I was introduced to Paige Toon’s work last year when I read “Only Love Can Hurt Like This”-a 5 star read for me.

And, now that I have finished “Seven Summers” it is clear to me that she definitely knows how to pen love stories that tug on your heart strings!! 💔

Her books are definitely NOT Rom-Coms.

Liv and Finn met six summers ago when he was filling in for the lead singer of a band that was headlining at Seaglass-the restaurant/ bar of her beach town on the rugged Cornish coastline.

A devastating tragedy will bond them for life.

But Finn’s life is in LA with his own band, and Liv’s is in Cornwall where she has family commitments-her dreams of studying Sculpture in London, long gone.

Liv decides it would be TOO DIFFICULT to stay in touch-but if both are single when he returns to visit, they will pick up where they left off. And, for awhile, they do.

The story revisits each Summer from the time that they met, and then follows with SUMMER NOW.

I was immediately engrossed in their lives and rooting for them to make it work!

Just a couple of things niggled at me and prevented me from awarding the book 5 stars.

The first was that they both seemed mature beyond their years, though I could give them the benefit of the doubt because each has suffered things that would force you to grow up fast.

The second was that once we had a resolution in the seventh summer, the end of the book and the subsequent “epilogue summers” felt rushed in comparison.

And, finally, I didn’t cry-which is a requirement for a 5 star rating for me in this genre. Heartbreaking things happen but I didn’t feel crushed by the end result, though other readers may feel differently.

Still, I am definitely a fan who now watches for this author’s work, and I can definitely give this book my stamp of approval!

This book is a heart-wrenching rollercoaster that shattered my expectations. I'm usually not one for love triangles, but from the moment I met the characters and learned about their struggles, I was hooked. Grab a box of tissues, because you're going to need them.

The core of the story revolves around Liv, Tom, and Finn. It's a tale of six summers that lead to falling in love and one summer that changes everything. Liv and Finn first cross paths while working at a bar on the rugged Cornish coastline. Their futures brim with promise, but a night of passion ends in a tragedy that binds them together inextricably. They make a promise - if they're both single, they'll spend the summer together every year. Finn's life is in LA with his band, while Liv's roots lie in Cornwall with her family. It's a promise that seems simple enough, but love is far from simple.

Liv, an artist carrying the weight of the world after a tragic accident disrupts her life plan, and Finn, the adorable yet guarded musician, forge a unique bond. Their romance is a slow burn, and the tension between them is electric. You can't help but root for them, even though there are countless reasons it might not work out.

Enter Tom, a mysterious newcomer in Liv's hometown. It's easy to dismiss him at first, but as the story unfolds, you find yourself drawn to him, much like Liv. The book skillfully shuttles between the present day and the events of the previous six summers, keeping you on edge as you wait for the other shoe to drop, trying to unravel the "how" of it all.

"Seven Summers" is a breathtaking emotional journey that takes your heart and breaks it into a million pieces, only to mend it back together, repeating the process multiple times. The portrayal of disabilities in the story is authentic and touching, and the writing is stunning. You'll feel like you're living each moment with the characters, experiencing their highs and lows. The raw, emotional depth of this story had me sobbing uncontrollably at times.

Liv's character development and her journey over the course of seven summers are nothing short of brilliant. This book isn't just about Liv and Finn's love story; it's about Liv's growth and how she copes with her grief. It's a journey of self-discovery, showing how we often hinder our own progress. The shifting timeline and the way the story unfolds are captivating.

Paige Toon has outdone herself with "Seven Summers." As a longtime fan of her work, I always look forward to her books, and this one is no exception. A big thank you to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP PUTMAM/ G. P. Putnam's Sons for providing me with a digital reviewer copy of this profoundly moving book in exchange for my honest thoughts.

ALL the feels were felt here for me.

The story here dealt with life, love and loss and the complexities and difficult choices made as a result of it. It’s centered primarily around Liv, Finn and Tom. Finn and Liv instantly connect when they meet and after a tragic event occurs, it prompts the decision to meet every summer to avoid attachments as long as they’re both single– until one summer changes it all.

