Biography
Born Михаи́л Миха́йлович Ива́нов near Gachina Palace, Ivanov was a choirboy at St. Isaak's Cathedral and atudied with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 1881 added his mother's name Ипполитов and a hyphen to avoid confusion with the other Mikhail Mikhailovich (1849 – 1927), a composer and critic. His first post was in Tiflis (1882) and in 1893 he became first professor and then director (1905) at the Moscow Conservatory.
