I initially had high hopes for this book. True it doesn't add anything new to the genre but that's not always a bad thing. That being said I think if you are going to stick to the tried and true you have to do it well and that just wasn't the case with this one. It does have good elements to it but they're just not utilised to their full potential. I found the pacing to be awkward as well, there was no real rhythm here. Some portions of the book were really not fleshed out at all and then others were taken too far, really bogging them down and make the book almost unreadable at times. Eh, not bad, but not stellar either. The place and people names are unnecessarily confusing, and the writing is a bit stilted in spots. But I enjoyed the story, and wil read the second half when it comes out.