This was simultaneously heartfelt and painful. Liv's circumstances and the choices she had to make felt so real to me. I found myself relating to her when it came to her comfort zone holding her back and I liked seeing the realization of that being confronted as it shaped some of her choices and it made me reflect. her growth and healing throughout the years was sweet to see

To love is a beautiful experience in and of itself and to have the opportunity to have more than one love in this lifetime as well, but it’s also sometimes agonizing to think about. I mean, the idea that more than one person can mark a before and after in your life and holds such permanence? It’s wild. Not to mention, letting go isn’t easy yet neither is holding on but both are essential as terrifying as that might feel and look like by the end of that journey, and this story exemplifies that.

Liv had two loves that she met during two pivotal points in her life and it was easy to root for both and appreciate the care and support they showed her. One was a familiar and inextricable presence, while the other represented a newness in her life that was not connected to who she was, but rather who she was becoming. I personally felt a range of emotions with this love triangle as it had me contemplative in the confines of love and it was achingly beautiful. the reality of it all was harsh but that’s life sometimes for you. I thought one of the authors' discussion questions by the end answered this well.

My heart ached and soared throughout this and I was emotional during certain moments (ch. 43, 44, 49 and 51). The countdown from this summer to the past added a layer of depth with the longing and angst that was there which allowed me to feel everything with Liv. but that epilogue?! gripped my heart, pained me, and healed me but did leave me a bit conflicted yet not mad at it? i was just happy for liv in all aspects by the end. This was ultimately heartwarming and heartrending in the best way and think it’s worth the read 🥹 honorable mention of Michael who I adored as he gave this some comedic relief and loved how liv looked after him as it reminded me of my own brother.

Some quotes

“I back away from the precipice—that way only heartbreak lies. Because this beautiful thing we have will once again be put on ice when he returns to the other side of the world.”

“Don't ask me to stay, Liv.” he sounds desolate. “Then don't ask me to leave,” I counter.

“I like the way he looks at me, how seen he makes me feel. I’ve lived with a hollowness inside my heart for so long, but I don't feel empty when I'm with him. My heart feels full”

“You harness the hurt. You need it to work”

“He was the italian cypress to my withering apple tree, and I will always love him for it.”

Five stars! Six stars! Seven amazing stars for Seven devastating and beautiful Summers!

Paige Toon is at her best when she throws in multiple love interests, grief and traumas, and secrets solved in little snippets, so when I read the blurb of Seven Summers, excitement settled in my chest.

I've been a Paige Toon fan for years but found her latest book, Only Love Can Hurt Like This, repetitive and average. To not really love an author's new novel whose books were always my comfort reads (even when they hurt like h*ll) felt like I lost a piece of myself. And now I'm so happy I hit that five-star button so easily! This story is fighting over the number one spot with The One We Fell in Love With and Someone I Used to Know, two of my most favorite Paige Toon romances.

Beautiful. Lyrical. Heartwarming. Devastating. All words to describe my feelings for Seven Summers. From the first sentence, I swallowed up the words at a feverish pace and let the story flood me. D*mn, how I love these kinds of books. Multiple timelines, not knowing where the story will end, love alternated with darkness, likable, flawed characters, sooo many feelings, and, of course, Cornwall. I've never been to Cornwall, but Paige made me crave (again!) to visit that part of England somewhere in the future.

When I read about a quarter of the book, I fell in love with Finn, and I couldn't imagine feeling the same way about Tom. Ever. And then I fell head over heels for him, too, and I started rooting for Liv and Tom. But then I wanted Liv to be with Finn again, and then with Tom and … So if I wasn't able to choose between those two men, how could Liv?

Seven Summers was a punch to my gut. It wrecked me in every possible way, and when I finally felt hope, it got knocked out of me again. Tears clouded my eyes during those last few chapters, and I had to put my e-reader away several times. When I finally had the courage to pick it up, those effing tears immediately started running again. For those who fear that there won’t be a HEA, don’t panic! There will be one, I promise.

