnson, who may have realized that Johnson would not have had that same loyalty to him or others who were dedicated to "the cause". (of the great society). I would recommend this book as a way to round out a general knowledge of Johnson...an overview. My favorite part of the book was the description of Johnson campaigning in the South by train.
