Miles (brown skin, black hair) feels "fluttery" on his adoption day. He hugs his foster mother (light skin, gray hair) goodbye, and goes with his two new dads, Teddy and David (one blond and bearded, one brown-skinned with a neat goatee) to his new home. He meets his new sister Michelle (light skin, brown hair), who's super excited to meet him; she invites him to paint with her, and helps him learn to ice skate. Miles settles in, enjoying outings like going to a musical, and playing outside with Michelle. Then, on his birthday, his dads reveal a piano - Michelle's idea, since Miles had told her he liked to play. "He sat on the piano bench and played one, two, three notes, and finally a chord of four notes all together. The whole family started to sing." A wonderfully inclusive, positive adoption story. A family is a family is a family!… (more)

A nearly perfect story, too bad it's messed up by iffy science. A note about a whale's exhalation would be nice, and a drawing that showed mist instead of water. Otherwise, we all must remember to be more like the gull than the crabby crab.

Well that's just about as silly as a book can get in so few words and such simple pictures. I honestly don't know what to think, nor does my inner child (I'll have to read others' reviews).

I love that it's about Chloe's adjustment to fearing she'll lose her uncle, and the issues of diversity are secondary. (I couldn't find Chloe's dad in the time I had to read this, but it's clear he's darker than her mom.) I read the edition with human characters and it was attractive, but the one with the rodents looks like it would be cute, too.