Paige Toon is back, everyone! This story is definitely not average or repetitive. It's one of the best books I read this year, and I'm proudly presenting it on my most memorable 2023 shelf!

I received an ARC from Penguin Group Putnam and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

“If you were a book I’d highlight half your lines.”

What to Expect:
➼ Small Beach Town
➼ UK Setting
➼ Alternating Timelines
➼ Second Chance
➼ Slow Burn
➼ Mutual Pining
➼ Summer Love
➼ Emotional Read
➼ Processing Grief & Devastating Loss
➼ Multiple Love Interests
➼ Down Syndrome Rep
➼ Her POV

This was well written, the pacing was good, the little town was cute… I was enjoying myself. I was even managing to look past these characters unnecessarily prolonging their heartache for SEVEN YEARS and THEN… there was Tom. Why did the author feel the need to include Tom? These characters had already been through too much and I took that personally.

What saved this book was that the reasons for their separation actually made a lot of sense. I still can’t help but think that if they had both sacrificed just a little bit, this wouldn’t have been such a hard fix. This author really loves to pile on the trauma. Plots like this where people don’t prioritize true love tend to really bother me. Real love is such a rare and beautiful thing and it shouldn’t be squandered like this.

✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼

Pre-read: Giving this author a second chance! 🤞🏻

I think the UK setting will work better for me.

Seven Summers is an emotional rollercoaster ride that gives you all the feels! Let me start off by saying, if you are looking for an easy, funny, rom-com, this is not it. This has a lot of depth and harder situations woven into it. The storyline followed Finn and Liv back and forth through the current summer and past summers unraveling their complicated relationship. They are both very likable characters, and I was cheering for them to get a happy ever after from the beginning to the end. I loved the epilogue so much; it was a bit shorter than I would have liked but it left me with a smile on my face! This is the first book I've read by Paige Toon, and I will be keeping her on my radar from here on out.

Thank you, Net Galley, and Penguin Group Putnam for a copy in return for my honest review.

WOWZA!

Seven Summers is not your typical romance book. Not by a long shot. It is original, endearing, refreshing, emotion evoking, thought provoking, and captivating. It's all about the journey for me with romance books and WOW what a journey!

Liv and Finn had bright futures when they met at a bar on the Cornish coastline. Liv is a local who dreams of being an artist and Finn is a musician from Los Angeles. They share a wonderful night together but then tragedy strikes. Finn must return to L.A. while Liv must stay in Cornwall. They make a promise to spend their summers together if both are single...

Tom is a new arrival in Cornwall and he and Liv have a connection....

I had no idea what I was getting into when I began this book. I loved the author's book Only Love Can Hurt Like This and was excited to start this book. I was instantly transported to the Cornish Coast, charmed by the characters, and feeling for what life throws their way. I kept my fingers crossed for them to both be single so they could spend their summers together. I also loved Tom's character and rooted for him and Liv as well.

This book had me thinking about it when I had to put it down. My heart soared, my heart broke, I cheered, I felt sad, I smiled, and I enjoyed the ride Page Toon took me on. Plus, I adored Liv's brother.

Wonderfully written, endearing, captivating and evoking emotion.

Seven Summers is a love story but not a rom-com.

Liv is an artist who was abroad in Italy studying her craft. After finishing her classes, she returns to Cornwall and her family home. Her plan is to move to London to continue pursuing her dream of sculpting. In the meantime, she takes a job at Seaglass, the local restaurant. Here is where she meets Flinn, a musician playing with the local band.

Liv and Finn fall for each other quite quickly but how will things work for them? She lives in the UK and Finn lives in the States and only comes to Cornwall for the summers.

After tragedy strikes, they decide not to keep in contact but to see each other in Cornwall every summer unless one of them falls in love with someone else.

On the seventh summer, we meet Tom, a newcomer who will stir things around. Liv and Tom have an undeniable connection and one that could be worth exploring.

Seven Summers takes you through two timelines: the Present Summer and through the last six. The story deals with friendship, grief, heartbreak, personal growth, disabilities, and love.

Paige Toon really knows how to write. Her characters were all believable and relatable and despite loving Finn, I fell in love with Tom too.

