Perchè fuggi tra salci
ritrosetta ma bella
o cruda delle crude pastorella?
Perchè un bacio ti tolsi?
Miser, più che felice,
corsi per sugger vita e morte colsi.
Quel bacio che m'ha morto
tra le rose d'amor pungente spina
fu più vendetta tua che mia rapina.

English translation

Why do you flee among the willows
reluctant but beautiful one,
oh cruelest of the cruel, shepherdess?
Because I took a kiss from you?
Misfortune more than happiness
appeared in guise of life, but I seized death.
That kiss that has killed me
among the roses a sharp thorn
was more your revenge than my little theft.
