From the description of the book, I thought I would like it more. It just did not live up to my expectations. I was hoping to hear more about the young girls and didn't really find myself invested in the characters.

A bit too long but, still a bit slow
A bit slow & totally predictable. Shows promise though!

Banville partially succeeds where Chandler failed--unpacking the vulnerability of his noble knight PI protagonist. Unfortunately, Banville does not really flesh out Marlowe's love interest, and why he became so smitten with her is somewhat of a mystery.

This noir story was completely absorbing like books I read as a kid. Tale of a hard-drinking Irish loner, a pathologist who becomes the sleuth to solve a murder and a mystery, all set in foggy 1950's Dublin. The writing, the setting, the suspense were beautifully crafted.
