3.5/5 My 4th (fat!) book by Baldacci in the past month. 3 of them from the Amos Decker series and loved all 3. Compared to the slow-burn brooding Swedish ones, these Baldacci police-procedurals were real page-turners. Without dumbing down like Lee Child. But taking a break !

3.5/5 I have been intrigued by the high-rankings that Nordic countries get when various parameters affecting quality of life are measured. Intrigued because surely it cant be pleasant to live in darkness for a few months every year. It cant be pleasant to pay all those taxes (72% in Denmark according to the author) while the govt hands out substantial unemployment benefits to those who might not even be making an effort. Ok, maybe the education, 3.5/5 I have been intrigued by the high-rankings that Nordic countries get when various parameters affecting quality of life are measured. Intrigued because surely it cant be pleasant to live in darkness for a few months every year. It cant be pleasant to pay all those taxes (72% in Denmark according to the author) while the govt hands out substantial unemployment benefits to those who might not even be making an effort. Ok, maybe the education, healthcare and public-transport systems etc may be really good but why are Scandinavians/Nordic people considered a happy lot ? Beginning with Denmark where the author has lived a lot, he elaborates on what sets the Nordic countries apart from the rest of the world and also how they differ from each other. There is a good all-round coverage of history, culture, economics and politics. It is not a travelogue as such (perhaps VS Naipaul may claim it is), but a commentary. Having said that, there are a few problems too with the book. Firstly, the author was repetitive at times. Secondly, the book seemed to be all over the place at times with the author contradicting everything that he had just said in the previous chapter. Maybe this was because he has a strong Leftist bent of mind and his ideology prevailed over facts - certainly so in the discussion on immigration and in particular Muslim immigration. My 2 cents - a country should be able to choose immigrants background based on their record of integrating well, their industriousness and their low crime-rates. Inclusivity and multi-culturalism are for the society and not to dismantle it. Enough said, pick it up if the topic interests you. It is certainly readable. PS:- I am a hug fan of Scandinavian crime-fiction and I wish he had a chapter on atleast the Swedish and the irony of it. PPS:- Dear author, the right-wing Swedish Democrats are now a part of the Govt in Sweden having done very well in the 2022 elections. Surely, something is very very wrong with the "Left-liberal" view of the world. Atleast entertain that possibility instead of thinking about dissolving the people :P...more
