"we can choose to live. Or we can choose to survive."

An incredible story - about love and loss and what it means to be family and how you fit within it. I loved the small amount of lore - the idea that a psychic gives them their Date of Death when they are all very young. And how that affects how they choose to live.

I absolutely loved every last one of the kids. Simon was unique and broke my heart. Klara nearly made me cry. Daniel was so stoic, angry but still the protector. Varya and her anxiety and her love and her need to control what she could. All of these kids dealt with the knowledge of their death and then the loss of each other so differently. Each voice was unique, each loss distinct and each story was so well told and so moving. I loved this one. I will definitely look for more from this author.… (more)

The author has a great grasp of craft. And I'm really impressed with how much research she did into the various fields and interests of her main characters. There are some books where the author has a great premise and then fails to deliver on that premise. But in this case, the author delivers incredibly well. I was quite impressed, and look forward to her future work.

This is a story about five siblings who found out the date of their death and how it affected their lives. I enjoyed this book. The writing style does not get in the way of the story, and the character development is wonderful.

3.5 Stars.
Would your life change if you had been given the date on which you would die?

Set in 1969 in New York City's Lower East Side, word spreads that there is a a traveling psychic who claims she can tell folks the date of their deaths. . The Gold children—four adolescents on the cusp of self-awareness—sneak out to hear their fortunes but how will it affect them as individuals and as a family.

Without doubt an interesting and intriguing premise and a book that caught me by surprise for many reasons.
Extremely well written and plotted and a book that was certainly fresh and quite a page turner.
A word of warning ......The first 60/70 pages of the story was very sexually graphic and while I was a little taken aback, the graphic content fits with the story being told and is not continued throughout the book.
The last part of the book contains cruelty to animals and some readers may be distressed by this so beware in advance.
Having said that none of the above affected my reading or rating of the novel.

This was a bookclub read and I can see great discussion on this particular choice. The story is well executed, fresh and the characters interesting and diverse. I really liked the family dynamics and this one reminded me of [b:Commonwealth|28214365|Commonwealth|Ann Patchett|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1483278132s/28214365.jpg|48242398] by[a:Ann Patchett|7136914|Ann Patchett|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1371838720p2/7136914.jpg].
An interesting and different book that I look forward to discussing for my sit in bookclub.
