About the Author

Dr Michael Arnheim is a practising London barrister and mediator. He also teaches at London Metropolitan University. Starting life as a Classicist he graduated with a PhD from St John's College, Cambridge, in 1969 and was subsequently elected into a Fellowship of the College. In 1975 he returned to show more South Africa, his native land, where at the age of 31 he was appointed a full professor and head of department. He was called to the Bar in 1988 show less

This is a remarkable account of Roman history by a true contrarian. Arnhem shoots down the pius generalities of the "Late Antiquity" led by Peter Brown and shows that the period was characterized by internal and external fighting between oligarchies and "barbarians". Unfortunately, the text is full of digressions, such as potted histories of French and English monarchies, and repetitions; however, these lapses in need of an editor don't take away from the author's provocative thesis.
