Biography
Hugh Bond was a lay vicar of Exeter Cathedral, and organist of the parish church of St. Mary Arches, Exeter. His first musical work, Twelve Hymns and Four Anthems, was published around 1776: the book is undated, but the list of subscribers includes 'John Dennis, Esq. Mayor of Exeter, 1775'.
On 7 August 1782 he married Mary Rodd at Heavitree parish church.
In around 1792, he published a set of Twelve Anthems for One, Two, Three, and Four Voices, the Music selected from the sacred Oratorios of Mr Handel, & adapted to words … selected from various parts of the (reading) Psalms, & a few other places of the Holy Scripture. The title page of the book described him as 'author of a set of Hymns & Anthems' and 'Lay Vicar of Exeter Cathedral'.
At a similar date, a collection of The Psalms of David in Metre … the music consisting of the tunes in present use was published by Preston & Son, 'at their Warehouses 97 Strand.' The title page notes that the music was 'selected & adapted by Hugh Bond, Lay Vicar of Exeter Cathedral, & Author of several Sets of Hymns, Anthems &c.'
The preface to The Psalms of David in Metre notes that:
'This Day is published, by the EDITOR of this Work, Twelve Anthems for One, Two, Three and Four Voices, the Music selected from those justly admire Compositions, the sacred Oratorios of Mr. Handel, and adapted to Words properly calculated for the Service of the Church, or Private Devotion, selected from various Parts of the (Reading) Psalms, and a few other Places of the Holy Scripture, and are particularly calculated for Cathedrals and Churches that have Organs or Instruments.'
Hugh Bond died in 1792. His music remained in use into the nineteenth century: in particular, several of his works (both original psalm tunes and anthems, and anthems adapted from Handel) are included or referred to in the works of Richard Garbett, a later organist at St. Mary Arches.