This was my first book from this author but it won't be the last.

Cliffhanger: No

4-4.5 stars, read this in one day by the pool and really enjoyed it! it was giving NOVEMBER 9 x LOVE AND OTHER WORDS vibes but to me, not as good as either of those. but i still liked it and reco it to others 🩷

read if you like: emo romances, right person / wrong time, second chance romances, love triangles, beach settings, romances with strong side plots

this book had alot of good things going on! but it’s definitely not a light romcom and is much deeper than you might think. deals a lot with grief and loss and how a love can help you through that. emo romances are my fave so i deff enjoyed that!

i liked the romance here but also loved the side plots. those are almost just as important to me in a romance and this one did a good job of having more going on than the romance which I applaud the other for.

the ending had me soooo nervous but thankfully kept on goinnnn and ended in a way that left me happy :)

this book is also giving “only love can hurt like thissssss” and i would looove to see it brought to life. the angst!! the love triangle!! let’s go!!! 🎬🎬🎬

overall—v much worth the read!! but wasn’t a 5 star for me. hard to live up to some of the books mentioned!

This was such a beautiful story and an incredible read! I flew through it. If you’re looking for something to pick up this summer, look no further than Seven Summers. Set on the Cornwall coastline, this will pull at your heart as you jump in time between the present and past with Liv. She’s a soft soul who loves deeply and suffers such loss and heartbreak. This was my first Paige Toon book; I loved her writing and can't wait to enjoy more, even if it did make me cry! I highly recommend this if you love an emotional romance.

Where do I start?
I thought this was going to be a sweet beach read but boy was I wrong. This book is literally just pain and suffering.

Starting with the positives, I enjoyed the authors writing and style and the setting had a lot of potential. My gripe with this book was that SO MUCH happened in the epilogue that should have definitely been a few additional chapters at the end of the book bc without the epilogue this book is so confusing?? Idk just not what I expected at all to be honest.

And also poor Tom???
JUSTICE FOR TOM BC SHE MADE HIM SUFFER AND HE DIDNT EVEN NEED TO EXIST.

this book sneaks up on you. you spend your time reading about two beautiful humans (who are right for each other but can never seem to get the timing right).

this book has friendship, family, grief, heart, tears + lots of other beautiful things. like a cute beach town and music and concerts and laughs and all good things that have to do with the summer time.

it’s truly the perfect summer read (especially if you like romance books with depth). please give this one a chance you won’t regret it 💝

Seven Summers took my emotions on one heck of a wild ride and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Liv and Finn have known each other since secondary school, but they reconnect while working at a restaurant/bar on the Cornish coastline six summers ago. A tragic event occurs, intertwining their lives and bringing them closer together. But as summer comes to an end, Finn has to return to his life in LA with his band while Liv remains in Cornwall tending to her family commitments and working on her sculptures when she has the time. They make a promise, Finn will return every summer, and if they are single they will pick back up where they left off. Six summers later, Liv finds herself falling for Tom, a mysterious stranger new to town.

The book is told in multiple timelines, current day alternating with the previous six summers. I do not care for love triangles and I normally have a clear favorite, BUT that wasn’t the case with this situation. Be warned, this is not a rom-com. It is both hopeful and heartbreaking. Liv, Finn, and Tom each had their issues but I loved them all. And what I love most about Paige Toon’s books is that she doesn’t rely on the miscommunication trope, but rather life circumstances tend to be the issue which I find quite realistic. She also is able to capture that feeling of young love and show how it grows and matures over the years.

I had a few minor issues, but one of them I cannot detail because I think it would definitely be a spoiler. The other was the epilogue which wasn’t really an epilogue but rather a continuation of the story. For as long as the epilogue was, it breezed over significant events that could have used more detail and which would have been better suited being explored a little more in additional chapters instead being rushed in the epilogue. 4.5 stars rounded up because Paige Toon had me in tears more than once in this book. 💫

I am currently working my way through her previous books and will continue to read anything she writes in the future. I’ll just be sure to have a box of tissues close by. 😪

My thanks to G.P. Putnam's Sons and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Random Things Tours.

