After reading Nataliya's review that contained this little snippet, I removed it from the TBR. This deserves an award, all right. The most overwrought description of a torso ever in science-fiction:

“She gazed at Laurence’s face (which looked squarer and more handsome without a big shirt collar framing it), his surprisingly puffy and suckable-looking nipples, his shaved pubes, and the way the leg and stomach hair erupted in a heart-shaped ring around the depilated zone. And she felt like they, the two of them, right here, right now, could make something that defied tragedy.”

Let's talk tragedy--specifically, the tragedy of this winning a Locus over [b:City of Blades|23909755|City of Blades (The Divine Cities, #2)|Robert Jackson Bennett|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1426255519l/23909755._SY75_.jpg|43516764] and [b:The Obelisk Gate|26228034|The Obelisk Gate (The Broken Earth, #2)|N.K. I love short stories when I'm running low on reading time
and this set sounds great!

A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

I didn’t quite know what to make of this book. It is both science fiction and fantasy. It is a coming of age story and an apocalyptic end of the world story. It is a cheesy love story and a humorous memoir-type story. It is thought-provoking, romantic, horrifying, funny, touching, pessimistic and yet, ultimately, optimistic.

I think the contradictions, while making it interesting, also made it somewhat uneven and therefore, hard to read and digest.

Engagingly written, Charlie Jane Anders' The City In The Middle Of The Night contains some fantastic worldbuilding, including an ecosystem, two greatly varying urban governing structures and social modes, xenozoology, and language. Highly evocative in all of its multifaceted inventiveness and descriptive excellence, Anders writes most potently about the relationships betwen her various and varied characters. Most palpably, Sophie's longing and yearning love for Bianca, despite all of the latter's flaws, leapt off the page and into my heart and tear ducts. An deeply engaging and moving and inventive and well-written read.… (more)
