About the Author
Dr Michael Arnheim is a practising London barrister and mediator. He also teaches at London Metropolitan University. Starting life as a Classicist he graduated with a PhD from St John's College, Cambridge, in 1969 and was subsequently elected into a Fellowship of the College. Why Rome Fell: Decline and Fall, or Drift and Change? by Michael Arnheim
This is a remarkable account of Roman history by a true contrarian. Arnhem shoots down the pius generalities of the "Late Antiquity" led by Peter Brown and shows that the period was characterized by internal and external fighting between oligarchies and "barbarians". Unfortunately, the text is full of digressions, such as potted histories of French and English monarchies, and repetitions; however, these lapses in need of an editor don't take away from the author's provocative thesis.