Seven Summers was such a heartfelt, heartwarming, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking read that took me on an emotional rollercoater journey from start to finish.
This was so tenderly written and draws you in from page one. Liv felt like an old friend, and I felt I was right there with her on her journey throughout this story.
Liv and Tom meet six summers ago when Liv returns home from studying abroad, and she is instantly drawn to him from the second she lays eyes on him and hears him sing in his band. The pair get closer over the course of the summer break, and just before the end of the summer, tragedy strikes and leaves Livs life blown apart.
I sobbed at this part of the story and had to pull myself together to continue. Tom returns to the US to pursue his dream of being a musician/song writer and they make a pact that each summer he returns to visit his family they will get together but only if they're both single. As such, the book goes back and forth between the present and the previous six summers, and I was rooting for them from the moment they met. They just fit together so beautifully. Liv couldn't go with him to the US because of being needed at home and wouldn't stand in the way of Fins dreams. When Liv meets Tom and she finds love and happiness that's both steady and pure again, I was so happy for her and felt such mixed feeling when Finn returned. I'm being cautious what I say as I don't want to spoil this book for anyone. The love between Liv and Fin and Liv and Tom is beautiful, raw, and tender, and this book broke my heart and pieced it back together again. This would make an amazing film, and in all honesty, I think it will be made into one. It's just so beautiful and unique. Definitely have tissues at the ready!

Seven Summers by Paige Toon is a contemporary romance novel that will definitely pull at the heartstrings over and over again. The story in Seven Summers is just as the title suggests one that takes place over years of time going back to the summers the characters spent with one another.

Just after school Liv had her life planned out that she would spend that summer earning money so she could then leave Cornwall and follow her life’s dream of becoming a sculptor. Liv met Finn that summer and the two were immediately drawn to one another but destined to take different paths with Finn heading to L.A. to become a musician.

Tragedy hits Liv before she can follow her dreams and from that moment she knows her life needs to be in Cornwall with her family. Finn is still set to leave so the two make a pact that each year Finn will visit and if they are both still single they will spend their summer together but if either moves on in between then it will be over between them.

Seven Summers is the first book I’ve read by author Paige Toon and I will admit I almost passed this one by and that would have been a terrible choice. Thankfully something stood out about this one and I went ahead and picked it up and boy what a emotional rollercoaster ride it was until the very end. I enjoyed not only the main characters but those around them and as the years went by I couldn’t read fast enough to know how it would all come around in the end. Definitely one I’d recommend checking out and another author to come back to someday for me.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

I am a huge Paige Toon fan and read all her work that I can get my hands on. After reading so many of her books I begin to wonder if she will run out of material but nope! This one was brand-spanking new and fresh material. She always has a very clever way of getting you connected with the characters early on and moreover, keeping you interested by them throughout the book.

As per usual, I loved the range of characters in this story and found myself sympathising with Liv, the main character, as the book went on. In this romance, Liv initially mets Finn “I don’t know what this thing with Finn is, or where it can go but I’ve never felt so lit up”. And shortly after meeting him, Liv was in for the shock of her life…a massive car pile up 😮 will anyone survive this nasty surprise? As for Liv she felt numb. She knew that sculpting would soothe her soul in the long run but she didn’t want to rush it. Liv has lived with a lot of heart break but with him she finally felt her heart was full.

I absolutely adored the structure of this book. It went back and forth between ‘This summer’ and the previous 6 summers, 1 at a time. It was so simple yet created a very intriguing twist to the story. Plus we were treated to an extended version of an epilogue.

As the book went on Paige does her usual and, she tore my heart apart but very carefully and slowly knitted it back together ❤️‍🩹

What I loved about this book was that as it was coming to a close and you *knew* how it was all going to end very nicely…a bomb was dropped and everything turned on it’s head in the matter of a few words. The book ended how I had always wanted, I just didn’t imagine it would ever happen given the circumstances the plot led us to believe.

This is definitely one of her best works imo.

