A lonely whale is excited when a ship comes near his deserted island, not realizing they were coming to kill him. But before they can harm him, the ship hits a rock and sicks. One young man, Sam, realizes the whale wants to help the sailors get safely to the island. The other men are still suspicious of befriending a creature they believe is evil. Yet Sam and the whale become friends. When the whale becomes beached, Sam convinces the others to help him get the whale back in the water -- which they did. Eventually a ship appears on the horizon and the men are rescued, yet Sam is sad to leave his friend.

Works beautifully with William Steig's Amos and Boris