Apologies for the late and short review but I’m unwell and have very little energy 🤒

I have a feeling this is going to be one of the top beach reads of the summer! Seven Summers takes us on the journey of Liv and Finn, who meet while working at a bar in Cornwall in their early twenties. They are instantly drawn to each other- but it's a classic case of right person, wrong time, as Finn lives in L.A and they each have big plans to start their careers. Things get even further complicated when a tragedy occurs at the end of the summer, strengthening the bond between them even more. As Finn returns to L.A, they make a pact that if they are single the next summer to pick things back up where they left off. And this begins their epic and tumultuous love affair, spanning over the next six summers. But when Liv falls for Tom, a charming tourist who is willing to drop everything to build a life with her in Cornwall, she has to make a choice.

First of all- this is a VERY addicting read. It's been a while since I've had a book that I was reaching for literally every spare second I had. The pacing of the story was perfect, and I loved bouncing back and forth between the past summers and the present. I feel like sometimes alternating timelines can get a little convoluted, but this was executed perfectly. I also looooooved the setting. I felt completely transported to the charming, summery Cornish seaside, which was particularly nice considering I was reading this during the dreary Michigan winter. The characters were all so likable and well developed- you could really feel their struggles. Liv, the protagonist, is one of the most likable and easiest to root for characters I have read in a long time. I found both the love stories to be totally swoony with tons of chemistry- I kept changing my mind on who I wanted her to end up with.

One thing to note- this is most certainly NOT a light, happy, beach read. This is a rip-your-heart-out kind of romance, so plan accordingly ;).

Really, my only gripe with this book was that I would have preferred the ending to have been a bit more fleshed out, rather than crammed into a pretty quick epilogue. After the journey this book took me on, it felt like I needed a bit more closure.

All that to say, I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend. I am looking forward to reading more from Paige Toon!

Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the advanced copy!

5⭐️

No one warned me that this book would absolutely rip my heart to shreds. The story was beautiful, heartbreaking and at many times unpredictable. Not at all your typical Summer Romance as the story bounces between two relationships, one past and one present, and your heart will have no idea who you should be rooting for.

📚Thank you NetGalley and Paige Toon for the ARC of Seven Summers.

Seven Summers is a highly emotional romance about impossible choices, love, and growth.

Told from the past and present, Seven Summers follows Liv and Finn as they fall for each other, but are separated at the end of each summer with a promise to spend next summer together if they’re both still single.

I enjoyed the alternating timelines with the present informing readers to guard their hearts as Liv and Finn are estranged. As much as I enjoyed the alternating timelines, I wish Toon would have spent more time in the past chapters. Liv and Finn are supposed to have an all-consuming romance that allows them to wait for each other. While I did feel their chemistry and tension, there wasn’t enough of it. Admittedly, their story is gut wrenching however it could have been devastating.

The ending was rushed. The epilogue read like Toon wanted to finish writing as quickly as possible and get Liv to a specific ending.

Spoilers:

Spice level: fade to black

Overall, Seven Summers had the potential to be an all-consuming and devastating romance, but missed the mark by not spending enough time developing the relationship.

*** I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book ripped me apart. Literally within 120 pages I was crying and the end??? I can’t. This book captures love, grief, and healing so well. I love when a romance story has so many more layers and depth to it.

Finn and Olivia meet one summer and promise to only be with each other during every summer if they’re still single. One summer, Finn doesn’t come back, and Olivia meets someone else.

This book gives you dual timeline with Finn and Olivia’s story up until the present, and Olivia and Tom’s story during the current summer. I absolutely loved how this story was told and written because it made it that much more emotional. My heart hurt so badly for all 3 of these characters. Finn and Olivia’s relationship felt so real and raw and really captured falling in love in your 20s. Olivia and Tom were so sweet and hopeful.

I loved the summery beachy setting, the friendships, the dual timeline, Olivia as an fmc, and the writing. It was super fast paced, engaging, emotional, and angsty. I literally could not put this book down. The plot twist at the end broke my heart and the ending put it right back together. I feel like this is one I’ll want to reread every summer. Not a super lighthearted beach read but my perfect summer read nonetheless 😭🩵
